Introduction To ACS880

The document summarizes a webinar on ACS880 drives held on November 10, 2021. It included an introduction to drives and benefits of variable frequency drives such as energy savings. The webinar covered key components of AC drives including rectifiers, DC intermediate circuits, and inverters. Rectifiers can use diodes, thyristors, or IGBTs to convert AC power to DC for the intermediate circuit. The intermediate circuit stores energy and provides reactive power to the motor.

INTRODUCTION TO DRIVES

What is a variable frequency drive?
A variable frequency drive (VFD) is a type of motor controller that drives an electric motor by varying the
frequency and voltage of its power supply. The VFD also has the capacity to control ramp-up and ramp-
down of the motor during start or stop

Benefits variable frequency drive

➢ Save energy and improve system efficiency

➢ Match the speed of the drive to the process requirements
➢ Match the torque or power of a drive to the process requirements
Improve the working environment
Lower noise levels, for example from fans and pumps
➢ Reduce mechanical stress on machines to extend their lifetime

Definition of AC drive and AC drive system

AC drive
– Electrical supply device also known as frequency converter
– Used to control speed, torque or position of an AC motor
AC drive system
– Combination of AC drive and motor
plus transmission system, eg, gear box

With diode rectifier it is not possible to feed braking energy into
supply network. Energy has to be dissipated using braking
chopper and braking resistor connected to DC voltage

With IGBT or thyristor rectifiers the braking energy can be fed to
supply network
