MATH Writting 1

This document provides examples and explanations of solving various math problems involving functions and domains. It asks the reader to find the domain of a given function, sketch a piecewise function with its domain, and analyze a cost function by finding the fixed cost, cost of a given quantity, and the domain and range when there is a maximum cost. It works through each problem step-by-step showing the work. It also provides a reference for an open-source algebra and trigonometry textbook.

For this written assignment, answer the following questions showing all of your work.

1. Find the domain of the function using interval notation.

We must exclude any numbers that result in a zero or a negative number under the square root in

the denominator. Also, inputs should have real number outputs. In addition, the denominator in

the function’s formula is an even root, so we need to set the radical greater than zero, as shown

below;

X- 4 > 0

X > 4 or -4 > -X Then we reverse the sign since it is negative, 4 < X.

The domain is 4 or any real number greater than 4 ( 4, ∞ )

Also, we need to consider the nominator for this fraction, which is X - 6 ⪄ 0 X ⪄6

, which gives us a domain of [ 6, ∞ ]

Then, by considering the two domains, we need to choose the greatest

domain, which is [ 6, ∞ ]

2. Sketch a graph of a piecewise function. Write the domain in interval notation.

[Suggestion: for example, go to www.desmos.com/calculator and write

for {-1 \leq x \leq 1}

and

y = 3x - 2 {1 \leq x \leq 3}

Then choose your own functions and have fun.]

A piecewise function requires more than one formula to determine the output over different

pieces of the domain, while each formula has its domains. The function's domain is a

combination of all of these smaller domains.

3.The cost in dollars of making x items is given by the function C(x) = 10x + 500.

a. The fixed cost is determined when zero items are produced. Find the fixed cost for this item.

We need to replace the X with zero for this equation.

C (0) = 10 (0) + 500 = 500 (The cost of zero items is 500 dollars.)
5

b. What is the cost of making 25 items? We have to substitute the X with 25 for this equation.

C (25) =10 ( 25) + 500 = 250+500 = 750 (The cost of making twenty-five items is 750 dollars.)

c. Suppose the maximum cost allowed is $1500. What are the domain and range of the cost

function, C(x)? Considering this equation, C(x) = 10x + 500, we need to apply $ 1500 to C ( x)

because it is the maximum cost, and the amount cannot exceed this price.

1500 = 10 x + 500

1500- 500 = 10 x

1000 = 10 x

X = 1000/ 10 = 100 ( A maximum of a hundred items can be made for $ 1500)

The domain represents all possible items that can be made, which is [ 0, 100]

The range shows all the prices for making the items, and it is [ 500, 1500]
