Social Network Etiquette

With more than 500,000,000 members, Facebook has become one of the most
popular ways to communicate with friends, family, and business associates. And just
as there are proper rules for etiquette for face-to-face meetings, so are there proper
rules for online etiquette. Here are some tips that will help you avoid being
inconsiderate and will make your online followers grateful for having such a
thoughtful friend.

Be careful about over-sharing your every thought online. Before you start typing your
fiftieth status update for the day, ask yourself if you are over-sharing. You friends will
most likely be irritated by your constant food, weather, and mood status updates. It’s
best to limit yourself to one or two thoughtful or amusing status updates a day.

Don’t post every photo you take on your smartphone or digital camera. More
importantly, don’t post unflattering photos of your friends, family, or co-workers. The
last thing your Facebook friends want to see online is an embarrassing picture of
themselves at a birthday party or a restaurant. If you think your friends might be
uncomfortable about a particular photo, ask them for permission before posting it.
And don’t post it if they say no.

The Facebook chat function is great for a quick “same time” hello to your friends,
but try to limit its use. Even though your friends may have their Facebook chat
set to open, it doesn’t mean that it is a convenient time for them to talk. And don’t
be upset if your friends don’t respond immediately to your chat invitation. They
may not have time for a long chat, especially during work hours.

A five million
)
B fifty million

C five hundred million

C a status
