New Features

FortiAP v5.2.0 has the following new features:


• 802.11ac support (FAP-320C and FAP-221C)
• Split-tunneling and NAT in tunnel-mode SSIDs
• Selective band combinations in 802.11b/g/n and 802.11a/n/ac
• Spectrum analysis on FAP-14C, 28C, 221B, 223B, 320B, 221C and 320C
• Improved DTLS-encryption CAPWAP-data throughput in FAP kernel data path
• Improved multicast and broadcast control
• DFS channels added to FAP-320B-E, FAP-320C-E, FAP-221C-E (European Union)

Supported models

The following models are supported by FortiAP v5.2.0 build 0212:


FAP-11C, FAP-14C, FAP-28C, FAP-112B, FAP-210B, FAP-220B, FAP-221B, FAP-221C,
FAP-222B, FAP-223B, FAP-320B, and FAP-320C

FAP-221C
This model is released on a special branch based off of FortiAP v5.2.0. As such, the output from
the fap-get-status CLI command should read 490 as the build number and the Branch
point field that should read 212. Upgrading the to FortiAP v5.2.0 also upgrades the BIOS to
v04000003 that increases the flash memory size from 9 MB to 32 MB.

Supported upgrade paths for FortiAP v5.2.0

This section lists the supported upgrade paths from the most recent versions of FortiAP to
FortiAP v5.2.0 build 0212.
• FAP v5.0.6/v5.0.7 to FAP v5.2.0

Firmware image checksums

The MD5 checksums for all Fortinet software and firmware releases are available at the
Customer Service & Support portal located at [Link] After logging in,
click on Download > Firmware Image Checksum, enter the image file including the extension,
and select Get Checksum Code.

Upgrading the FortiAP device

The FortiAP device can be upgraded using the Web-based Manager, automatically through the
FortiGate controller, directly using the FortiAP Web-based Manager, or directly using a telnet
connection to the FortiAP device.

FortiAP v5.0.0 or later includes a Web-based Manager. You can backup and restore system
configuration files, edit the FortiAP network configuration, edit the WTP configuration, upgrade
FortiAP firmware, and perform other administrative tasks from the FortiAP Web-based Manager.

Upgrade using the FortiAP Web-based Manager:


1. Change your computer’s IP address to [Link].
2. Launch a web browser and browse to the FortiAP default local IP address
[Link]
3. Login to the FortiAP with username: admin and no password.
4. Browse to System Information > Status, and select Update in the Firmware Version field.
5. In the Firmware Upgrade/Downgrade page, select Browse to locate the firmware image that
you downloaded from the Customer Service & Support portal.
6. Select Update to start the firmware upgrade.
7. Once the upgrade is complete, a pop-up message will be displayed noting that the firmware
update is complete.

Upgrade through the FortiGate controller:
1. Place the FortiAP firmware image on a TFTP server on your computer.
2. From the FortiGate Command Line Interface (CLI), enter the following command:
execute wireless-controller upload-wtp-image tftp <fap-imagename>
<tftp-server-ip>
3. Verify that the image shows what image is uploaded:
execute wireless-controller list-wtp-image
4. Upgrade the FortiAP from the CLI.
Use the all variable to upgrade all FortiAPs, or enter a specific serial number:
execute wireless-controller reset-wtp <all | SN>
5. From the Web-based Manager, verify that all access points are running the new firmware.

Upgrade using a telnet connection:


1. Place the FortiAP firmware image on a TFTP server on your computer.
2. Connect the FortiAP to a separate private switch or hub, or directly connect it to your
computer using a cross-over cable.
3. Change your computer’s IP address to [Link].
4. Telnet to IP address [Link]. This IP address is overwritten if the FortiAP is
connected to a DHCP environment. Ensure that FortiAP is in a private network with no
DHCP server for the static IP address to be accessible.
5. Login to the FortiAP with username: admin and no password.
6. Enter the following CLI command, replacing <tftp-server-ip> with [Link]:
restore <fap-image-name> <tftp-server-ip>

Downgrading to previous firmware versions

FortiAP v5.2.0 does not support downgrading to previous firmware versions.

Web browser support

FortiAP v5.2.0 supports the following web browsers:


• Microsoft Internet Explorer version 9
• Mozilla Firefox version 18
• Google Chrome version 25
Other web browsers may function correctly, but are not supported by Fortinet.

FortiOS support

FortiAP v5.2.0 is supported by FortiOS v5.2.0.

FortiExplorer support

• FAP-11C, 28C, 210B, 220B, 320B, and 320C work with FortiExplorer-iOS v1.0.5.
• FAP-11C and 28C work with FortiExplorer-Windows/MAC v2.4 build 1075

Resolved Issues

The resolved issues listed below do not list every bug that has been corrected with FortiAP
v5.2.0 build 0212. For inquires about a particular bug, please contact Customer Service &
Support.
• Wifi performance drop if clients go into power-saving mode. (229038)
• FortiAP admin password not restored after configuration restore. (243464)
• Fixed a connectivity issue between FGT and FAP. (235188)

Known Issues

The known issues listed below do not include every bug that has been identified with FortiAP
v5.2.0 build 0212. For inquires about a particular bug or to report a bug, please contact
Customer Service & Support.
• In FAP-320C/221C, the 802.11ac Radio 2 cannot support Rogue AP Scan function. (225550)
• 802.11ac firmware may encounter crash in some cases. (227010, 228318 )
• Split-tunneling SSID cannot support VLAN tag. (236312)
