IBU CE 308 - Example 2 - Masonry Structures

This document contains an example problem from a Masonry Structures course. It asks students to: 1) Calculate normal stresses at the bottom of a wall given a 5cm deviation from vertical at the top. The answer is -400kPa. 2) Calculate the deviation needed for zero stress at point B. The answer is 4.167cm. The example involves calculating stresses, moments of inertia, and relationships between stresses, moments and geometry of a cantilevered wall.

Example 2

For the wall shown in figure 1, it is necessary to:

1. Calculate the normal stresses at the bottom of the wall if the deviation of the wall from the
vertical is e=5.0 cm at the top of the wall.
2. Calculate the deviation of the wall from the vertical at the top of the wall so that the stresses
at point B is equal to zero.

The thickness of the wall is d=25 cm. Ignore the wall's weight.
