PPT Template CB - Turbine and Generator Selection

This document provides guidance on selecting turbines and generators for mini hydro grid development projects in Zambia. It outlines the key factors to consider when choosing a turbine, including turbine type, net head available, and flow rate. Formulas and tables are presented for determining the appropriate turbine based on head. Guidelines are also given for generator selection, including type of generator for different scheme sizes, ambient temperature corrections, and sample calculations. The overall aim is to equip trainees with the knowledge to select optimal turbines and generators tailored to their specific mini grid sites and power needs.

Turbine and Generator Selection

Prof. F.D. Yamba ; Satnam Singh Virdy ; Abel Chavula

27 – 31 March 2023
Turbine Selection
The water power available at the exit of the penstock is calculated using:

P = ρ-w x g x Q-net x h-net

Where:
ρw = Density of water
Qnet = Net flow rate of water
hnet = Net head available
g = Acceleration due to gravity

2
Turbine Selection
The selection of an appropriate turbine can be done with the help of criteria given in
the Table below
Type of Turbine Type of Head Maximum net
Head (m)
Pelton High head Above 300
Francis Medium head 30-400m even up
to 500-600m
Kaplan Low head 10-60
Deriaz Low head 50-150
Bulb / Propeller Very low head 3-20
In overlapping ranges, more detailed analysis is
required to select the most optimum turbine.

3
Turbine Selection
Alternatively, Figures 12(a) and 12(b) can also be used graphically to select turbines
by calculating the specifics speeds.

Design Calculation

Determine the generator rating for an MHP scheme designed for a power
output of 20kW. The site is located at 1,700m above sea level and the
ambient temperature inside the power house during summer afternoons
can go up to 35oC. An ELC will be used in the plant and the villagers would
also like to use tube lights.

9
Closing Remarks
This Section presented Charts and Tables that can be used for selecting Turbines and
Generators
