Press the Info About button and a window showing further information about ABSEL appears.
The hydraulic selection offers the possibility of selecting the area of application and the product range and a general view of the performance elds is obtained. The required head and ow (duty point) can be determined using the friction loss calculation. By inserting the hydraulic data the pump types possible are selected showing performance curve, technical data, drawing, annual energy costs and motor performance curve. Furthermore the curves can be adapted to the duty point: Either by reducing the impeller diameter or by changing of the operating speed using a frequency control device (see page 12)
The Q-H system curve is determined by the specic duty point (Total Flow and Head and, if applicable Static Head). If the required duty point is not known or if the uid data is different from displayed, a calculation programme can be started by means of the switch Friction loss calculation (see 5, page 20). The selection is determined according to the duty point search area Using the Select button below the automatic search for the characteristic elds will start up. With the specied search area the valid range of the family curves will be checked. If the search is successful then the product information dialog will follow. Otherwise you will get an overview of all pumps of the selected series in the duty chart view. Change the search area or the duty point for a new selection.
Insert the data for Flow, Head, and Static Head > a calculation programme can be started by means of the button Friction loss calculation (see 5, page 20). Select search area Percentage = Variation in Flow and Head can be entered in per cent values. Absolute = Variation in Flow and Head can be entered in absolute values.
Select search options: open list box (see arrow) and select the option. Select nature of the system. Click the Select button.
4 5
Note that the selection is limited to the product range(s) marked in the application area above.
By moving the mouse cursor in the performance eld area the relevant data of the active performance curve is shown. All pumps which are capable of meeting the criteria specied in dialogue operation data are listed in the list box. Additional information regarding the selected pump can be obtained from the data cards (see arrow). The display options can be changed using the checkboxes or the popup menu (right mouse button). The Q (H) curves of all listed pumps will be displayed if Display family curve is marked. For the selected pump the characteristic eld will be highlighted.

The buttons on the left side can be used for getting a quick access to the main functions. A hint will be shown for each button when you will move the cursor over that. Sort pump list Motor Duty point Performance curve Calculated curves Multiple speed curves Comment Add another pump Delete added pump Rating of uid Copy Insert Printing Option panel Click with right mouse button up to the list for getting a menu with sort criterions. The price index shows the relation of the purchase prices for selected alternative products. 1.0000 indicates the cheapest solution (purchase price) 1.7850 e.g. means that this purchase price is approx. 78.5 % higher. Price index 0.0000 = on request The price index is depending on hydraulic/motor combination. The Energy cost settings offer the possibility to calculate the annual energy costs of the marked pump type. The parameters for the energy cost settings can be altered in the Option panel from the main window (see 10, page 28).

5.2.2 Elbows
The register card Elbows is used to obtain all frictional losses through pipe bends and elbows. The friction loss through pipe bends and elbows are generally viewed as the sum of straight frictional and deectional losses. The portion attributed to the friction losses is determined as for straight pipe runs. The portion attributed to deectional losses depends on the deecting angle, the radius of the bend, the interior surface roughness and additionally on the Reynolds number.
5.2.3 Transitions
The register card Transitions is used to obtain all frictional losses through pipe reducing and enlarging pieces based on the friction loss coefcients stored in the tting chart. Reducing and enlarging pieces are distinguished by two groups, such with conical and such with sudden transformations between the two pipe sizes. Reference diameter is always the size at the entry to the transformation piece. If a friction loss coefcient is shown to be zero the friction head will be determined directly as a function of Hv(Q). Non registered ttings can be additionally entered into the register card Other ttings.

Basics
PSD allows you to quickly and efciently design a pump sump with AFP, AFL or VUP pumps. The software will create an initial design based on the design information you enter, and will then allow you to modify the design to suit individual requirements. The software is ordered in a logical sequence: 1. 2. 3. 4. Startup screen Data entry screen Design screen Output / report generation screen
Getting started
Standard AFP design The rst step is to carry out a hydraulic analysis of the system using ABSEL. This analysis should provide you with the duty ows for the pumps in your sump. Depending on the system, each duty pump may have a different duty ow or the same duty ow. Once you know the pump models and duty ows, start PSD and click on New Design The screen moves to the Data Entry Screen Set the number of duty pumps and the pumps series/model (by clicking on Change Pump Model) In each of the boxes, enter the duty ow for the individual pumps If you will have a stand-by pump, ensure this option is checked. The default setting includes a stand-by pump which can be deselected. Set the desired conguration (high/low inlet pipe) and the inlet pipe invert level (if applicable) and its' diameter (if known)
