EXPERIMENT 8

SINGLE-PHASE DIODE RECTIFIER

OBJECTIVES
1. To determine the waveforms of the input and output voltages of single-phase uncontrolled half-
wave and full-wave rectifiers for resistive load.
2. To compare the output waveforms of single-phase uncontrolled half-wave and full-wave rectifiers
for resistive load.

LIST OF REQUIREMENTS

Equipment
1. PSIM software

THEORY
A diode can be used as a rectifier. A rectifier circuit converts from AC to DC signal. There are two main
types of rectifier circuits:
i. Half–wave rectifier circuit
ii. Full-wave bridge rectifier circuit

PRE-LAB
1. Draw the symbol of a diode, and label its polarity.
2. What is the most common function of a diode?
3. Today the most common diodes are made from semiconductor materials such as _______ or
_________.
4. What is the function of a rectifier circuit?
PROCEDURE
PART A: SINGLE-PHASE UNCONTROLLED HALF-WAVE DIODE RECTIFIER

Figure 8.3

1. Set-up and construct the circuit as shown in Figure 8.3 in PSIM.

2. Set the parameters as follows:
Table 8.1: Simulation Parameters
Recommended Simulation
Line Voltage,
Resistance (Ω) Control
Vac at f = 50 Hz
Time Step (s) Total Time (s)
240 100 1×10−5 0.05

3. Run the simulation by choosing Run PSIM from the Simulate menu.
4. Choose Run SIMVIEW from the Simulate menu to view the simulation results.
5. Select the available variables to be display in the Data Display Selection dialog box.
6. Record the output waveform (Vin, Vout, Iout) from the simulated results in Figure 8.4.

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS
1. All experimental results and answers must be recorded in the Lab Manual.
2. Show the completed Lab Manual to your instructor at the end of each lab session and get approval
from your instructor.
3. Write a report includes title, results, questions, discussion, conclusion and references.
