EDUC 5220: Curriculum Design and Instructional Decision Making

Dr. Manisha Sharma

Assignment 2

Pinar's (1978) piece, he writes, "If this process of transformation continues at its

present rate, the field of curriculum studies will be profoundly different in 20 years than it has

been during the first 50 years of its existence" (p.205). Since Pinar's statement, curriculum

has advanced considerably. Significant advancements in the theory and creation of curricula

have been made over the past 40 years. I'll evaluate these adjustments. A more learner-

cantered approach is being adopted in the curriculum, for instance, and technology, such as

computer literacy, has been introduced. As well as I will address circles about curriculum

theory and development, along with future curriculum theorists.

Curriculum moving towards a more learner-cantered ideology.

The old curriculum is giving way to an idea that puts the learner first in the curriculum.

(Learner-cantered ideology) According to Shiro "learner-cantered supporters focus not only on

the needs of society or the academic disciplines but on the needs and concerns of individuals."

Additionally, the emphasis in education is changing from one that is more learner-centered to

one that is more teacher-cantered. The focus is on developing skills that will support lifelong

learning and independent problem-solving. Two outstanding examples of how the emphasis of

the curriculum has changed to meet the needs of the student are Montessori and the

International Baccalaureate.

The creation of an active learning environment is now one of a teacher's

responsibilities. These pedagogical approaches support the learner-cantered curricular

philosophy. According to Schiro, M. S. (2013), "It is the responsibility of educators to

provide those situations, surroundings carefully, or units of work that will drive growth in

people as they construct meaning (and hence learning and knowledge) for themselves”.

Technology and the impact on curriculum

pg. 2
Assignment 2

In the last fifteen years, technology has quickly changed the educational landscape.

Consequently, the emphasis on the curriculum has changed. Large-scale information access

has been transformed by technology, making formal education accessible and of previously

unheard-of scale on a global scale. Moreover, Technology has the power to transform

education by making teacher creation simpler and encouraging group learning. A new era of

anytime, everywhere education is evolving because to the internet's widespread accessibility

and smart devices. To ensure effective and accessible education for everyone, instructional

designers and educational technology must take advantage of these opportunities. The

development of the curriculum is crucial for providing students with the right lessons and

other activities they need to master the course's core abilities. It supports learners in achieving

their aims and objectives and aids teachers in selecting their teaching strategy. (Desk,

W.,2022)

Are we just talking in circles about curriculum theory and development, or is there

nothing left to talk about?

Theoretical and practical discussions about curriculum development are never

lacking. It is a field that will continue to advance and expand as human civilization does.

Curriculum theorists pay particular attention to how educational goals and objectives are

communicated. The degree of integration between them and the level of development within

the domain are the two most significant sorts of relationships between various pieces of

knowledge. (Scott, D. 2001)

Future curriculum theorist:

we as educator will be in charge of creating curricula that fulfill the demands of

students and society as a future curriculum theorist. The most recent learning and teaching

research, as well as the requirements of the students and the community, must all be taken

into account. For the courses to be successful and current, we will also need to be able to

collaborate with other educators and stakeholders. (Bing. (n.d.). Bing)

In conclusion, the curriculum's methodology and focal point have evolved over the

past 40 years from tools, methodologies, and ideologies to philosophy. However, there is

competition between the many educational visions. Moving away from established views is

clearly indicated.
