8th Semester B.Tech (EC)
End Semester (spring) Examination 2021
Subject Name: Antenna Analysis and Synthesis Subject Code: EC-6402
Maximum marks: 50 Time: 2 hours

Q Instructions: Answer all the questions. All parts of a question should be answered Marks
No. in one place. Figures in the right hand margin indicate marks.
1.(a) What do you mean by co-polarization and Cross-polarization in antenna 2
patterns?

A centre-fed electric dipole of length l is attached to a balanced lossless

(b) transmission line whose characteristic impedance is 50 ohms. Assuming the
dipole is resonant at the given length, find the input VSWR when 8
(a) l=λ/4
(b) l= λ/2
2.(a) Find the radiation efficiency of an 8-turn circular loop antenna operating at 5
30MHz. The radius of each turn is a= 15cm, the radius of the wire is b = 1mm
and the spacing between turns is 2c = 3.6mm. Assume the wire is copper (σ =
5.7×107 S/m), and the antenna is radiating into free space. Account for
proximity effect.[Rp/R0= 0.5]

(b) Design a five element Yagi-Uda antenna with centre frequency of 68MHz using
step by step empirical formula. 5

3.(a) Describe planar array with a neat sketch. Derive the expressions for array factor.
Design a broadside array that will produce approximately a pattern described

Choose spacing between element, d = 2 and progressive phase shift, 𝛼 = −𝜋.

4.(a) Why is a log periodic antenna known as frequency independent antenna? Derive 5
the design parameters of this antenna.

(b) Design a 5-turn helical antenna which is at 400MHz operates in normal mode.
The spacing between the turns is λ/50. It is desired that the antenna possesses 5
circular polarization. Determine the
i) Circumference of the helix (in λ & in metres)
ii) Length of a single turn (in λ & in metres)
iii) Pitch angle (in degree)
5.(a) Derive Friis Transmission equation with a neat sketch. 6

(b) Design an end-fire right-handed circularly polarized helix having a half-power

beam-width of 450, pitch angle of 130, and a circumference of 60cm at a 4
frequency 500MHz. Determine the (i) turns needed, (ii) directivity in dB, and
(iii) axial ratio.
