GENERAL AGRICULTURE
Agriculture
➢ The term Agriculture is derived from two Latin words ager or agri meaning soil and
cultura meaning cultivation.
➢ Agriculture is an applied science which encompasses all aspects of crop production
including horticulture, livestock rearing, fisheries, forestry, etc.
➢ Agriculture is defined as an art, science and business of producing crops and
livestock for economic purposes.
➢ As an art it embraces knowledge of the way to perform the operations of the farm in a
skillful manner.
➢ As a science: utilizes all technologies developed on scientific principles such as crop
breeding, production techniques, crop protection, economics etc. to maximize the
yield and profit.
➢ As the business: agriculture as a business aims at maximum net return through the
management of land labour, water and capital, employing the knowledge of various
sciences for production of food, feed, fibre and fuel.

1935 Directorate of Marketing and Inspection(DMI) was established to implement

1957 All India Coordinated Maize Improvement Project was initiated (First
coordinated project) to exploit maize research (Specifically heterosis)
1958 National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India

1965 Food Corporation of India was established
1965 The National Dairy Development Board was established at Anand, Gujarat

➢ Main objective of RRBs: Provision of credit and other facilities, especially to small
and marginal farmers, agricultural labourers, artisans and small entrepreneurs in
rural areas.
➢ Owen ship: RRB were owned by central Govt., State Govt. And Sponsor bank have
the power of managerial and operational supervision by NABARD.
➢ The share capital of RRBs was subscribed by Central Govt. State Govt. and
sponsored bank; and share of each agencies were 50%, 15% and 35% respectively.
➢ As per the RRB bills 2014 the authorised capital of RRBs has been raised from 5
crore to 2000 crore
➢ RRBs in India classified in Scheduled commercial bank
➢ Amalgamation: RRBs periodically go through a process of amalgamation. In 31
March 2016, there were 56 RRBs, covering 525 districts with a network of 14,494
branches. As of 1 April 2020, there are 43 RRBs in India.

seeds, fertilizers and notified commodities for individuals,
co-operatives and other institutions.
3. To act as an agent of the govt. for purchase, sale, storage and
distribution of the above commodities.
4. To arrange facilities for the transport of above commodities.
5. To subscribe to the share capital of SWC.
