PROJECT OVERVIEW:
You will produce a :45-60 How-To Video on a topic of your choice. The video must include
a title graphic with How-To topic, music, 10+ active visuals, screen text and/or dialogue.

STEP 1: Explain How-To Topic
In the space below, explain why you selected this topic. How will you break down the
topic to viewers in one minute? What visuals will you show? (4-5 sentences)

STEP 2: Complete Simple Storyboards (Grade #1: 15 pts.)
Plan the visuals for your How-To Video. Include camera angles, shot descriptions, and
on-screen text. Every new shot should be illustrated in its own storyboard frame.
*If you will be talking in the video, write out what you plan to say.
STEP 3: Get Plan Approval from Instructor Approval date:
Present storyboards to instructor and explain your How-To Video plan. ___________
STEP 4: Film How-To Video
Gear Up: camera, tripod, SD card, headphones, microphone/mic cables (or phone/device)
Film: follow your storyboards to stay on track. Make sure your shots are steady, well
lit, and have good composition. Use a microphone to capture clear audio (if narrating).
Check Video: playback recorded videos to ensure everything looks + sounds good!
STEP 5: Edit How-To Video
Set-up Project: Create a new folder on your computer/device called “How To Video.”
Import your clips to your folder. Create a new project called “How To Video” in your
editing program or app. Import media from the folder into your editing project.
Edit Video! Stay focused on what you are trying to explain in your How-To video. Keep it
simple, on point, and with visuals (video or graphics) that walk a viewer through the
steps.
Include Intro Title GFX/Graphics/Music: add an Intro Title GFX in the beginning of
your video that identifies your How-To Topic on Line 1 and Your Name on Line 2. Add
additional text, graphics, and copyright-free music.
Check Audio Levels: ensure audio can be clearly heard (aim for -12dB to -6dB).
STEP 6: Export How-To Video
Watch Back Entire Sequence: make sure there are no black holes, repeated footage,
audio mishaps or distractions. If all looks good, it’s time to export!
Export How-To Video: export your video and submit to instructor for grading.
