Pump Sump Design Software ABSCAD

1 Introducing ABSEL Product Selection Programme

With ABSEL - the ABS Pump Selection Programme - there is a software system, for easy and quick selection of pumps from the ABS catalogue and for printout of documentation (technical data sheets, characteristic curves, dimension drawings). The selection of a suitable pump can be done by direct selection in the product selection browser or by hydraulic selection via the duty point. There are the options of calculating the characteristic curves for serial and parallel operation. The software supports the analysis and the display of all common types of characteristics family curves. For the duty point adaption of curves there are different methods applied, e. g. reducing the impeller diameter and changing of the operating speed using a frequency control device. Apart from this all statements of curve correction for high viscosity NEWTONian uids in accordance with the Hydraulic Institute Cleveland can be used.

Press the Help button and an online helping function is activated.

The hydraulic selection offers the possibility of selecting the area of application and the product range and a general view of the performance elds is obtained. The required head and ow (duty point) can be determined using the friction loss calculation. By inserting the hydraulic data the pump types possible are selected showing performance curve, technical data, drawing, annual energy costs and motor performance curve. Furthermore the curves can be adapted to the duty point: Either by reducing the impeller diameter or by changing of the operating speed using a frequency control device (see page 12)

4.1 Application area

The hydraulic selection is used to determine the most suitable pump to meet the specied duty point and additional selection parameters. Double-click on the different areas of applications and there are the following classications: Building services Submersible pumps Dewatering pumps Small submersible pumps Lifting stations Circulators Freshwater pumps Water and wastewater Large submersible pumps Small submersible pumps Dry installed pumps Propeller pumps Dewatering pumps By selecting the different areas of application the available product ranges are shown in the list box on the right. Select product range(s). Select multiple ranges by holding down Ctrl and click on range. Click on "Performance" button (see arrow) or return key. Now the duty chart view apppears: Click on the pump in the list box and the relevant performance eld is indicated in a different colour.

Alternatively the performance eld can be shown as a logarithmic diagram

Variation in Head and Flow Calculated Duty Point

The Q-H system curve is determined by the specic duty point (Total Flow and Head and, if applicable Static Head). If the required duty point is not known or if the uid data is different from displayed, a calculation programme can be started by means of the switch Friction loss calculation (see 5, page 20). The selection is determined according to the duty point search area Using the Select button below the automatic search for the characteristic elds will start up. With the specied search area the valid range of the family curves will be checked. If the search is successful then the product information dialog will follow. Otherwise you will get an overview of all pumps of the selected series in the duty chart view. Change the search area or the duty point for a new selection.

4.2 Hydraulic data (Duty point)

Insert the data for Flow, Head, and Static Head > a calculation programme can be started by means of the button Friction loss calculation (see 5, page 20). Select search area Percentage = Variation in Flow and Head can be entered in per cent values. Absolute = Variation in Flow and Head can be entered in absolute values.

5 Friction loss calculation

ABS Pipe calculation is a pipe sizing software for MS-Windows which has been specially developed for the duty point determination (set value) in branchless pipe systems. The software enables the determination of the required pump capacity for drainage water and sewer displacement and for water supply systems in accordance with EN 12056. With known owrate requirements it allows the determination of the total friction losses in the pipe systems as the sum of all partial friction losses in straight pipe runs, valves, ttings and outlet losses.

the individual friction losses in the status line correspond to the different data sheets.

Explanation of the different data sheets 5.2.1 Pipe length

The register card Pipe length contains all friction losses in straight pipe runs. This requires rst to determine total pipe lenghts of equally-sized pipe sections by referring to the piping diagram. Pipe size If the required ow has already been established the mean ow velocity for the respective pipe size will immediately be displayed. Interior surface roughness of pipes The pipe roughness value is given according to the selected pipe material. This value generally represents the upper limit for the specied material. A more exact calculation requires the value input according to manufacturers references. If the exact value is however not known the standard values given for commercially available pipes will generally be sufciently accurate for the friction loss calculation. The generally used roughness value for pipes used for drainage and wastewater disposal is 0.25 mm (ATV A 116,3.6.2).

22

5.2.2 Elbows
The register card Elbows is used to obtain all frictional losses through pipe bends and elbows. The friction loss through pipe bends and elbows are generally viewed as the sum of straight frictional and deectional losses. The portion attributed to the friction losses is determined as for straight pipe runs. The portion attributed to deectional losses depends on the deecting angle, the radius of the bend, the interior surface roughness and additionally on the Reynolds number.

5.2.3 Transitions
The register card Transitions is used to obtain all frictional losses through pipe reducing and enlarging pieces based on the friction loss coefcients stored in the tting chart. Reducing and enlarging pieces are distinguished by two groups, such with conical and such with sudden transformations between the two pipe sizes. Reference diameter is always the size at the entry to the transformation piece. If a friction loss coefcient is shown to be zero the friction head will be determined directly as a function of Hv(Q). Non registered ttings can be additionally entered into the register card Other ttings.

5.2.4 Isolating valves

The register card Isolating valves is used to obtain all frictional losses through isolating devices based on the friction loss coefcients stored in the tting chart. If a friction loss coefcient is shown to be zero the friction head is determined directly as a function of Hv (Q). Non registered ttings can be additionally added under the register card Other ttings.

5.2.5 Non-return valves

The register card Non-return valves is used to obtain all frictional losses through check valves and non-return devices based on the friction loss coefcients stored in the tting chart. If a friction loss coefcient is shown to be zero the friction head is determined directly as a function of Hv (Q). Non registered ttings can be complementarily added under the register card Other ttings.

23

5.2.6 Other ttings

The register card Other ttings covers all user-dened frictional losses.

5.2.7 Sundry head losses

The register card Sundry head losses can be used to make allowance in the calculation for outlet losses as well as losses originating from pipe joints. Please note that there are no outlet losses in closed circulating systems. In open displacement systems they can generally be neglected. Losses due to pipe joints take into account that the determination of friction loss coefcients for valves and ttings are based on laboratory tests where a much higher installation quality can be expected than those normally found on site. Additions to loss coefcients due to the lower quality pipe joints are thus not taken into account. In calculating the friction losses you must take into account not only the valves and other pipework to be used but also the number of pipe ttings (e.g. anges, sockets and spigot joints as well as welded joints) used. It is assumed that all the pipework, valves and ancilliary ttings have a downstream inuence of approx. 4 diameter sizes. If the pipe friction loss calculation is complete, press the OK button and the data will be transferred automatically, (for further steps, see 4.2, page 9).
