LEARNING OBJECTIVE By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
1. Contrast the use of the past simple and the past continuous.
2. Ask and answer questions about an emergency
3. Read a quiz about historical events.
ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Teacher writes hit, say, lie, sit, put, come, hope, run, die have on the
board. Put students into pairs to write –ing form of the verds
without referring to the spelling rules on page 39. Invite students
to the board to write the answers.
LESSON DELIVERY Activity 1(SB page 35)
1. Students look at the table and complete the rules with
when and while. Students compare answers in pairs.
Teacher checks answers as a class. Teacher highlights the
use of when with the past simple( the single action) and
while with the past continuous (the action in progress)
Activity 2(SB page 35)
1. Students work individually to write full sentences from
the prompts. Students compare answers in pairs.Teacher
checks answers as class.
Activity 3( SB page 35)
1. Students complete the email individually. They compare
answers in pairs. Teacher check answers as a class.
Activity 4(SB page 35)
1. Students work in pairs and ask and answer questions
about an emergency they have experienced. Teacher
listens to their ideas as a class.
Activity 5 (SB page 35)
1. This activity gives students more practice in the difference
between the past continuous and the past simple and also
practices adverbs. Teacher asks students to read the
whole text before they choose the correct words and
answer the questions.
2. Students work individually to complete the exercise. They
compare answers in pairs.

ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON Teacher revises some of the weather vocabulary from the first
lesson in this unit. Teacher writes blizzard, thunder, lightning,
foggy, stormy, heat wave on the board with the letters in the wrong
order. Students work in pairs and write the words with the correct
spelling.
LESSON DELIVERY Activity 1(SB page 36)
1. Teacher highlights Lucy’s speech bubble. Teacher elicits
answers to the question from the class. Students read the
headlines carefully. Teacher makes sure they understand
unlucky. Students read the short articles and match them
with the headlines.They compare answers in pairs.

copy the questions and phrase in the box in their

the class. Students raise their hand if another pairs has the
same news story as the news story they have chosen.
