Assignment # 2
Question 1: Explain which transformation matrices have to be applied in which order to
rotate the point (2, 2) on the xy plane by 30 degrees counterclockwise with the point (3, 4)
as the center of rotation. Calculate the coordinates of the rotated point by applying the
transformation matrices obtained to the point (2, 2).
Question 2: Trapezoidal lamina ABCD lies in xy plane and defined with vertices A(6,1),
B(8,1), C(10,4) and D(3,4). The lamina is to be rotated about the z-axis by 90 degree, then
translated along the y-axis with 4 units and finally it is reflected about the xz plane.
Determine the final the vertices of the lamina after applying transformation.
Question 3: For the points P1(1, 1), P2 (3, 1), P3 (4, 2), P4 (2, 3), that defines a 2-D
polygon, develop a single transformation matrix that (a) reflects about the line x = 0, (b)
translates by –1 in both x and y directions, and (c) rotates about the z-axis by 180° Using
the transformations, determine the new position vectors.
Question 4: A plane perpendicular to the XZ
plane is located as shown in figure. Reflect a point
P(5,3,10) about the plane shown in the figure by
deriving each transformation step.
Question 5: A block is shown in the figure, world
coordinate system Ow is attached to one corner of
the bottom face, whereas, model coordinate
system Om lies at one corner of the face of the
block as shown in the figure. A point P(0,50,15) is
in world coordinate system, determine;
i) Mapping matrix for the transformation from
Ow to the Om,
ii) The coordinates of the point P in Om.
iii) Verify the same question in CATIA and
affix its screenshot.

Question 6: A block (40x40x40) is cut as
shown in the figure, coordinate system Ow is
attached to one corner of the face as shown.
Whereas, another coordinate system Om lies at
the corner of cut face as shown in the figure. A
point P(20,0,20) in model coordinate system
lies on the plane xmzm. Determine;
i. Transformation matrix from model
coordinate system Om to the world
coordinate system Ow,
ii. The location of point “P” in world
coordinate system Ow.
iii. Validate the results in CATIA.
Where the model and world coordinate systems
are related as shown in the accompanying
figure.
Question 7: A part is designed with the
triangular face as shown in the figure. A
coordinate system O1 is attached to one corner
of the bottom face. The cut face contains the
vertices A(0,40,40), B(40,40,0), E(40,20,40).
Point D is the mid- point of the line (AB) ̅.
Another coordinate system O2 lies at the middle
of the line between D and E, making an angle of
30 degree with the line (AB) ̅. Determine the
transformation matrix from O1 to O2 coordinate
system, also determine the points location A, B,
C, D and E in O2 coordinate system. Validate
the results in CATIA.
Question 8: A robotic arm is shown in figure,
which contains two coordinate systems, O1 and
O2. If an object contains a point P(6,6) in O2
coordinate system, investigate the location of
point P in O1 coordinate system. Establish the
transformation matrix from O2 to O1 coordinate
system.
