Operation & Maintenance Manual Gate Valves
Operation & Maintenance Manual Gate Valves
Manual
HAWLE Gate Valves
♦ The HAWLE Gate Valves are resilient seated (rubber vulcanised wedge) and can be either
manually operated by a hand wheel, by an extension spindle and/or via a spindle cap or
automatically by an electric actuator.
♦ The standard application is for potable water and service water (max. chlorine content 6
mg/l) and for municipal sewage. These Valves can also be used in irrigation. Further Hawle
Gate Valves can be adapted for the use in gas, crude oil, diesel fuel and kerosene
pipelines.
♦ For the case that due to some unforeseeable reasons damages on the spindle or on the
wedge or on the wedge nut occur, the following instructions should be considered:
♦ The spindle sealing is effected by O-rings which are placed in non-corrosive material and
additionally by a back seal. This system generally is maintenance free.
♦ For the case that due to extensive operation the O-ring spindle sealing is damaged, the O-
rings can be changed during operation. The following instructions should be considered:
1. Open the Gate Valve completely (turn the spindle until the wedge is up in the bonnet)
2. Remove the wiper ring (11)
3. Remove the wax (green in below picture) with a screw driver
4. Remove the Circlip (10)
5. Turn the O ring bush (7) out of the bonnet by using a hexagonal nut wrench
6. Replace the 3 O ring seals (8) by new ones
7. Turn the O ring bush (7) back into the bonnet
8. Mount the Circlip (10)
9. Cover the O ring bush and Circlip with wax or a Silicon
10. Mount the wiper ring (11)
11. Operate the Gate Valve (some turns in direction closed and open)
This instruction is for replacing the O ring seals under pressure of the line or without pressure.
During this procedure no leakage will occur even under pressure of the line as the back seal (9)
prevents any leakage.
Note: The numbers in brackets are the part numbers as shown on the relevant catalogue page.
1. The valves must be properly transported. When the valves are loaded or handled by means
of hoists they may be fixed only at the flanges or the eye bolts provided for this purpose. The
valve spindles are equipped with a vertical female thread for mounting of an eye bolt for
transportation.
2. Prior to installation the valve must be checked for damage of coating. Any damage has to
be mended professionally by means of Hawle repair paint (No. 3441).
3. The fittings are not UV resistant by standard. If the fittings are exposed to UV radiation an
appropriate protective coating must be applied. If special coating is required this has to be
specified on the order.
4. Fittings may be installed only in the pipes provided for them according to the specifications
given in the product catalogues or under www.hawle.com.
5. Prior to start-up the valve has to be tested for tightness of connections according to the
pertinent guidelines.
7. For operation of the valves only tools and drives of our range of products or products of
equal standard and according to our specifications may be used. The operating and closing
moments are in compliance with EN.
8. Hawle fittings are designed for maintenance-free operation. The fittings, if not stated
otherwise, must be actuated within a specified time period (no longer than 4 years) at least
once. In case of fittings with automatic drive the pertinent operating and working instructions
must be observed.
