A. LESSON PREVIEW/REVIEW
Introduction
Good morning/afternoon class, welcome to ART 002 Art Appreciation. Our lesson for today
is about nature and functions of arts. At the end of the lesson, you should be able to (1) explain the
nature of arts in your own words and (2) describe the functions of arts. Do you have any idea why
there is a need for day bed that looks like a big sofa and yet can be a bed at night? Very functional
isn't it? Why some designs were so functionally beautiful? Why some pots in the kitchen has to
blend the colors of the cabinets? You can see why beauty is important? It’s so much better if
something or someone looks so good and yet very functional. Today you will be able to have an
idea about functions of arts. Let’s start. Are you ready?
B. MAIN LESSON
Content Notes
Directions: Read and analyze the lecture (content notes so you can answer the questions that follow.
Nature of art.
Art is a creative activity that expresses imaginative or technical skill. It produces a product, an
object. The product of art is called a work of art. It includes drawing, painting, sculpting,
photography, performance art, dance, music, poetry, prose and theatre.
1. Personal Function
Arts are vehicles for the artists’ expression of their feelings and ideas. The art also serve
as means of expression for us. The therapeutic value of art cannot be ignored. The works
of art makes us aware of other ways of thinking, feeling, and imagining that have never
occurred to us before. Art may also serve the personal function of controlling its viewers,
much like social art. It can also perform religious service or acknowledgment.
2. Social Function
One cannot conceive of a society without art, for art is closely related to every aspect of
social life. Arts perform a social function when: (1) It influences social behavior, (2) It seeks
or tends to influence the collective behavior of a people. (3) When it addresses aspects of
(collective) life as opposed to one person's point of view or experience. Viewers can often
relate in some way to social art and are sometimes even influenced by it to enforce and
enhance the shared sense of identity of those in family, community, or civilization (this
includes festive occasions, parades, dances, uniforms, holidays and events).
3. Spiritual Functions
The designs of religious structures tells so many things about the culture of the faithful.
The same is true for the hymns used in worship services, and the religious plays that
dramatized or depicting the crucifixion and death of Christ and the time His Resurrection.
Same is true with the portraits of the Saints and religious personalities– to express spiritual
beliefs about the destiny of life controlled by the force of a higher power.
4. Educational Function
Art comes to be regarded as 'time off for good behavior' or as 'therapy'" and how the ease
and carefreeness of the arts are supposed to bring joy and a sense of calmness." Arts-
related activities are important for so much more than just keeping your child busy or
relaxed. They’ve been proven to boost a child’s self-image. The self-esteem, confidence
and pride that comes from art in education is truly incredible and every child should
experience that.
5. Political Functions
One function of sculpture and painting is the commemoration of important personages in
society. The statues of national heroes that grace our parks and plazas are
commemorative works as are the commissioned paintings of leaders or rulers. Often they
serve to record important historical events, or reveal the ideals of heroism and leadership
that the community would want the young to emulate.
6. Physical Function. The physical functions of art are often the easiest to understand.
Works of art that are created to perform some service such as tools and containers are
objects which make our lives physically comfortable. Works of art that are created to
perform some service have physical functions like vases, benches, chairs, etc.
