1. This document discusses demultiplexers, which take a single input signal and distribute it to one of several output signals based on select lines. 2. It describes three common types of demultiplexers: 1) 1-to-2 demultiplexer which has one select line, 2) 1-to-4 demultiplexer which has two select lines, and 3) 1-to-8 demultiplexer which has three select lines. 3. Circuits, truth tables, and applications are presented for each demultiplexer type to illustrate how the input is routed to a single output based on the state of the select lines.

Introduction:
Demultiplexing is the process of taking information from one input and transferring it
to one of several outputs. Demultiplexer is a combinational circuit. A demultiplexer
takes a single input signal and creates multiple output signals. As a result, it is referred
to as a de-mux or data distributor.

Fig 1: Multiplexer and demultiplexer

The primary distinction between a multiplexer and a de-multiplexer is that a

multiplexer takes two or more signals and encodes them on a wire, whereas a de-
multiplexer does the opposite.
To pick a certain output, we must utilise a set of Select Lines, and the bit
combinations of these select lines govern which output line is linked to the input at
any given time.

Types of Demultiplexers:
Demultiplexers are classified into four types
1. 1-2 demultiplexer (1 select line)
2. 1-4 demultiplexer (2 select lines)
3. 1-8 demultiplexer (3 select lines)
4. 1-16 demultiplexer (4 select lines)

1-2 Demultiplexer:
A 1-to-2 demultiplexer consists of one input line, two output lines and one select line.
The signal on the select line helps to switch the input to one of the two outputs.

Fig 2: Function Table and Circuits of 1-2 Demultiplexer

1-4 Demultiplexer:
A 1-to-4 demultiplexer has a single input (D), two selection lines (S1 and S0) and four
outputs (Y0 to Y3). The input data goes to any one of the four outputs at a given time
for a particular combination of select lines.

1-8 Demultiplexer:
A 1-8 demultiplexer that consists of single input D, three select inputs S 2, S1 and S0
and eight outputs from Y0 to Y7. It is also called as 3-to-8 demultiplexer due to its
three select input lines and 8 output lines. It distributes one input line to one of 8
output lines depending on the combination of select inputs.

Conclusion:
In this Lab, we learned about demultiplexers which have wide applications in circuits.
We learned how they differed from multiplexers and decoders, mainly in terms of
working and function. We also learned about various types of demultiplexers and their
uses, we learned the operations performed on the demultiplexers and proved the input
values and their outputs.
