Water is essential for life. It interconnects the lithosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere through the water cycle. However, only a small percentage of the world's water is accessible as freshwater for human use. In many countries, water demand exceeds supply due to factors like low rainfall and overpopulation. This causes water scarcity, affecting millions including girls in places like Africa who spend hours each day fetching water, preventing their access to education. Water scarcity is especially prevalent in parts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. While water is a renewable resource through the water cycle, proper management is needed to ensure access to clean water worldwide.

(2.6) How does the hydrosphere provide natural

resources?
(2.7) Why is the world so dependent on oil resources?
1. Why is water so important to us?
Water is important to us because we need to drink water,
and also some fish and whale live in water if there no water so
fish and whale can’t live. Without water I think there is no
rain also it will be very hot. Also without water there will be
less oxygen cuz they produce oxygen more than tree .Without
water every animals and human can’t survive.

2. What is the water cycle?

The cycle of processes by which water circulates between
the Earth’s oceans, atmosphere, and land, involving
precipitation as rain and snow, drainage in streams and rivers,
and turn to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration.

3. Write a paragraph to explain how water interconnects the

lithosphere, biosphere and atmosphere.
(50 words)

1
4. Look carefully at Diagram B. You have learnt that 71 per
cent of the world is covered in water and yet only 0.01 per
cent of the world’s water is easily accessible freshwater.
Use diagram to help you write five sentences to explain this
fact.
1. 97.5% of all water is salt water in seas and oceans.
2. The remaining 2.5% of water is fresh water, 79% of this
is locked as a solid in glaciers, a further 20% is
underground in the lithosphere stored as groundwater.
3. Only 1% of fresh water remains, 52% of this is stored in
lakes and 1% in rivers, 38% is in soil.
4. 1% of this freshwater is in living organisms, and 8% as
water vapor in the atmosphere.
5. Only just over half of the 1% of the Earth’s fresh water is
easily available for people to use.

5. (a) What is water scarcity?

Water scarcity is a lack of water resources available to meet
the damands of water use in an area.

2
(b) List the reasons why, in many countries in the world,
water demand exceeds supply.
Low rainfall, too many people, overuse of existing water,
plenty of water but lack of access due to limited use of
technology, e.g. pumps to bring groundwater to surface.

6. Look carefully at D and E.

(a) Describe what life is like for girls like Aysha.
Girl have to bring water from the river or lake from so many
mile away from their places and it take 8 hours. Also they can
get sick and ill cuz of dirty water.

(b) How much time a day is spent finding water?

8 hours

(c) How does this affect access to education for girls in these
countries?

3
They didn’t get to attend any school and they will be dumb.
But they have to bring water instense of learning

7. Use an atlas or the internet to research water scarcity.

(a) Which parts of the world have water scarcity?
They are Papua New guinea, Uganda, Ethiopia, The
Democractic Republic of the Congo and Somalia and Eritrea

(b) Which parts of the world do not have water scarcity?

USA, US, Canada, European Countries

8. Do you think water is a renewable or non-renewable

natural resource? Justify your choice.
Water is renewable because it can rain back and get a lot of
water in a day so water is renewable.

9. What are crude oil and natural gas?

Crude oil is oil in its raw state when extracted from the
ground. Natural gas is a naturally occurring hydrocarbon gas
mixture consisting primarily of methane.
