Lab Report m4

The experiment aims to determine how the period of a spring pendulum oscillation is affected by different factors and to calculate the spring constant. Data was collected on the time taken for 10 oscillations of the pendulum with varying mass and deflection. Graphs of period versus mass and period versus deflection showed that period increases with mass but is unaffected by changes in deflection. Analysis of the data using Hooke's law and Newton's second law allows calculating the spring constant. Sources of error include human reaction time and non-ideal oscillations.

Assignment:
To find the factors affecting the period
of oscillation of a spring pendulum and
also determine the spring constant.

Theory:
A spring pendulum is a physical system where a piece of mask is
connected to a spring so that the resulting motion constant
contains elements at a simple pendulum as well as a string.
When a spring is stretched or compressed the force required to
stretch the spring is given by Hooke’s law:

F = -kx
Where F is force, X is the distance the spring is stretched or
compressed, and K is the spring constant. The spring constant
determines the stiffness at the spring and is measured in
Newton/meter. the minus indicates the force points in the
direction opposite to the displacement.

The normal method add analyzing the motion at a mass and a

spring using Newton’s second law leads to a differential equation
which will give the time of oscillation.
However, we can state the result for the period of a mass and a
spring as:

T = 2^π√(m/k)

Discussion:
The equipment is performed in order to find out the factor affecting the
period of oscillation at T at a spring pendulum and also determining the
spring constant K.

Newton second law and Hooke’s law, let us a differential equation,

which gives us the time period at oscillation. Where M is the mass
hanged at the spring constant.

Keeping mass and other factors constant, we measured the time taken
for 10 complete oscillations for a particular deflection which is the
difference between the release point and the equilibrium position at the
hanged mass. we repeated the experiment with different deflections,
averaged the readings, and divided by 10 to get the time period at
oscillation T as shown in Table 1. We plot a graph for T versus L using
our data, which shows a flat line. We can then conclude that time period
is unaffected by changes in deflection.
Table two depicts the data for. At oscillation T as a function at mass M.
In other words, we are investigating the relationship between M and
keeping reflection, spring and other factors fixed, by plotting a graph
against mass.

POSSIBLE SOURCE OF ERROR:

 Reaction time of the observer when starting and stopping the
stopwatch
 Spring permanently stretched during experiment.
 Oscillation was back and forth rather than up and down.

1. PENDULUM:
A pendulum is a body suspended from a fixed point so that it can
swing back and forth under the influence of gravity. The time
interval of a pendulum's complete back-and-forth movement is
constant.

SPRING PENDULUM:
A spring pendulum (also called elastic pendulum or swinging spring) is
a physical system where a piece of mass is connected to a spring so that
the resulting motion contains elements of a simple pendulum as well as
a spring.

OSCILLATION:
Oscillation is defined as the process of repeating variations of any
quantity or measure about its equilibrium value in time. Oscillation can
also be defined as a periodic variation of a matter between two values or
about its central value.

DEFLECTION:
Deflection is a change in a moving object's velocity, hence its trajectory,
as a consequence of contact (collision) with a surface or the influence of
a non-contact force field.

2. The value of K is different for different sets of Data of a spring

because the no 2 springs have the same spring constant.

3. We can get the value of K in the graph by taking the gradient of

two points. The gradient of the graph is the spring constant(K).
RESULTS:

The value of spring constant is ………………………. N/m.

Time period of a spring pendulum depends on the mass suspended as

T∝ √m i.e., greater the mass greater will be the inertia and so lesser will
be the frequency of oscillation and greater will be the time period.
