Heels has made music her life. She has an extensive background as a performer, a teacher of singing, and as an RCM examiner and adjudicator. Her beginning vocal studieswere taken with Flora Everett and Margaret Avard Wickett, both of Hamilton, Ontario. She continued her vocal studies in Montreal, in the U.S.A., and in Austria, with her primary teachers being Pauline Donalda, Bernard Diamant, Helen Hodam, Burton Garlinghouse, Pierre Bernac, Fritz Lehmann and William Eddy. While studying with Weldon Kilburn, she garnered a silver medal from the Royal Conservatory of Music for Grade 9 Piano. She has earned several degrees and diplomas including a Ph.D., M.A., B.Music, BA., F.T.C.L., LT. and A.R.C.T. Special Diploma. Currently, Dr. Heels maintains a private, thriving vocal studio in Hamilton, where she teaches beginners to advanced students and prepares them for RCMvoice examinations, as well as for Musical Theatre auditions and University entrance voice auditions. She is an active international adjudicator, and is a member of the College of Examiners of the Royal Conservatory of Music. As a Voice Examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music, she saw a need for a sight singing manual, with progressive sight singing examples geared to help students be more successful in the sight singing portion of their vocal examinations. And so, ‘Sight Singing for Success’ came to fruition! As a festival adjudicator, Joan has adjudicated musicfestivals across Canadaand internationally in the Bahamas since 1974, adjudicating mostly vocal and choral classes, but also on occasion, speech arts and drama, piano, brass and woodwind, strings, and steel bands. Joan was a reviewer of the RCM’sVoice Repertoire series, Resonance. She also is the assistant editor and music typesetter for the SING series of Songs for YoungSingers, published by Leslie Music Supply, Inc. ‘Asa member of Toastmasters, Dr. Heels has given workshopson evaluation techniques, judging contests, and parliamentary procedures. She has also presented workshops outlining the benefits of taking RCM voice examinations and has given feedback on mock voice examinations. Asan active member of Rotary, Zonta and Toastmasters International, Dr. Heels is committed to community service and ongoing education.
