The lesson plan outlines the learning objectives, content standards, materials needed, and step-by-step procedures for the lesson. The procedures include an introduction to review what students know about the moon, modeling and demonstration of the moon's phases, group activities to practice identifying and labeling the phases, and an individual online activity and assignment to apply what was learned. The lesson aims to help students understand the pattern in how the moon's appearance changes and local myths about the moon through observation, discussion, and hands-on modeling of its phases.

Activities
1. Modeling The moon is the only natural satellite of the earth. The moon has no light of its own.
(I Do) Moonlight is sunlight bouncing off the moon’s surface. As the moon orbits the Earth,
the Sun lights up whatever side the moon is facing it.
The moon has “phases” which means it looks a little different to us each night during
its one month orbit to our planet. We describe how the moon looks with terms such as
“ Full Moon”, First Quarter Moon, New Moon and Third Quarter Moon or Last
Quarter Moon.

Let’s have this diagram……..

The diagram shows different positions of the moon around the Earth with reference to
the sun.

Let’s take a closer look…..

New Moon: The Moon is between the Sun and Earth. Only the dark unlit side of the
Moon is facing towards us

First Quarter Moon: The Moon is 90 degrees from the Sun, and exactly half of the
Moon’s surface facing us is lit up.

Full Moon: The moon and the Sun are on opposite sides od Earth, and the side facing
us is completely lit up

Third Quarter Moon: The Moon has completed three quarters of its orbit around the
Earth, and exactly half of its surface facing us is lit up.

Direction: Label the Phases of the Moon

Group Activity: Divide the class into 3 groups. Each group will be given 10 seconds to
finish the activity

Activity Rules:
Get along
Respect others
On task behavior
Use soft voices

Group 1: Draw and color the Phases of Moon

Group 2: label the Phases of Moon

Group 3: Phases of Moon Matching Card

3. Application Online Activity

Direction: Using the laptop the learners will answer the provided online activity. Each
learner will be given 10 seconds to answer.

Call a learner and let it solve the number of days between full moon and new moon.

(You Do)

Generalization:
Now let’s go back, What do you call the changes of the moonlight’s shape as the moon
revolve around the Earth?
What are the phases of the moon?
Why does the moon change its shape?
DIRECTION: Shade the circles to show the different phases of the moon then write
the name of phase of the moon on the blank provided below the circle.

PHASES OF THE MOON

IV. EVALUATION

ASSIGNMENT:
Observe the shape of the moon, then draw the moon’s shape.

Teacher I
New Moon - when the moon's disk is dark (and invisible to us) because the moon is between
the sun and the Earth
Full Moon - when the moon's disk is light because the Earth is between the sun and the
moon
Quarter Moon - (also called half moon) when we can see one half of the moon's disk (this
is one-quarter of the entire moon's surface)
