Operating manual structure The E+L web guider operating manual consists of a general system
description (A), the individual component descriptions (B, C, ... W),
spare parts lists (X), parameter lists (Y) and wiring diagrams (Z).
Follow the operating manual instructions. All important operating
sequences are described in it. Where required, reference is made to
the individual descriptions.
A schematic of your system is contained in the block diagram. This
also lists the address settings for web guiders planned by E+L.
See the parameter lists for a description of the individual setup
parameters. See the"Setup editor" section for procedure on
checking/changing parameters.

Function

1. Function
1.1 Purpose Web guider SWS positions the moving web according to the web
edge and corrects deviations from the set position. Oscillating the
web around the set position is possible within the sensor measuring
range. On segmented roller guiders with two-part guiding slats, the
web is guided and spread also.
If a spreading device is implemented at the infeed, the curled edges
of the web are opened.
The use of an auxiliary drive prevents longitudinal creasing of the
web.

The web guider consists of the following components:

- a sensor to detect the actual position
- an actuating element (segmented roller guider) with actuator and
a return-to-center switch
- a digital controller DC .... or SE ..... .
optionally
- command device DO 10..
- command device NT ....
- web offset command device DO 001.
- remote display DO 002. oscillating function
- digital interface DI .... (e.g. CAN PLC, CAN ARCNET,
CAN INTERBUS)
- spreading device
- auxiliary drive

1.3 Operating principle The sensor determines the position of the web edge. If the web edge
deviates from its set position, the sensor sends the size and direction
of the deviation to the digital controller for evaluation purposes. The
position controller assures that the web is corrected back to its set
position via the actuating element (see control diagram).

KAP--250065-E-01 A Page 3
Function

1.3.1 Oscillation The oscillation function is used to displace the web to the left/right by
oscillation. Web guiding is continued during oscillation. The oscillation
time and stroke may be set by the remote display DO 002. oscillation
function or via setup parameters. The oscillation time for path-depen-
dent oscillation is determined by the on-site path sensor pulses.

device DO 10.. Commission the web guider without a web.

The meaning of the individual operating symbols is explained in
the relevant command device descriptions.
➜ Check that the individual connection lines are wired correctly.
➜ Connect all web guider devices to the power.
➜ Check the CAN bus connections. The web guider CAN bus con-
nections LEDs and the command devices will light up green, i.e.
operational. If a LED lights up red, there is a malfunction on this
CAN connection. Check the device and CAN cabling.
➜ Position and check sensor, set if necessary (e.g. adjustment etc.)
see sensor description.
The following procedures during commissioning must be perfor-
med for each digital controller separately when two or several digi-
ral controller are networked. Here, the device and group numbers
must always be entered at the points specified.

5.1 Spreading device ➜ See spreading device description.

(optional)

5.2 Auxiliary drive (optional) ➜ See aulixiary device description.

5.4 Basic settings Systems configured by E+L (Actuating element and web guider
delivered together) may skip sub-sections 5.4.1 - 5.4.3 of commis-
sioning. All sub-section steps must be performed for components
supplied separately or as spare parts.

5.4.1 Enter motor current The motor current must be entered as follows.
➜ Start setup mode.
➜ Enter the web guider control card device and group numbers.
➜ Select expanded setup mode.
➜ Select parameter 11 and enter the motor current (see typeplate).
➜ Quit setup mode.

5.4.2 Actuating element During the intialisation run, the controller counts the pulses emitted
initialization run by the actuator incremental encoder. On the basis of the counted
pulses and the maximum actuating path of the guiding slats at the
outfeed, the controller determines the gearing constant required for
precision guiding.
➜ Select center mode.

➜ Press and hold down the "Setup", press the "Increase value" key
once, then press the "Center position" key once. Release the
"Setup" key again. The actuating element initialisation run is
performed.

5.4.3 Web guider slats The web guider actuating range is that in which the segmented roller
actuating range and limits guider slats are displaced to the left/right. The maximum actuating
path of the guiding slats must be measured directly at the outfeed
during the initialisation run and entered as follows.
➜ Start setup mode.
➜ Enter the web guider control card device and group number.
➜ Select expanded setup mode.
➜ Select parameter 13 and enter the measured actuating path (e.g.
41) 41 = ±41 mm.
If the actuating path changes, an initialisation run must be perfor-
med in order to re-calculate the gearing constant.

To prevent the actuating element advancing to its mechanical end

position or screw stop in automatic mode, the actuating range limit
must be entered in parameter 9. The entered value should be
approx. 3 mm less than the value in parameter 13.
If this setting has to be corrected, proceed as follows:
➜ Select parameter 9 and enter the desired value (e.g. 38)
38 = ±38 mm).
➜ Quit setup mode.

A Page 10
Commissioning with command device DO 10..

5.5 Check center position ➜ Select center mode.

The actuating element moves into the center position established
during the initialisation run. If, in center position, the distance bet-
ween the right side (reference point) and right guide plate on the
actuating element and that of the left side (reference point) and
the left guide plate is not identical, proceed as follows:
➜ Start setup mode.
➜ Enter the web guider control card device and group numbers.
➜ Select expanded setup mode.
➜ Select parameter 16 and change the parameter value until the
center position is correct. Each change of the parameter value is
always performed immediately by the actuating element.
➜ Quit setup mode.

5.6 Actuating element effective ➜ Select automatic mode.

direction If the "guider stop" enable contact is connected, please ensure
that the precondition for enabling is provided, otherwise automatic
mode is inhibited.
➜ Simulate a web in the sensor measuring range (e.g. with a piece
of cardboard).
If the mock web is moved by hand in the direction of the sensor,
the actuating element must move the web in the opposite direction
(moving the web away from the sensor). If the web moves in the
same direction (in the direction of the sensor), reverse the effecti-
ve direction as follows:
➜ Start setup mode.
➜ Enter the web guider control card device and group numbers.
➜ Select expanded setup mode.
➜ Select parameter 12 and change the displayed parameter value
(0 or 1).
➜ Quit setup mode.
If the actuating element effective direction is changed an initialisa-
tion run must be performed and the center position checked.

A Page 11
Commissioning with command device DO 10..

5.7 Set oscillation mode ➜ Start setup mode.

➜ Enter the web guider control card device and group numbers.
➜ Select expanded setup mode.
➜ Select parameter 32 and, depending on the on-site command,
enter one of the following values.
0 = oscillation mode is activated along with automatic mode via
remote display DO 002. or digital interface DI .... (command
code).
1 = oscillation mode is activated along with automatic mode via
the "Automatic" key.
2 = oscillation mode is always switched off.
3 = oscillation mode is always activated along with automatic
mode. Guiding without oscillation is not possible.

5.8 Setting oscillation values With path-dependent oscillation (the number of path sensor pul-
ses determines the oscillation time), the following settings are
possible.
4 = oscillation mode is activated along with automatic mode via
remote display DO 002. or digital interface DI .... (command
code).
5 = oscillation mode is activated along with automatic mode via
the "Automatic" key.
6 = oscillation mode is always switched off.
7 = In automatic mode, oscillation is always activated also. Gui-
ding without oscillation is not possible.
➜ Quite setup mode.

➜ Start setup mode.

➜ Enter the web guider control card device and group numbers.
➜ Select expanded setup mode.
➜ Select parameter 20 and enter the desired oscillation mode.
The oscillation mode determines the signal progression supplied
by the oscillation generator to the control circuit (see control dia-
gram).
90 = delta-wave (shallow rise/drop of oscillation signal, short
dwelling period in the oscillation end position)
10 = square-wave (steep rise/drop of oscillation signal, long
dwelling period in the oscillation end position)
Signal progression may be adapted by values between minimum
and maximum.

A Page 12

Oscillation values (oscillation stroke, time) may be set directly du-

ring operation via remote display DO 002. , oscillation function. Wi-
thout a remote display DO 002. the oscillation values must be set
as follows via set-up parameters:
➜ Select parameter 18 and enter the desired oscillation stroke.
The oscillating stroke setting must not exceed the sensor propor-
tional range!
➜ Select parameter 19 and enter the desired oscillation time.
The length of a cycle (oscillation period) may be set as
- time-dependent in seconds/cycles or
- path-dependent with the no. of path sensor pulses/cycles
➜ Quit setup mode.

The web guider is now operational.

The web guider is set and tested by E+L. In most cases, good re-
sults are achieved with this setting. If this not the case, various
settings may be optimized, see "optimizaton" section.
Commissioning is thus complete.

7. Optimisation automatic mode, the actual web position value harmonises itself
7.1 Optimisation premises (equivalent value) with the set position value very quickly without
overshooting. The time required depends on the proportional
range and on the actuating range. No control is possible when
web speed is "0".
The aim of optimisation is to minimise the control difference (diffe-
rence between set and actual values) in all operational situations.
The relation "actuating range" to "proportional range" determines the
sensitivity (also called transmission factor G or proportional amplifi-

the sensitivity. The smaller the proportional range set, the bigger the
