ISEE 2017 - Ring Blasting Mine To Mill

This document discusses ring blasting techniques used in underground mining. It notes that initial audits of blasting results, including ore loss, dilution, and explosive energy distribution, are important to understand actual performance versus design. The document describes optimizing the blasting process through iterations that increase energy levels and improve energy distribution while containing damage to design contours. This leads to improvements in ore fragmentation and recovery.

RING BLASTING MINE-TO-MILL

Ring Blasting is a very specific blasting technique used in underground mining. The principles that
good or bad blasting affects all subsequent mining operations (load-haul-crush-mill) apply in this case
in a wider sense, because a highly economical aspect as ore-loss and dilution control enter into the

STEP 1 – AUDIT INITIAL STATE

Mine to Mill in Ring Blasting needs to assess initial situation:

- Size distribution D80, D50, D20, fines Stope Design Limit
- Ore-Loss (%) = BIG MONEY
- Dilution - Overexcavation (%)
- Explosive Energy Distribution Ore Loss
- Powder Factor / Energy Factor (kj/t) (purple)
Dilution and Ore Loss
Up Hole Blasting Overexcavation 16,9 %
Down Hole Blasting Overexcavation 18,1 %
Up Hole Blasting ORE LOSS 20,8 %
Down Hole Blasting ORE LOSS 15,7 %

Actual situation

Designs are not always correct for achieving the primary goal of a blast. Even so, they usually are not
implemented as they are supposed to. Auditing the whole process is key to have a diagnosis of where and
why blasts perform in a certain way.

INCREASE ENERGY LEVEL AND DISTRIBUTION

INITIAL DESIGN ENERGY INCREASE ENERY DISTRIBUTION

Underground mining software designs do not allow for detailed analysis of explosive energy distribution. The
process, performed with Ring Blast Software 2DRing-JKSimBlast required several iterations in order to achieve
a proper equilibrium between increased energy in central areas and improved energy distribution in perimeter
areas while containing damage to design contours.
