How do I calculate bandwidth and gigabyte consumption?

 (Divide X 8) - First you must convert (divide) your desired stream rate [kilobits per second] by the
number 8 [kilobit to kilobyte conversion factor] to get the number of kilobytes per second.
 (X 60) - multiply your answer by 60 [seconds] to get the kilobytes per minute.
 (X 60) - Multiply this answer by 60 [minutes] to get kilobytes per hour.
 (Divide X 1024) - You then take your kilobytes per hour and divide by 1024 [kilobyte to megabyte
conversion rate] to calculate megabytes per hour.

Audio Scenario example: You intend to stream at 20kbps and want to calculate how many listening
hours one gigabyte would provide.

Audio Formula:

1. Part A: 20kbps / 8 conversion factor X 60 seconds X 60 minutes / 1000 kb = mb/hour

2. part B :1000 megabytes or (1GB) / mb/hour consumed = number of hours for 1 GB

Audio scenario calculation:

1. Part A: (20 / 8 = 2.5) (2.5 X 60 = 150) (150 X 60 = 9000) (9000 / 1000 = 9 mb/hour)
2. part B : (1 Gigabyte or 1000 megabytes / 9mb/hr = 111)

Answer: 1 GB of bandwidth would provide 111 audio listening hours if you streamed at 20kbps.

Video Scenario example: You intend to stream video at 300kbps and want to budget for 50 users each
watching for one hour each day of a 30 day month.

Video Formula:

1. Part A: 300kbps / 8 conversion factor X 60 seconds X 60 minutes / 1000 kb = mb/hour

2. Part B: mb/hour consumed X users X hours/day X days / 1000 megabytes = total GB's of bandwidth
consumed

Video scenario calculation:

1. Part A: (300 / 8 = 37.5) (37.5 X 60 = 2250) (2250 X 60 = 135000) (135000 / 1000 = 135 mb/hour)
2. Part B: (135 X 50 = 6750) (6750 X 1 = 6750) (6750 X 30 = 202500) (202500 / 1000 = 202.5)

Answer: Video streamed at 300kbps watched by 50 clients for one hour each day, for an entire month
would equal 202.5GB's of bandwidth.

Example 1
You transfer 25 Mega Bytes (MB) of data in 2 minutes. What would be the rate of data transmission in
KB/s?

Solution

To get KB/s you must first convert Mega Bytes to Kilo Bytes:

Since a Mega byte is roughly 1000 Kilobytes we will multiply it by 1000. We get 25,000 Kilobytes.

Convert minutes into seconds:

Since a minute is 60 seconds we know that 2 minutes is 120 seconds (2x60=120).

Divide Kilo Bytes by Seconds to get the rate:

25,000/120=208.3. We'll round it too 210. So now we have a rate of 210 KB/s.

Example 2
If you have 15 mb of internet on your cell phone so how would you know that how many minutes are left?

Note: Your phone’s download speed is 256KBPS.

Solution

15MB = 15*1024 KB
(15*1024)/256 = 60 sec =1 min

Example 3
How much bandwidth does Skype use for a 15 minute conversation?

Solution

If you use it for 15 minute, for CALL, you are taking about 15 MB and for Video you are taking up 30 MB of
bandwidth.

Formula: {(number of kb per second needed by skype X seconds used) / 1024 to convert to Mb} / 8 to
convert to MB = Bandwidth used in 1 minute.

/fawadakhtaransari 0332–3076658 0332–3076658

1. If you are only using Voice call, Minimum is 30kbps, Means for 1 Min of CALL only, you will use:

30X60 Kb = 1800 kb = 1.76 Mb = 0.22 MB

However, if your line is good and skype use the recommended settings, then it is 100 kbps. So it will take
{(100 X 60)/1024}/8 = 0.74 MB

So, for 1 minute CALL only, you will take 0.3 to 0.8 MB of bandwidth.

2. Now If you are using video, using the same method:

Minimum is 128 kbps. So, {{128*60)/1024}/8=0.94 MB
Recommended is 300 kbps, So {(300*60)/1024}/8= 2.2 MB

So, for 1 minute of VIDEO CALL you will consume 1 MB to 2.2 MB of Bandwidth

Example 4
How many minutes will take to transmit 15 mb of data?

Note: Your phone’s download speed is 56bps.

Solution

One byte is 8 bits.

Your file is 15,000,000 bytes.

Multiply that by 8 to get the bits. That's 120,000,000 bits.

120,000,000/56,000/60(mins).

It would take 35 minutes.
