Everyone knows to eat their fruits and vegetable, but what exactly is the difference? It’s
easy of course to tell that a banana is a fruit (it’s actually a type of berry) and lettuce is a
vegetable, but what about tomatoes? They have seeds, right? Is rice a vegetable?
The scientific definition of a fruit is the part of the plant that forms from the ovary of the
flower. Thus, only flowering plants can bear fruits. This is why tomato is considered a
fruit from a scientific standpoint – even though in the field of cooking it is often
considered a vegetable. Tomatoes have been confusing people for centuries. The United
States Supreme Court in 1893 had to rule whether it was a vegetable so that it could be
taxed appropriately.
It does not help of course that even within fruits; the naming can be very confusing. As
with the banana example above, it might also surprise you to learn that tomatoes and
grapes are technically berries, while strawberries and raspberries are not.
Vegetable on the other hand are scientifically defines as all plant life, meaning that fruits
are actually a type of vegetable. In everyday use, however, we often refer only to plants
that are green as vegetables, excluding fruits, nuts, cereal (including rice), seeds and
beans
