Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The world has been facing Coronavirus disease and has produced exceptional

challenges, particularly in Educational sectors. In the Educational context, to give a quality

education despite of the lockdown policy implemented by the government, the New Normal

Education arises. It should be put in consideration in order to continue the teaching-learning

process of an individual. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, different answers were presented by

many countries to be able to start the school year 2020-2021 – providing online sessions.

Online learning platforms such as Google, TV Broadcast, guidelines, resources,

video lectures, and online channels were introduced in the new normal education

(UNESCO, 2020). In Higher Education, students are exposed in the new normal way of

learning wherein they are involved in virtual meetings. The Commission on Higher Education

proposed to toughen online platforms such as but not limited to Google classroom,

messenger, zoom, Edmodo, Facebook, and YouTube (CHED, 2020). It is clearly stated that

learning should not be limited only for using these online platforms because not all students

are capable to have the strong internet connection. This is one of the challenges

encountered by the students in today’s new normal education.

In the New Normal Education, the way of teaching and learning is far different from

the way how it used to be wherein there is a face to face interaction among teachers and

students, unlike in the situation today teachers and students are doing virtual meetings.

According to Cottle (2020), as the remote learning trend like from the traditional face to face
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 2

class to online mode of learning real quick, learning strategy has been the primary way to

cope up and still continue learning process. Students become more flexible and adaptable

because they acquire the ability to become more independent enough. Since the online

learning can turned out into synchronous and asynchronous, students can learn anytime

and anywhere. Additionally, this will be a great potential for them to become comfortable in

studying and allows them to grow individually. Most of the students are now experiencing

problems on how they will manage their time and also what will be the strategies that will

easily help them to learn in this kind of situation. Looking at how students encountered

problems and struggling on how they will cope up in the new normal education, how come to

those students who are studying and working at the same time.

Combining working with academic study is very typical nowadays. It is becoming a

normal phenomenon in every school and university in the country. Most of the students who

are engaged in part-time working are college students (Amour, 2019). Basically, they are

looking for jobs to cushion their needs during this pandemic with much demands need.

Student’s job become a sort of trend for those students who want to work while studying to

meet their needs and cope up with the constant increase of living cost. Previous studies

shown that working while studying can be beneficial for the students, it will help them to

gained experiences that will serve as a good background for them when they start to work

after graduation. Additionally, it is a good way for them to improve their time management

skills. Working student needs to master their time management skills as they balance to

study and work at the same time.

Time management can be one of the difficulties encountered by the students when

they are juggling work and school. Time management can be draw as an act of arranging

your schedule in a way that you achieve your goals efficiently and effectively (Chen, 2011).
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 3

In the case of the working students, working while studying in college helps them to prioritize

their time. It is their way to survive in college as they study and work at the same time. Time

management is creating your timetable that will help you to be able to have routines for

studying. It is a to-do-list for which you are making every minute and second worthy and

efficient. Furthermore, using time efficiently allows students to accomplish more in less time

since their focus is not wasting their time.

As we get into higher level of education, it more requires deeper understanding and

effort to be exerted in learning. Education seems to have development that leads to have

new strategy that will promote, encourage and strengthen learning, providing more

meaningful and enriching experience for the different stakeholders in the process (Carillo,

2012). Learning strategy is for student’s strategy in acquiring and gaining knowledge.

Strategies in learning will be essential for the students to cope up with the situation as well

as in understanding a particular lesson. Learning strategy is an approach made by the

students to accomplish a specific task. It is a way for the students to be able to have their

learning setting that will help them to further understand the lesson.

Aside from the time management skills that is needed in order to balance the tasks

and responsibilities of students who work and study at the same time they are also requires

to have a specific learning strategy which will help them to learn and understand a particular

lesson. In an article written by Latheef (2020), human interaction and connection has been

the primary frustrations of online or virtual mode of learning. Professors and students want

the real time engagement rather than online engagement. Moreover, there are learning

strategies that students should take into consideration in today's learning. First strategy that

should acquire is to plan and organize thoughtfully every lesson in order for the students to

run lessons and learning smoothly. Another strategy is to build social interaction not just
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 4

from the teacher itself but also from other students in order for those working students to

have peers that they can talk to whenever there are things need to accomplish and also to

help them boost their socializing skills.

The purpose of this study is to determine the level of time management and the

learning strategies of working college students in the new normal education. To be able to

know the level of time management of the students, the students should effectively using

prioritizing, scheduling and goal setting as a result of an effective time management. The

researcher seeks to find out if these students are effectively managing their time and what

learning strategies they used in order to achieve their goals as they work and study at the

same time. This is also helpful for those working students to cope and learn strategies to

overcome the challenges they encounter in the new normal education. This will also serves

as motivation and inspiration for those non-working students.

Theoretical Framework

This presents the relevant theories in this study, “Time Management and Learning

Strategies of College Working Students in the New Normal Education”.

An article in 2020 posted by Serene stated that there are seven major theories about

time management that are already tested and reviewed. These are the most popular time

management theories that can be a help for all students to be more productive.

Theory of Covey Time Management Matrix. This theory was formulated by

Stephen R. Covey(1989). He popularized this theory on his book entitled “7 Habits of Highly

Effective People,” explaining that managing time itself in this generation is no longer the

goal but addressing where to focus at any particular time. Covey developed a technique on

setting priorities and uses a four quadrant system to categorize each task based on its
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 5

urgency and importance. This will help the learners to choose what tasks need to address

immediately or the tasks that you can delay.

The “Theory of Covey Time Management Matrix” can be very helpful for all the

students, particularly in working students, because it talks about the ways in managing time

effectively and efficiently. This can be a guide for those working students to set priorities,

give more importance for things that are much needed attention, and knowing what should

be put first when juggling time for studying while working. In that way, students who are

working can easily manage their time when they finally know and learn about these

techniques by Covey. This can be a help for all working students to accomplish all the tasks

they needed to comply in a particular subject area.

The Pomodoro Technique. It was developed by Francesco Cirillo and a technique

for time management wherein it is a tool that breaks work into 25-minute sessions to assist

an individual to stay focused and get more done. There are six steps for it to be done, first is

to choose a task; second is to set a timer for 25 minutes; third is work on the task until the

timer goes off, fourth is once the time goes off, check off the item on a piece of paper; fifth is

take a short break and lastly, in every four Pomodoros, take a longer break.

The Pomodoro Technique can be one of the time management that can be very

helpful for working students for them to be able to manage their time effectively and

efficiently. This can be the time management that may be applied by students especially

working students who are most likely to have difficulties in juggling their time as they study

and work at the same time.

The Pickle Jar Theory. It uses metaphor to demonstrate basic point of time

management: an individual must do the foremost important tasks to begin with; otherwise,

you will never get around to them. The metaphor is when you imagine a table in the front
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 6

having an empty pickle jar, some rocks, some pebbles and some sand. The jar represents

the time, the rocks represent the important tasks, the pebbles are less important tasks and

the grains of sand are the unimportant tasks in life. Knowing this theory, an individual must

start with the rocks as it is the most important tasks and the next thing is to pour all the other

tasks based on its importance to be able to fit in the time needed.

The Pickle Jar Theory will help the students to distinguish tasks that are important,

less important and those tasks that are not important. It is very much important for students

specifically for working students to know what tasks should be put first for them to

accomplish what needs to accomplish.

The ABC Method. This method was developed by Alan Lakein, he is the author of

the popular book How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life. It is a strategy on setting

priorities for the tasks that is included in the to-do list. This method makes an individual to

categorize tasks as A, B, and C. For A, these are the important tasks that should be done

right away, B are the tasks that are important but not needed to be done right away while C

are those tasks are not important and have no deadlines.

The ABC Method is a method wherein it will help the learner to set priorities for all

the tasks that is needed to accomplish within a specific time. Learning this strategy can be a

way for an individual to easily distinguish tasks that are more important from those tasks that

are not needed too much attention. It is related to this study through its technique that can

be adapted by students specifically for those working students.

The Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule). This 80/20 rule was created by economist

Vilfredo Pareto and this is applicable rule for all area that will be very helpful in managing

time. The Pareto Principle would attest that 20% of the activities that is being done in a day
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 7

that produces 80% of the outcomes Or, by lessening distractions by 20%, it will increase the

productivity of an individual by 80%.

This Pareto Principle is a technique wherein it will help an individual to manage their

time effectively and efficiently. An individual may choose to produce 80% of the outcomes or

lessening distractions by 20% in this case, every learner can be very productive in way that

they are fulfilling what needs to be done before the deadline.

Parkinson’s Law. It was created by British naval historian and author Cyril

Northcote Parkinson; he mentioned that “work expands so as to fill the time accessible for

its completion”. This technique explains that if a work is needed to be done in a week, it

should be done in a week. It said that an individual is starting to schedule based on the

amount of time they have to accomplish all the tasks before its deadline.

The Parkinson’s Law is a technique for all students so that they can balance their

time as they work and study at the same time. They can apply this technique through

making a plan for all the tasks and responsibilities that they need to accomplish within a day,

week, month, or even in a year. Planning ahead is a way of managing time so that they

don’t need to hurry up things to be accomplished.

The ALPEN Method. This method was introduced by German economist Lothar J.

Seiwer, the ALPEN method’s name is an acronym for German words. There are five steps

to be done in this method, first is to create a to do list before you begin the day; second is to

estimate how long each item will take you; third is allow 40% as “buffer time” things such as

breaks and little tasks, fourth is to prioritize each task and delegate where you can and lastly

is to take notes during the day and check off items as they are completed.

This technique can be used by working students even non-working students for them

to be able to manage their time as well as to practice their time management skills that can
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 8

be one important skills as they get into the field in the future. Aside from learning this

technique, it also enhances one’s ability to handle heavy loads that they may encounter

when working and studying at the same time.

As for the learning strategies, there are four major learning theories that are involved

on how an individual can learn.

Behaviorist Theory. Behaviorist Learning Theory or what we called Behaviorism is

an idea from B.F. Skinner which explains that learning starts through the use of rewards or

punishments. This theory is commonly used in classrooms as an instrument for behavior

management. There are two practices that are involved in this theory, the rote practice and

repetition. Skinner said that rewards can increase the likelihood that a behavior will be

repeated while punishments decrease the likelihood that a behavior will be repeated.

This learning theory shows that an individual can learn through receiving a reward or

punishment. An individual who always receive rewards because of his or her action can be

more motivated to do good for the sake of the reward and as for the punishment, an

individual may lessen his or her bad actions that causes him or her to receive a punishment.

It can be a learning strategy for every student to be motivated to learn when they receive

reward as a return for the hard work they have done.

Social Learning Theory. This theory proposed by Albert Bandura (1977) highlighted

about the essentials of observing, modelling, and imitating the behaviour of other people.

Social learning involves two factors which are the environmental and cognitive factors, on

how will these factors interact to affect human learning and behaviour. He also added two

main ideas, which are the mediating processes occur between stimuli & responses and

behaviour takes place from the environment through the process of observational learning.
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 9

The “Social Learning Theory” is a strategy for learning that can be acquire by

students, mostly working students, for them to be able to easily understand the lesson.

Applying this learning theory can be a help for those student who wok and study at the same

time so that they can understand the lesson in a way that they are also making interaction

with their peer groups. Social Learning Theory is a learning strategy that can be very useful

for every individual for them to have a better understanding.

Cognitive Theory. Cognitive Learning Theory is a work from Jean Piaget wherein

he focuses on how mind is involved in the learning process. Piaget relate his idea through

the use of a computer, he explains that a mind is just like a computer wherein it gets all the

idea and information, processes the ideas, then uses all the ideas to produce learning

outputs. He introduced the four stages of development that allows the ability of the learner to

understand abstract and complex ideas.

This theory explains that an individual is learning through his or her mind when they

are starting to take all the information and process them to have learning outcomes. It

suggested that some learners rely on what their mind takes and mentally process it to have

learning. It is related to the study in a way that it tells that learners are continuously learning

through his or her mind.

Humanist Theory. Humanist Learning Theory explains that learning is a way to

satisfy an individual’s potential rather than achieving specific learning goals. This theory is

much related to the Maslow’s research on the Hierarchy of Needs which emphasized the

cognitive and affective needs of an individual. It focuses on the self-actualization of every

individual to learn. Learners are assigned to identify their own priorities, goals, set standards

and to assess their own work. Students are the main focus of the Humanist classroom.
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 10

This theory is related to the study wherein it focuses on how an individual learn to

evaluate their own selves. It can be a strategy for students to learn their own potential and

ability as a learner to have a better understanding in every lesson. It will helps student

specifically students who are working and studying at the same time so that they can learn

easily even they are having heavy loads and other responsibilities.

Conceptual Framework

The research paradigm shows how the research will take place through the I-P-O or

the Input-Process-Output system. The input is consisting of the following questions like what

is the level of time management of the working college students in terms of prioritizing,

scheduling and goal setting; what are the learning strategies being used by the working

students; and what are the lived experiences of working students in the new normal

education. On the other hand, the process being used is through survey questionnaires,

conducting an interview and the collected data will undergo analysis, and interpretation. The

results were assessed and interpreted in the output to find out the students’ level of time

management and their learning strategies during this new normal education.

study answered the survey questionnaire with all honesty. The researchers also assumed

that the responses of the participants showed that they have an effective time management

and learning strategies during this new normal education.

Statement of the Problem

The general problem of the study is: How do working college students use their time

management and learning strategies in the new normal education?

Specifically, this study sought answers to the following questions:

1. What is the level of time management of the working college students in terms of:

1.1 Prioritizing

1.2 Scheduling

1.3 Goal Setting

2. What are the learning strategies used by working college students to cope in the

New Normal Education?

3. What are the Lived Experiences of working college students in the new normal

education?

Scope and Limitation of the Study

This study was undertaken to know the level of working college students in

managing their time and what learning strategies they use in the new normal education in

Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Santa Maria Bulacan Campus. The study was

limited only for working students who are currently enrolled in the campus in the First
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 13

semester Academic Year 2020-2021. The researcher conducted a pre-survey to know the

number of working students inside the campus as the respondents of this study.

This study was mainly focused to those working students in Polytechnic University of

the Philippines, Santa Maria Bulacan Campus specifically, from the program of Bachelor of

Secondary Education Major in Mathematics and English and also from Bachelor of Science

in Hospitality Management. The researcher chose the two programs as the respondents of

this study because they know how capable these students in managing time and also in how

they will learn during this pandemic. The researchers were purposively selected 80 random

college students as the respondents of this study. The aim of this study was to determine

the time management and learning strategies of working college students in the new normal

education.

The descriptive research design and phenomenological research design was used in

the study. The instrument that was used in gathering data will be structured interviews and

surveys on time management and learning strategies use by the college working students.

Significance of the Study

The New Normal Education

The current pandemic of COVID-19 has created exceptional challenges and has

impacted the educational sectors, and no one knows when it will stop. Plans and procedures

on how to contain the virus are currently being introduced by every country, and infections

are still continuously growing. In the educational sense, the new standard should be taken

into account in the preparation and implementation of the ‘new normal educational policy' in

order to preserve and provide quality education despite lockdown and community

quarantine (Tria, 2020).

Snelling & Fingal (2020) stated that at this time of pandemic where coronavirus

outbreak is anywhere, schools even work are shifting from face to face learning to the so-

call new normal education. This new normal mode of learning is said to slow the rapid

increase of the virus, and this is an effective strategies to still continue educational learning.

And this new normal learning is a positive idea for several working college students since

the demand to go to school as per schedule would not be a daily demand nowadays. It is

just a matter of attending class or just to go to work. Sometimes, this scenario take an
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 17

opportunity for the student to enjoy employment, working students can study after work

using instructional materials since the new normal education is also a blended learning. This

blended learning wherein the face to face classes turn into modular and online mode of

learning. Sometimes, this new normal learning is a roadblock where students can't be able

to anticipate and take actions. Online learning also provides a great opportunity for digital

etiquette to be checked and digital citizenship integrated into online collaboration activities.

Tanhueco-Tumapon (2020) called the new situation as ‘adopt quickly’ wherein it will

be the response of the students as well as the teachers to the new normal way of giving

instruction and learning in the midst of the pandemic. Academic Institution need to

strategized and reinforced more modes in teaching and learning within the new normal

education. The readiness of the schools are in terms of technical infrastructure is still a

question. Reopening of the schools at this stage can be an expensive one (Felter &

Maizland, 2020).

Ceniza (2020) explains that new normal is the outcome of this pandemic, and it has

affected every aspects in life of an individual, including their daily routine, jobs and also in

education. Before this new normal, teachers and students are already using these

technologies in the face-to-face interaction but they are now using these through virtual

sessions. Department of Education presented three modalities in which students and

teachers will be able to exchange knowledge despite of the situation. These includes

distance learning, blended learning, and homeschooling.

Moreover, Lagua (2020) said that education is the most affected by this crisis

because of the lockdown implemented by the government. As an outcome of this situation,

online learning was implemented to still provide the quality education in the Philippines. This

challenge the teachers to encourage their students to be actively engaged in the new
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 18

normal way of learning. Instructors should be able to innovate different strategies for the

students to adapt in the new situation and also learn as well.

However, Magsombol (2020) revealed that there is really a gap for children who can

and cannot manage the materials needed to assist the new education platform due to

sudden changes in how learners will acquire knowledge in today’s situation. The general

condition of students within the public school systems relay their message about the

inequality regarding to DepEd’s mantra ‘no child left behind.’ Despite of this, learning should

not be cancelled as much as to drive the economy. This driven to a more tightly measure for

instruction to provide a quality education in spite of the looming chance.

Kasrekar (2020) found out that one of the issues seen is the conduct of classes in

spite of the closure arrange. The most feasible solution to continue the learning process of

every child is through online teaching and learning due to the higher risk of spread when

face to face classes happen. This new program challenges both the instructors and the

learner because it happens something unused to them.

Working Students

The Aspire Coronation Trust or ACT Foundation (2014) defines that the working

students are the individuals who are working and studying at the same time. A work and

study style, it says that the student is engage on formal studying and working so that they

can sustain their needs.

Additionally, Kerr (2020) said that involvement in employment while in college help

students to sustain their personal needs, provide for themselves and also, it allows students

to acquire work experience that can be useful once they finished college. This can be an

edge for them from other non-working students, and it said that have higher chance to earn
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 19

more in the future because of the experience they had, advance resume, and stronger

personality.

Working while attending college is a bit challenging but it can give advantages for

those students who choose to work and study at the same time. These benefits incorporate

preventing from having debts, it also an opportunity for an individual to gain experiences,

especially when it is related to the students’ area of study, it also enhances the time

management skills of the students that will be really a good attribute when they already in

the field of working after college, when student begins to learn to manage their time

effectively this will be the start for them to have better grades, and also some companies

are offering employee benefits wherein an individual can acquire health insurance and even

tuition assistance when working and studying at the same time (Caldwell, 2020).

Phương Trà (2015) emphasizes the advantages of students when they are engaged

in employment. Firstly, students will be able to earn money to provide their personal needs

and also to help their family. Secondly, by working, students are learning experiences which

they may apply in their real life situation, and lastly, they can have more opportunities in the

industry because of what they have learned through part time working. They can succeed in

both work and study when they have a systematic plan to balance their time.

Students’ Reasons why they are working

According to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), around 216,000

students in the country are currently misrepresenting school and work. It is common that

students are mostly working in food industry, online marketing, and sales department.

Financial crisis is one of the reasons why students are engaged in employment. It also

added that because of higher commodity prices and tuition fees, these students are forced
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 20

to work independently, especially during this pandemic time. As time passes, students need

more and more financial support to cover their expenses for daily living, and studying since

the price of every single thing becomes more expensive. CHED recommended that the

student must incline to job that are not too demanding to work for in order for them to can

still prioritize study. Becoming a working college student is very stressful, especially to the

part of balancing time for studying, family, social life, and even to the work itself.

There is an extensive number of college students in today’s situation are working,

but they differ in the sum and sort of work. Also, the reasons behind those discrepancy

aren’t similar. Students who are involved in employment has their own different reasons why

they choose to be a part-time worker (Amour, 2019).

Desrochers & Kirshtein (2012) explains that affording college seems to be hard by

many. With the continuous growth of tuition fee and other expenses, the family in the middle

class may find it difficult to sustain the need of their student, so the college is not easily

attainable as it is. So the student will think many ways to support their needs, especially in

education, so being working student is one way to support their studies because of

continuous growth of expenses, especially in tuition cost. So as being working students will

fill the gap.

Walter (2020) said that the accessibility in education has been a major issue in the

Philippines because of the incapability of many families to send their children to school. This

can be the reason why there are lot of students who tried to work and study at the same

time for them to be able to pursue their education. The result of this issue is for having an

extensive number of working students in the Philippines. To attain education despite of

being financially instable, majority of Filipino students are balancing their time as they study

and work at the same time. Most commonly known works of a student nowadays are being
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 21

crews and cashier and also doing online jobs due to the pandemic. Being a working student

helps them to become more resilient, persevere and work hard. Though it may be hard, but

it is fulfilling when you succeed in both of their job and academic responsibilities.

Nucum (2018) stated that in the past years until now, the idea behind work-study

balance, including time and effort, has been the most used experienced of a student. And

the reason why students engaged to job employment for a part time work is because of

financial crisis and stability. Since studying while working is a very hustle thing, social time

for family, friends, and loved ones fades. He also suggests some ways to easily emerged in

school and work, and the first a student must do is to find some educational assistance or

scholarship that may support financially. This will make the students to not exert more time

for working. In addition, another way is to create timetable wherein organized time for

studying is indicated. In this instance, studying is still taken into consideration, and the

working phase will still fit to the schedule of learning phase.

There are many reasons why being a working student can assist both the college life

and future career of an individual, and that includes gaining experience from the field, as

well as making few additional money. Kristian (2020) listed five reasons why being a working

student is genuinely great including it provides opportunity to gain experience from it, it can

help an individual to build friendship and business relationship with other people in the field,

working while studying allow the student to earn money on their own, it also enhances the

skills of an individual especially abilities like communication, teamwork and leadership, and

last reason is that makes an individual more ambitious in a good way because they can still

manage their time as they study and work at the same time. Students who are involved in

employment is good in time management as they tend to balance their life and still have a

good experience while working.

Programs for the Student Employment in the Philippines

The number of students who are involved in employment is getting bigger. That is

why there are various programs that was implemented in the Philippines to support the

youth employment. Here are some of the programs in the Philippines that is really essential

for all students who are in need financially and also it give opportunities to gain experiences

from working.

The Philippines Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA)

assist Enterprised-Based Programs, which is a training and employment programs

implemented within companies, including their Apprenticeship Program, Leadership

Program, and Dual Training System. It can benefits trainees/students, companies, schools,

parents, teachers, and others. This can help students to enhance their skills, have proper

training for employment, and it also provide allowance for transportation and other expenses

needed.

The Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) is DOLE’s youth

employment-bridging program which points to help poor students but deserving students or

out of school-youth within the age of 15 but not more than 30 years of age to be employed

during summer or/on Christmas vacation or any time of the year for them to be able to still

pursue their education. Students who work in this program can guarantee an incentives

providing them to pay only 60% of their salaries; and the 40% through education vouchers

to be paid by the government. According to SPES Placement, from the year 1993 to 2012

there are more than 1.8 million of students are benefitted from this program.

Additionally, The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has reported the

drafting of a Career Guidance Advocacy Plan 2017-2022 to get the data and give instruction
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 23

about career and education or preparing alternatives for young people so that they will be

able to create the most of the opportunities that are accessible to them. Career Guidance

Advocacy Program aims to strengthen the Public Employment Service Offices (PESOs) and

also to develop career guidance programs which will help the students to be assisted in their

chosen career in the future.

Kabataan Program is a year-round program in the support for the in the vision of

former President Fidel V. Ramos. It encourages all high school students, college students,

and also for out-of-school youth to be involve in constructive and productive activities

throughout the year. This program provides financial assistance to the youth to sustain their

educational needs and also their personal needs and to contribute to the nation. There are

components under Kabataan Program which also encourages high school students, college

students, and out-of-school youth to provide more opportunities, and it also aims to involve

the youth in community service.

Government Internship Program (GIP) is one of the component in KABATAAN 2000

under Executive Order (EO) no. 139 s. 1993, and DOLE Administrative Order No. 260-15,

which also aims to give opportunities and attract young workers to serve in general public in

government agencies, whether it is national or local level. To supply youthful specialists,

especially the poor/indigent and youthful specialists, opportunity to illustrate their talents and

abilities within the field of public service with the extreme objective of drawing in the most

excellent and the brightest who need to seek after a career in government benefit, especially

within the areas and disciplines related to labor and work.

Work Appreciation Program (WAP) is also a component KABATAAN 2000, which is

a training strategy wherein there is no employer-employee relationship. It provides the youth

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 24

to appreciate the importance of work and gain proper ethics by allowing them to work in the

actual field. Participants must be 18 – 25 years of age, unemployed, in school or out-of-

school youth, and should be physically ready for the training to be undertaken.

Program on Literacy cum Livelihood, Culture, Arts (PLLCA) is a component of

KABATAAN 2000 which points to engage the youth with devisable information, state of

mind, and values to create them self-reliant, capable, beneficial, sympathetic, and upright

citizens who can contribute to the economical improvement of the nation.

Definition of Time Management

Kurzawska (2020) stated that time management refers to arranging and organizing a

day in a way that you simply get the foremost out of it, feel relieved and fulfilled, and at the

same time it comes up to best work results. It helps to lessen the workload, arrange and

work successfully, and maximize the results by minimizing the input.

Kottler (2011) also explained time management is considered as kind of life

management, and controlling one’s life implies controlling the time, and controlling the time

means a person is controlling life events. It simply stated how people must learn how to

manage their time to have a systematic way of living. This will allow them to have assistance

to keep track of their accomplishment and will make them more eager to do more as they

get to know their capabilities. This will also help them to know which task to be prioritized

and to avoid them from doing such habits that is not needed more attention.

An article in 2021 posted by Indeed Editorial Team define the time management as

learning how to manage time effectively can improve the career of an individual wherein

they try to organize their time to complete work on time. Time management are a set of
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 25

skills that will enable you in properly managing your time. The following are some of the

most critical time management skills: Prioritization, Goal-setting and Scheduling. Firstly,

Prioritization refers to which task should be put first and an individual must learn how to

prioritize their duties. Being a good time manager requires you to prioritize and of your

duties. There are several techniques for prioritizing the tasks. You may decide to start with

fast, simple tasks and work your way up to longer, more involved tasks. You may also

prioritize your tasks by beginning with the most time-sensitive and working your way down,

or a combination of both. Secondly, Goal-setting is considered as the first step to be a good

time manager. Goal-setting helps you to clearly identify your end goal and the specific tasks

that must be completed to complete it. Setting both short and long-term goals will help you

achieve career success. Lastly, Scheduling as an important aspects of time management.

Sticking to your schedule would be easier if you schedule out your day, meetings, and how

you'll get things done efficiently.

A journal in 2015 posted by WPM TEAM stated that time management is considered

as the learner’s capability to manage their time effectively, which includes objective setting,

prioritization, organizing skill, and numerous skills. Good and effective time managements of

students tends to have great benefits. There are five benefits of time management such as

students who knows how to practice proper time management gets more free time, creating

viable time management skills guide the person through the craftsmanship of denying and

delaying procrastination and educates the person to prioritize tasks, students with good and

effective time management abilities tend to have lesser disappointment, this skill educates

an individual to live in a systematic way additionally to discharge his mind from the

contemplations of the unfinished works and lastly, the ability of great time management can

offer assistance to gain a sense of achievement and peace of intellect (wmpmagazine.com).

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 26

Furthermore, Chen (2011) explains that time management is not just all about the

task being done, but it is about how a person can balance their in a way that they enjoy their

selves and also the things they do. In addition to this, there are different scenarios wherein

time management is essential, which include at school, at work, commuting, family time,

socializing, love life, and sleep. At school wherein, it is not just about the classes, but the

sum of exerted effort and time spent on reading, studying, preparing, and reflecting school;

At work, whereas working full time or part time requires to take care of financial needs

although it is a way for the student to learn how to keep balance. In commuting wherein

waiting for a public transport is consuming a lot of time for a day. Also, family time requires

time management spending a day with them is needed to maintain a good relationship to

them. Socializing is where people get to enjoy their time with their friends and make use of

the time freely. Love life, once a person is in a relationship, it takes commitment and time to

give. Lastly, sleep it must be a priority, and a person should at least sleep 6-8 hours a day to

make everything in life much easier. Enough sleep also helps to keep up the energy and

makes you to focus to prevent stress-related problems.

Time Management Among Students

Elliot (2013) explained that time management is a skill that makes children to

prioritize errands and precisely judge the amount of time required to accomplish them. This

allows them to accomplish all the tasks systematically and learn to oversee and adhere to a

plan. It includes children observing their own efforts and actions, having a suitable way to

complete assignments, and having the capacity to effectively take after step-by-step

methods.
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 27

Article in 2015 posted by Apointment Plus said that proper time management permits

an individual to achieve more in a shorter period of time, which leads to more vacant time,

which lets them to take advantage of learning openings, relieve the stress, and helps to be

more concentrate in life, which guide to more career success (appointmentplus.com).

Clark (2014) said how essential managing time is for a students to achieve their

goals in life. It can be challenging to most of the students if they don’t know how to get

started. Productivity, adequacy, self-understanding, and exact time utilization are the

significance time management. It creates an awareness to monitor one’s self at all times

and also to look for unimportant activities which does not need more attention. Additionally,

Clark (2014) emphasized the importance of daily plan in every student in an institution. Time

management can be used in different field such as work, study, and leisure activities.

Learning how to use time efficiently can balance everything, and this will also help the

students to achieve their goals in timely manner and to have a well-organized plan in order

to accomplished all the tasks given.

Panigrahi (2021) explained that time management plays a vital role in student’s life

allowing them to learn more at a quicker pace. Each students needs to accomplish a

specific set of curriculum within a year or semester. In this case, students are having

difficulties managing their time toward academics, project, assignments, together with the

preparation for an examination. Incapable to divide the time fairly for each subject, learners

frequently prefer last-minute arrangement that results them scoreless but also hinders their

learning capability. By acknowledging the value of time and utilizing it viably to focus on the

objective, they are able to accomplish a part more with less efforts. Time management skills

upgrade the choice making capability but also helps to become successful by taking control
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 28

in life. An individual who learns to oversee time fulfills half of the work done even before

doing it.

Chen (2011) made a list of techniques to take control over time. It includes: Do less,

not more; Figure out what’s getting in the way; Getting a calendar; making a list of takes and

checking it regularly; find balance and making some necessary cuts to avoid work overload.

These are the techniques that a working student may use in order for them to balance their

time as they study and work at the same time.

When juggling work and school, time management can be a challenge. Balancing

professional and academic life is not that simple errand, particularly when there are still

extra obligations for competing time such as working while studying. It is not really having a

hard time for scarce or lack of time but on how people manage their time effectively and

efficiently (Cooper, 2020).

Definition of Learning Strategies

According to Tay (2013), learning strategies are the total effort and time of a student

in order to simulate and adapt for the lessons of every subject. It is also how the students

learn in a process of obtaining knowledge and information, given that many circumstances

are taken into consideration. Learning strategies can be learned and changed since working

students have limited and diverse time. Their prioritization phase was divided into studying

and work. Moreover, the amount of time spent on for the job working were very much

scrutinized simultaneously to the learning phase. In fact, because of the demand at work,

working students would be commonly detracted from studying, but then they have these

learning strategies where they able to manage their time and allot spare time for studying.
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 29

Carbonero, Román, and Ferrer (2013) created a learning strategy program that

includes organization, elaboration, and application-transfer methods. They discovered that

elaboration, transfer, and performance in the course activities were all improved.

An article by Student Wellness Centre in 2017 stated that learning strategies will not

only help the students inside the campus, but this can also be a good help to an individual to

succeed in life. Proper study skills can enhance the confidence, competence, and self-

esteem of every learner. This is also a way to improve their ability to learn more and keep

knowledge in mind. Engaging in outside aspects and activities inevitably in job serve

many challenging purpose like serving the learning strategies into more effective and

efficient way and served as an educational competency of every working students (Fazal,

2012).

Learning Strategies Among Students

An article posted by Oxford Learning in 2017 states that taking organized and keep

notes is the most effective learning strategies that can help progress your understanding

and review of what you have got learned in class. Also, better notes will assist you to keep

in mind concepts, create significant learning aptitudes, and pick up a much better

understanding of a point. Effective notes will indeed lead to less stress when test time

comes around.

According to Davis (2021), real-life or world situations play a crucial role in

education. Content is simpler to comprehend and enjoy when it is taught and applied in real-

life situations. The learners can easily understood the lesson if they can relate a real-life

issue with their prior knowledge. Also, it is one of the effective strategy to learn and also a
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 30

teaching strategy. Real-life examples highlight the complexities and unpredictability of real-

world events, which can help to encourage critical thinking.

Moreover, an article posted by Wasabi Learning in 2020 introduced different learning

strategies that can be used by students who do not enjoy studying. The main strategy is

linked to the real world which explains that real world application is important to digital

people as they wanted to know how they can apply the teaching in the actual world.

Students want to know how it will help them outside of the school. This is most likely one of

the most significant perspective of a teacher that must be share with his students.

Howie (2011) said that there are different theories of learning styles; some are more

personality or motivation driven, and some are more 'educationally based. It focused

primarily on balancing the style of instruction with individual expectations for learning. The

preference for learning styles is said to be affected by a variety of variables, some of which

have a greater impact than others on certain learners or at certain times. In addition of

example, when Ramayah et al. (2011) Examined the impact of peer, technology, cultural

context of the school students' learning style, they found that all four forms of learning style

were influenced by peer, reading and writing were affected by technology, while the

learner's cultural background affected the participants' visual, aural and kinesthetic learning

styles.

Dadli (2015) said that in learning, individuals who learn by self-regulated learning set

goals and strive to achieve their goals. Every individual is working on different ways to know

their goals in life. Individuals who monitor their learning in this way typically use internal

motivation rather than external motivation to achieve their goals They have high self-

confidence, and they manage their own learning without an external force, as they are

conscious of the potential they have.

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 31

Moreover, Uyar (2015), learning based on self-regulation includes the following

points and explanations: (a) having a goal-oriented thinking, where in students have a goal,

(b) students learn to take the initiative and work independently to achieve the goal, it simply

means that they are responsible enough for their actions, (c) students have metacognitive

knowledge to recognize the task's required problems, compensate for their own levels to

meet the task's requirements and choose the strategies they can use to accomplish the

task, try to accomplish the task during the process by using different strategies, namely, act

strategically, and (d) having a high motivation at all time.

On the other hand, (Daniela 2015) showed that self-regulation was positively

affected by intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, task importance, management of

learning beliefs, and self-efficacy. This indicates that students who are driven to learn,

consider the subject as important, can monitor their learning, and are more likely than others

to use cognitive and self-regulated strategies with faith in their ability to learn. This can be

due to the fact that optimistic personal motivational values appear to keep learners

responsible for their learning.

Related Studies

In the study by Cabay (2019) concluded that most of the Hotel and Restaurant

Operations/Management students who are involved in employment explained that a working

student must have enough time management skills and abilities in order to be an effective

student as well as part time worker. It also stated the main reason why those students

choose to be a working student, and that is because of the insufficient money that will

sustain their needs in college. However, the study also showed that students who are
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 32

working and studying can have a better opportunities, and they gain more experiences while

they were still in college.

The researchers find it relevant to the study being conducted because it emphasizes

how important to learn time management for every student, particularly for students who

work and study at the same time. This can be a motivation for all the working students to

work hard and study hard as they can benefit from working while studying. This will allow the

student to know that there is an advancement of being a working student that they were

picking up new experiences that will be very useful for them in the future because employers

are looking for employees that have different experiences in working.

In the study by Faizuddin (2018) about the experiences of working while studying of

the postgraduate students at International Islamic showed that the respondents are having a

good attitude and proper time management that helps them to balance their work as they

study. The study also explained what can be a working student and also the consequences

of being a working student. However, students at International Islamic shared how this

experience help them to be more responsible and improved their decisions in lie.

The researches included this study because it emphasize the things that a working

students experiencing while studying and working at the same time. This can serves as

motivation for those working students to strive harder to fulfill their needs, and also it gives

them self-satisfaction once they completed a task on time and also working properly.

Involvement in employment while studying really can be help for students to be able to learn

how to manage their time effectively and also this can give them more opportunities in the

future when they already got in the field of working permanently.

Scherer, Talley, and Fife (2017) found that non cognitive individual behaviors such

as a student’s time point of view are viable indicators of scholastic results as destitute time
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 33

administration approaches mean that students discover it difficult to arrange their work and

may feel unsettled toward the conclusion of a course—when they are likely to be surveyed.

It is true that behaviour of the student will be the basic help and one of the strategies for the

student to cope in this new normal classes because when the behaviour of the student will

be exception in the class, it would be difficult but when they comply on the activities it would

be a great opportunities. It means that strategies will be in the student behaviour if they will

be able to comply on the activities and assessment on time.

In this study, the time management of the student is base on their behavior on what

will effect on their academic performance. As they found what the student behavior will be

the one, who will dictate on how their task will do if it is going to be a great opportunity or a

difficulty on how they use their time. Inclined this to our study time management is very

essential especially on how the student will do if they have a work and they are studying,

how they will act in a particular task to do. This study helps to make the working student

understand that it may start with them on how they will behave. This can be a strategy that

may apply by working students for them to have a better understanding in a particular

lesson. They should always shows good behaviour towards completing task so that they can

comply on time as well as they learned something from doing it.

The study by Frigillano et al. (2015) found out that the respondents’ self-esteem,

academic performance, and time management are not affected even they are on-campus

full time students and also a part-time working student. Involvement in employment make

them happy as they can help and provide for their family and also a good experience for

them to work independently. Their goals to finish studying and to be able to work motivate

them to do more.
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 34

In this study concluded that a full-time student and a part time working students

found that it will not affect their academic performance if they have a good time

management.it also revealed that some of students are working because of financial

problem. Although it is hard it may take an advantage of working students because they will

have experienced. as for in our study it talks about working student even if working or not it

will not affect their academic performance if they know how to do a good time management

and their motivation to do well.

Research by Khan (2015) explained that effective time management of students,

specifically working students is very important for it may affect the student's overall learning

aspects. Globally, time is really the indefinitely usable and divisible commodity and this be

able to apply in everything not just to simply know. Application of time management of

students can be able to make them organized and they may balance their time for studying

and at the same time to job employment.

Khan’s research relates in the study being conducted in terms of how the time

management affects the student's learning process similar to what the researchers want to

assess. It is also on how the student may be able to allocate time for their self obligations in

studying, working and even socializing. Organization of time is really the key in order to be

productive in many aspects and in order to have a balanced time efficacy. Additionally, time

management will make the students to become inexhaustible even the work requires

demand for they may be able to divide their respective time efficiently.

In the study by Obijiaku (2015), international students appeared to be aware how

essential time management is to their academic success. He found out that there are

students who think the same way towards time management, which explains that time

management is where an individual makes schedules and manage their time to be more
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 35

productive and accomplished all the tasks. It is considered as an instrument which let the

students to be more inclined in doing tasks equally and taking control in assuring that all the

tasks are completed.

Studies by Obijiaku says that time management is very essential in students in terms

of studying, especially while working. It similar to the researcher's study in the way that how

the students may be able to take in control of their time to be able to continue the learning

process on time. Moreover, the idea of time management is what the researchers are trying

to study for this is related to the learning strategies the students may obtain. The time

management is very crucial in working students in order to alter in demand of study and

work.

In the study of Harold (2014), through the use of the scientific technic aiming for an

increase of his worker’s productivity, conducting a time and motion studies was a big help in

order to find out how he could maximized the time spent to complete a particular task with a

specific period. It found out that time management is an instrument for increasing the

productivity for all the students who are working and studying at the same time.

Studies presented by Harold mentioned that time management is one of the key in

maximizing being productive, especially the working. In the same process that the

researcher shows the importance of time management and on how the working students

manage their time. Time management is vital to the working students in order to do things in

proper way without wasting time. It found out that time management is an instrument for

increasing the productivity for all the students who are working and studying at the same

time.

According to Kavarana (2013), the number of full time students who are involved in

employment are getting bigger. This also found out that working while studying helps the
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 36

students to reduce their loans and debts. Students sense that they need to control their

selves borrowing and work hard to earn more money allotted for the tuition. Another

advantage in the engagement of students in employment lies within the feeling of self-

achievement and self-satisfaction that is accomplished by challenging oneself with the

workload and different life styles. It is all about how an individual make use of their time in

the best possible way and make the most of it despite of working while studying at the same

time. It is also believed that the abilities of being hard working and the determination in

people are the qualities that every firm must be looking for.

The research conducted by Kavarana is related to the study conducting by the

researchers. In terms of the researcher discovering the reason why the students tends to

work and how will it affect if students go to work while studying. Aside from that, the

research shows the idea of the benefits of working while studying. It is similar to the study of

the researcher in a way why the students tends to work. Lastly, another advantage in the

engagement of students in employment lies within the feeling of self-achievement and self-

satisfaction that is accomplished by challenging oneself with the workload and different

lifestyles.

Moreover, the study of Fazal (2012) reveals that time management skills can be a

high indicators towards reaching a high degree of academic success and performance. It is

not just about how it affects the achievement of an individual, but learning these strategies in

managing time can fulfill every aspects in life through proper time management.

The research by Fazal relates to the researchers study about time management of

the student that show up the implications or the outcomes of time managing to gain

academic successes and performance. It is very important to researcher to include this as

an idea to improves the time management skills of college working student. Aside from that,
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 37

it would be very helpful for the student if they would be able to handle their time

management appropriate as an individual or student. Eventually, time management is the

only way for the student to be more calm and comfortable on doing their task since they

have enough time accordance to their time management.

According to Fleming (2011), there is an effective time management when the

students understand the distinction between efficiency and effectiveness. It is said that

efficiency includes completing a specific task in a right way while effectiveness related to the

tasks to be completed in the first place. Another perspective who explains that the practice

of distinguishing proof of vital errands in a proper way, and the most suitable tools and

strategies for accomplishing those tasks can be considered as the most essential conditions

of successful time management.

Fleming studies actually deals to the researchers study about time management on

how effective or efficient thus the time management to the student. It is basically discuss the

effective time management is closely related on understanding the differences between

efficiency and effectiveness on how student create their time management. Also, it requires

the practice on creating time management for an effective time managing skills If the time

management is appropriate to them. Time management is according to student if they could

be able to gather or control their time if it would be efficient and effective on them. And the

most important things on working student is time managing cause it can change their life as

working student on how they balance both studies and works.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with the methodology of the study. It presents the method and

techniques that will be use, the population and the sample, the data gathering instruments

and procedures, followed by data gathering, and the statistical treatment employ in this

study.

Method of Research

This study would determine the level of time management and the learning strategies

of working college students of Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Santa Maria

Bulacan Campus. This study utilized the mixed methods research design. According to

Aramo-Immonen H. (2013), mixed methods research is an approach to inquiry that

combines or associates both qualitative and quantitative forms. Mixed methods designs

provide researchers, across research disciplines, with a rigorous approach to answering

research questions. Quantitative research is a procedure for gathering and investigating

numerical data, it is used to discover patterns, make predictions, test relationships, and

generalize results to a more extensive population (Bhandari, 2020). On the other hand,

researched by Crossman (2020) explained that qualitative research is designed to reveal

the meaning that informs the action or outcomes that are typically measured by quantitative

research. As a result, qualitative researchers look at the meanings, perceptions, symbols,

and social structures and relationships.

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 39

The researchers used the descriptive research method and phenomenological research

method in conducting the study to know if the working college students have an effective

time management and learning strategies in school while working during the new normal

education. According to Calderon (2012), descriptive research obtains facts about existing

conditions in a phenomenon and describes and interprets revealing conditions or

relationships that exist or do not exist, practices that prevail or do not, beliefs or point of

view, or attitudes that are held or not, processing that is developing. This includes gathering

information that depicts events and after that, organizes, tabulates, delineates, and portrays

the information collection. Additionally, the descriptive method in research aims to

accurately and systematically describe a population or phenomenon. It can answer what,

where, when, and how but not why questions. A descriptive research design can use a wide

variety of methods to investigate one or more variables, and it also observes and measures

the given variable to come up with the analysis. This carefully developed and analyzed to

ensure that the results are valid and reliable (McCombes, 2019). On the other hand,

Creswell (2013), stated that phenomenological research under the qualitative method is an

approach that focuses on its fundamental goal to arrive at a description and explanation of

the nature of particular phenomenon. It gives a deeper understanding of an event, situation,

and experience. The researchers choose the descriptive research method and

phenomenological research method as they believe that this will be the most applicable

method and will show the best result of the study.

Population, Sample Size, and Sampling Technique

The total population of this study composed of one-hundred thirty-four (134) working

students consisting of eighty-nine (89) working college students from Bachelor of Secondary
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 40

Education Major in Mathematics (BSED MT) and Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in

English (BSED EN) and, also forty-five (45) working college students from Bachelor of

Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) who are currently enrolled in Polytechnic

University of the Philippines, Santa Maria Bulacan Campus in the school year 2020-2021.

The researchers used a random sampling technique and purposive sampling

technique to determine the respondents of this study. The random sampling technique is

where every participant in the population will have an equal opportunity to be selected in the

sample size of the study (McCombes, 2019). The researcher also used the purposive

sampling technique to select their respondents based on their judgments. Purposive

sampling technique in which the researchers depend on their selection of respondents in

participating in the study based on their own judgment (Crossman, 2020).

The researchers selected 80 working college students from the Education program

and Hospitality Management program as the sample of this study from the total population

of working college students in Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Santa Maria Bulacan

Campus from 1st – 4th year levels.

Description of Respondents

The respondents of the study consisted of 80 college students of the Polytechnic

University of the Philippines, Santa Maria Bulacan Campus, who are currently enrolled in the

First semester Academic Year 2020-2021. The said students are currently studying and

working at the same time. They were from Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in

Mathematics (BSED MT) and Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English (BSED

EN), from year levels 1st – 4th year and Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management

(BSHM) from year levels 1st – 3rd.

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 41

As for this study, there were different types of students who are working while

studying, some of the students just want to challenge themselves, to try new things in life, to

gain work experiences and also for their future career, to earn money to sustain their

expenses and most of them are working because of financial crisis within their families.

Research Instrument

In order to acquire the desired data of the students, the researchers of this study

used survey questionnaires and interview as the major instrument in gathering information

from the respondents composed of two parts – Likert-scale questionnaire composed of

several factors and the other part is the interview guide questions that served as support

towards the answers of the respondents.

The instrument that was used is a researcher-made questionnaire checklist and a

structured interview to gather information needed to answers of the respondents. Before

preparing the instrument for the research, the researcher gathered information needed in

formulating the instrument from journals, different sites, the published and unpublished

thesis that have similar information about time management and learning strategies of

working students. In this way, the instrument was authorized to obtain a valid response from

the respondent. The researcher used validation tools to validate the efficiency of the

research instrument needed in gathering information. The researchers made a draft of the

questionnaire then they submitted it to five professional teachers for validation and criticism.

The Likert-Scale Questionnaire. The researchers made used of survey

questionnaires in this study which have two categories: the first category will be the time

management skills of working students in terms of prioritizing, scheduling, and goal-setting

and the second category will be for the learning strategies of working students in the new
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 42

normal education. The Likert scale was used in the questionnaire composed of 5- strongly

agree; 4 – agree; 3- neutral; 2- disagree; 1- strongly disagree.

Structured Interview. A structured interview is one that the interviewer presents a

series of predetermined questions to the respondent. In structured interviews, questions are

all prepared and developed in advance, which implies that all respondents are asked the

same questions in the same order. Since all respondents are asked the same questions in

structured formal interviews, it is simple to compare their responses and make a conclusion.

The researchers distributed 80 questionnaires to randomly selected working college

students of Polytechnic University of the Philippines in the school year 2020-2021 to

determine their level of time management and learning strategies in the new normal

education. The researchers were utilized questionnaires and interviews as the instruments

they can use based on their discoveries. The questionnaire has been done through online

with the use of Google forms that must be completed by the respondents amid studies and

the interview guide can be a list of questions that the respondents will be answering to

support their answers.

Data-Gathering Procedure

The researchers conducted a pre-survey to all education students and hospitality

management students from year levels 1 st – 4th year of Polytechnic University of the

Philippines, Santa Maria Bulacan Campus, to know the total population of students who are

studying and working at the same time.

It is the process of collecting information from the respondents by answering the

questionnaires, the researchers undertake on the following activities; first, the researcher

asked the president of every class in all year levels of Education program and Hospitality
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 43

Management program to know the exact number of working students in the class; second,

the researcher asked for the permission of the students to be the respondents of the study

by giving them the letter that indicates that they were participate in gathering the data for the

study; third, the researcher conducted the distribution of questionnaires for the collection of

data that is required for the evaluation through online specifically with the use of Google

forms. The researcher explained to the students what are the purposes of the test and the

importance of giving their objective answers; fourth, the researcher collected, classify and

tabulated the gathered data; fifth, analyzed the data; and the last one is, interpreted the

data.

Statistical Treatment of Data

All the data collected was carefully sorted, tallied, entered and analyzed by the

researchers. In the analysis and interpretation of data, the researchers made used of the

statistical tools which is, the weighted mean to show the summary of the computed

descriptive measure on the time management and learning strategies of the selected

working students.

The formula of the statistical tool that was used in this study is illustrated as:

For the weighted mean:

f (1)+ f (2)+f (3)+ f (4)+f (5)

WM=
N

Where: f = frequency

N = total number of respondents

WM = weighted mean

Overall Weighted Mean 4.13 Agree Effective

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 46

Overall, the data indicated that in terms of prioritizing, the level of time management

of the students is effective. The highest weighted mean of 4.30 means that most of the

students agreed that they can manage their time through completing task according to their

priority. Also, the students agreed that they were focusing on the most important task in a

day that is why it has the second highest weighted mean of 4.26. They also agreed that they

prioritize tasks through giving more time in the most critical task, started with the most

difficult task and they try to avoid being distracted for them to be able to accomplish all the

tasks on time. The overall weighted mean of 4.13 showed that these selected working

students have an effective time management in terms of prioritizing.

The result is actually aligned in the “Theory of Covey Time Management Matrix”

wherein students can possibly manage their time through completing tasks in order of their

priority. It is important for them to know what tasks are important and urgent in order to

accomplish all these things on time. It allows the learner to focus on the task which is more

important and urgent than other tasks. This technique helps every learner especially those

working students to learn how to set priorities for them to be able to complete their task

without rushing their time, give more importance for things that are much needed attention

and knowing what should be put first when juggling time for studying while working.

Overall Weighted Mean 3.52 Agree Effective

Generally, the data indicates that in terms of scheduling, the level of time

management of the students is effective. The highest weighted mean of 3.61 means that

most of the students are agreed that they managing their time by sticking on their schedule

so that they can meet their expected goals. Also, the second highest weighted mean of 3.56

explains that the respondents agreed that they were listing important dates on their calendar

as scheduling as part of their time management. They were also doing a to-do-list to plan

everything that they needed to accomplish in a week or in a day and revise schedule for

examination. The overall weighted mean of 3.52 implies that these working students showed

effective time management just like they have their own calendar of the things they needed

to complete in a week, also they are trying to plan ahead so that they can manage their time

in studying while working.

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 48

The result implies that scheduling is an important factor of time management. Many

of the students are likely to make a schedule for them to plan what needs to accomplish in a

day or in a week. Creating a schedule and sticking with it helps them to be able to arrange

their tasks according to its deadline. According to Kurzawska (2020), time management

refers to arranging and organizing a day in a way that you simply get the foremost out of it,

feel relieved and fulfilled, and at the same time it comes up to best work results. This also

helps them to work flexible as they are following a specific schedule. This will allow the

student especially working student to balance their time when they need to study and work

at the same time. Additionally, Clark (2020) emphasized the importance of daily plan in

every student in an institution which helps the students to achieve their goals in timely

manner and to have a well-organized plan in order to accomplish all the tasks given.

Overall Weighted Mean 3.88 Agree Effective

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 49

Overall, the data indicates that in terms of goal setting, the level of time management

of the students is effective. The highest weighted mean of 4.10 interprets that most of the

students agreed that they used goal setting to decide which tasks are important to them.

The second highest weighted mean of 4.03 explains that the students have to set specific

and well defined objectives for their selves in each session. Also, the students were

managing their time through goal setting in a way that they were familiarizing their selves

using the SMART goals - specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound and by

doing this they can able to meet their desired goals without rushing their time. The overall

weighted mean of 3.88 expresses that these working students can balance their time to

study and work at the same time with the help of goal setting as a result of an effective time

management.

The result shows that Goal setting is a part of the students’ time management that

allows them to be able to meet their goals. According to an article posted by Indeed Editorial

Team (2021), goal setting is the major step to become a good time manager. It allows you to

properly understand your ultimate goal and what exactly you need to prioritize to achieve it.

Setting both short and long-term goals can lead to success in your work. Being a working

student needs to set their goals for them to be able to balance their work as they study at

the same time.

Overall, the data indicates that the working students’ learning strategies in the new

normal education are effective which got the overall weighted mean of 3.89. Majority of the

students were all agreed to the statements above which indicates that they are doing those

strategies that results to have an effective learning strategy when working and studying at

the same time. The highest weighted mean of 4.31 means that most of the students agreed

that it is easier for them to understand a lesson when there are steps to be followed. Also,

the second highest weighted mean of 4.21 explains that the students agreed to jot down

notes for visual review as their learning strategy. The students were also agreed to learn in

a step-by-step process, prefer to see information from a PowerPoint presentation and trying

to find connection on what they learned and what they are learning as it also got high

weighted mean. As the overall weighted mean of 3.89, this implies that these working

students have an effective learning strategy to be used in the new normal education.

III. Lived Experiences of Working Students

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 53

Theme 1: Importance of Time Management

Student 1: “Time management is one of the ways that we can have to avoid

procrastination and can help us to meet the specific goal or tasks ahead of time.”

Student 2: “Time management is important to balance my schedule between

studying and working because it helps me to do my tasks easily.”

Student 3: “Our attention and productivity will improve if you already have good time

management abilities. It also decrease inefficiency and distractions. You may enhance your

performance by taking responsibility for things with smart scheduling. This also makes it

easier for us to do more of your important priorities.”

Student 4: “Effective time management increases my focus and productivity. It

reduced distractions and procrastination.”

Student 5: “To improve myself in terms of arranging my time for my task, it allows

me to strengthen my performance in a specific task and it helps me to achieve my desired

objectives.”

All participants gave their opinion and shared how important time management is in

their life as a working student. Being a working student it is extremely crucial to practice time

management as a way of them to meet their desired goals in both academic and work

responsibilities. They described how helpful it is for them to have a time management in

order for them meet their specific goals as they need to balance their time as a part-time

worker and being a college student. They also added that learning time management will

enhanced their skills in managing their time and also in organizing tasks. It also helps them

to increase their productivity and performance as a working student.

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 54

The result shows the importance time management as a working student. According

to an article posted by JobStreet states that time management is crucial especially to those

students who cram in the morning to lecture, make socialize and study time in a day,

specifically those working students. Students answered that learning how to manage their

time helps them to improve their selves as a student and also being a part-time worker.

Also, Clark (2014) stated that Productivity, adequacy, self-understanding and exact time

utilization are the significance time management

Theme 2: Work-Life Balance

Student 1: “I maintain it by posting my schedule on a calendar and always

updating my "to do list".

Student 2: “I balance my day and time. I have a particular day of my schedule to

study and day to work as working student.”

Student 3. “Set work hours and stick to them. Manage your time in long term. And

most important is to prioritize your health.”

Student 4: “In this time of pandemic, I learn how to manage which one is more

important especially when a certain task requires time and full attention with that, I

prioritize what task needed to be done immediately whether it is for academic or work

responsibility.”

Student 5: “To balance my work and study, I prepare a To-do-list. I have notebook,

inside of it listed my activities in each subjects, they are separated. Then if I’m done with

that activity I just put a check on it. I organize each task systematically from its date of

deadlines.”
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 55

Most of the participants can maintain their work-life balance as they always have

their schedule as a guide for them which tasks should be prioritize in a day or in a week.

Balancing life as a working student seems difficult but knowing how they can manage their

time in achieving their goals in terms of academic and work. They are trying to keep their

selves motivated and inspired as they wanted to finish their study as well as trying to survive

financially in this time of pandemic.

The results exposed that students are really practicing time management through

prioritizing tasks, making schedule and setting goals which is align to the results of the

online survey questionnaire answered by working students. It shows that being a working

student; they still manage to balance their work and study at the same time. The answers of

the selected working students were accurate on the time management in terms of priority,

schedule and goal setting. This shows that there is a time management on them even they

are working student.

Theme 3: Academic Tasks Over Work Responsibilities

Student 1: “Finish my school works first before working. I mostly prioritize my

academic task than my work responsibilities.”

Student 2: “Important to study and do the academic tasks. I manage my time and set

a proper day to work. For me to be sure that my studies can't be affected.”

Student 3: “I make a list of all the tasks I need to accomplish, as well as a list of

everything I might be able to do in a particular day.”

Student 4: “I was able to maintain it by prioritizing my study over my work, I ensure

that I didn't missed any lesson because I always put in my mind that I am working to
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 56

support my study and not to prioritize my work because it will all be wasted if I let my

work be prioritize over my study.”

Student 5: “For me, as a working student, I am more prioritizing my studies right

now rather than my work responsibilities. I make sure that I accomplished my to-do list in

academic aspect without affecting my duty as an employee.”

Working while studying is not easy just like some of the students who are struggling

to balance their time in academic tasks and in work responsibilities. According to Cooper

(2020), juggling work and school, time management can be a challenge. Balancing

professional and academic life is not that simple errand, particularly when there are still

extra obligations for competing time such as working while studying. The selected students

express that being a working students is not an easy one but they make sure they have

enough time to study even they are working in the new normal education.

Most of the working students implied that their academic tasks are more important

than work responsibility which is the reason why they are still prioritizing their study over

work. They still allot more time to study even though they have some works to do. They are

trying to be a good student as well as a good part-time worker in the new normal situation.

Theme 4: Visual Learners

Student 1: “In this current pandemic, I manage to adapt being a visual learner.

Since everything happens online, it helps me to learn if I have a copy of something that I

can read or finds support to in terms of learning.”

Student 2: “I am both a visual and auditory learner. For me to fully understand the

discussion, I need to hear the discussion and at the same time read the text/pdf/ppt on

my mind. I also need to write again what is on the text/pdf/ppt.”

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 57

Student 3: “I learn best when I see the lesson could be of great help in the future. I

learn best when the lesson is presented in a systematic process”.

Student 4: “I am a visual learner in this time of pandemic because as what I have

observed I became more attentive on the lessons I see.”

Student 5: “More of a visual learner. And I tend to avoid work under pressure.”

Most of the participants answered that they are visual learners in this time of

pandemic because of the virtual meetings that they had as an alternative way of teaching

method in today’s situation. They described that it helps them to easily understand a lesson

when they can see it or even read it just like how their instructors present diagrams and

charts in a PowerPoint presentation. In this current situation, they manage to become a

visual learner as the teaching-learning process happens through online or virtual meeting.

The answers of the students implies that working students are mostly visual learners

wherein they can learn best if they can see the lesson and they learn to be a visual learner

in this new normal education.

Theme 5: Note Taking Strategy

Student 1: “I write the lessons to be able to remember it and then review it like

presenting to be able to retain the information.”

Student 2: “The learning strategy that I always apply is to take down notes or

sometimes I will browse every documents and power point in order to understand

everything that I skipped when I have a work.”

Student 3: “Taking notes. For I will have notes to look back in case I forget

something, especially as math major, we need to take notes formulas.”

POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 58

Student 4: “I take notes and review them before going to bed at night to refresh my

memory in all the things I have learn.”

Student 5: “I write notes and make sure to listen well in the discussion.”

Majority of the students answered that they take notes during discussion as their

strategy that helps them to easily learn a lesson and to have a visual review for an

examination. They also added that taking notes can help them to easily remember the

lesson that has been discussed during the discussion. Also, some of the respondents are

math major that is why they said how it is important to have notes for the formulas they

needed to memorize. This showed that mostly of the working students are exhibiting

different strategies in understanding a lesson to have an effective learning during this

new normal education.

Chapter 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter illustrates the presentation of the findings drawn from data interpreted

from chapter 4, gives conclusions based on the findings to answer the research questions

and humbly provide recommendations based on the conclusion and findings of this study.

This study was conducted to know and to determine the level of time management

and the learning strategies of working college students in the new normal education. This

study was limited only to working college students of Polytechnic University of the

Philippines Santa Maria, Bulacan Campus. The researchers used descriptive-survey design

and phenomenological design to help us know the answers to the Wh’s questions like who,

what, when, where, and also how. Also, the researchers constructed survey questionnaire

and structured interview that serves as the research instruments of this study.

Summary of Findings

From analysis of data, the significant findings are as follows:

1. Working college students’ level of time management in terms of prioritizing, schedul-

ing and goal setting.

In terms of prioritizing, the level of students’ time management is effective as

it shows that most of the working college students complete their tasks whether it is

academic tasks or work responsibilities with a weighted mean of 4.30. For

scheduling, the level of students’ time management perceived to be effective in a

way that they stick on their schedule with a weighted mean of 3.61. And lastly,
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 60

regarding to goal setting the level of students’ time management is effective which

means that most of the students agreed that they can manage their time through

setting goals for them to be able to decide which tasks are important wherein it has a

weighted mean of 4.10. As an overall result, this shows that the level of working

college students’ time management is effective wherein they are effectively using

prioritizing, scheduling and goal setting as skills for managing time as they are

working and studying at the same time.

2. Learning strategies used by working college students to cope in the New Normal

Education.

To be able to survives schooling despite of engaging to job, working college

students cope by following steps because it is easier for them to understand a

lesson. Learning process step by step was their effective strategies in order to

survived study amidst pandemic and in the new normal education. The learning

strategies of working students in the new normal education showed that majority of

the students can easily learn a lesson when there are steps to be followed and, also

they prefer to jot down or take notes during discussion for visual review. Overall, the

result implies that most of the working students in the new normal education are

using different strategies for an effective learning.

3. Lived Experiences of Working college students in the new normal education

In the new normal education, working students mostly answer that having a

clearly defined time management help them a lot in terms of meeting their study

goals and increase their productivity and performance in study. In addition,

maintaining a work-life balance is really a must for them in a way that they prioritize

tasks, setting goals and making timetable. They have their schedule to follow to be
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 61

able to remember and organized their tasks without making study unbalanced to the

work itself. In time management, academic task over work responsibilities is not just

easy for some working students. It's difficult for them to manage their work with the

continuous demand in school. Despite this, they still prioritize their study over work.

Also, they added they use visual learning strategies since they can simultaneously

understand a lesson when they see graphics, diagrams and other visual. As for their

learning strategy that they use particularly to learn in the new normal education, most

students were taking notes and lessons for them to easily remember the topic.

Conclusions

Based on above-mentioned findings, the following conclusions are drawn:

1. Majority of the respondents of this study showed how they use time management ef-

fectively in terms of prioritizing, scheduling and goal setting.

2. The respondents demonstrated effective time management despite of being a work-

ing student as they prioritize academic tasks over work responsibilities, maintaining

work life balance through scheduling and setting goals for completion of tasks.

3. The respondents showed how important it is to value time management as it helps

them to be more productive and work independently.

4. The study showed that time management help the respondents to balance their time

from doing the task that they needed to accomplish and they still prioritize academic

tasks than work responsibilities.

5. The respondents exhibited different strategies on how they cope to learn in the new

normal education as they expressed that they effectively learn easily when there are
POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES 62

steps to be followed, when they jot down notes and even relating the learning in the

real life situation.

6. This study answered the assumption wherein the students in the new normal educa-

tion can balance their time as they study and work at the same time which implies

that they have an effective time management and, also they used different strategies

that helps them to easily understand the lesson for an effective learning.

Recommendations

On the basis of the conclusions, the following recommendations are set forth:

1. To all the teachers, it is recommended that they should use different teaching strate-

gies in delivering their lesson to be able to fit in the learning strategies of their stu-

dents, as well as to acknowledge different learning strategies of the students within

the class.

2. As for the University, it is recommended that they should create a program which en-

courages and guides the working students in maintaining an effective time manage-

ment to help them to balance their work while studying.

3. To the future researchers, it is recommended that the current study be reviewed,

evaluated, and even reproduced with a wider range of samples, variables, and differ-

ent surveys and measuring techniques.
