1. a) What is meant by plane stress analysis? Give examples. [4]

e) Derive the shape functions of 1D cubic element. [4]
f) What is a lumped mass matrix? Write the lumped mass matrix of a two node beam

b) Consider the following fig. An axial load P=250 KN is applied as shown. Using penalty
approach for handling boundary condtions, do the following

6. Derive the strain displacement matrix of two dimensional four noded isoparametric [16]
elements.

7. a) Consider the shaft with rectangular cross section shown in the figure. Determine the terms [12]
twisting moment (M), shear modilis of the material (G) and angle of twist per unit length
(α). Consider the domain discretization as shown.

b) What is consistent mass matrix? Derive the consistent mass matrix of a two node bar [4]
