INTRODUCTION.
Designed for interfacing a VDR to....
• Fire Alarms
• Fire Doors
• Watertight Doors
• Engine Alarms, Steering Gear Pump Alarms etc.
• Mandatory Alarms
• On/Off status switches

Typically these systems have a switch, an indicator panel, and a junction box where an on/off voltage
may be intercepted. Express permission should be given by the master before connecting to any
ship's safety system.

The interface does not provide the door's switches or the wiring to any alarm panel. The interface
does not care what it connects to. All it needs is a voltage to be on or off, and it reports it as a "0" or a
"1". The interfaces may be installed close to the switch junction boxes. AMI believe numerous
interfaces, near the sources being monitored, are preferable to the running of many long cables to a
central interface in the VDR.

The interface outputs the standard $IIXDR NMEA 0183 or IEC 61162 sentence for a switch
transducer. Interfaces may be connected in series using a 4-pair cable so that all data finally appears
at the VDR on one data channel. It is a daisy chain rather than an octopus. VDRs will record the XDR
message, which is just what is necessary to provide information in the event of an incident.

INSTALLATION
LOCATION OF INTERFACES
The interfaces are best sited close to, or inside, the equipment they are connecting to, so as to
minimise the wiring connected to the (example, fire alarm) sensors or switches.

CHANNEL INPUT CABLES

They must be suitable for the voltage used, especially for the channel inputs. The current taken is
milliamps, therefore thin-cored cable is very suitable.

DATA CABLES
The KW932 is designed to be inter-connected using 4-pair screened 24 awg LAN cable (Cat 5, 6)
terminated with IDC connectors.

CALCULATING VOLTAGE DROP ON THE INTERCONNECTION CABLE

When numerous KW935s are installed with a long cable run you will need to use ohms law to
calculate the
voltage drop on the cables. This is not necessary on a typical installation when up to 8 interfaces are
daisy-chained on a cable length of 200 metres.

• The KW932 takes about 40 mA.

• The cable has two pairs for the power, typically 9.5 ohms/100m/conductor.
• Use a value of 10 ohms per 100 metres cable run.
• If the voltage falls below 18 volts a separate power cable will have to be run, or use a 6 or 8
core cable with the extra cores carrying the power.
• Example, 4 interfaces at the end of 200 metres drop 1.6 volts, so it is quite OK run from a
standard 26.4 volt power source.

CONNECTIONS
SK10: 24 volts DC supply from and data to the VDR or to the first interface in the chain
SK9: Data from and power to the next interface.
SK1 to SK8: Input channel voltages. (Common +/- and 4 channels)

CONNECTING TO THE SWITCHES OR SENSORS

• Voltage low state must be near zero.
• Voltage high state 5 to 220 volts
• DC, or 50/60 Hz AC.
• Use suitably rated cable. CAT 5 cable is fine for 24v systems.

CALCULATING THE RESISTORS R1 to R32

Select a resistor to pass 2 to 10 mA per channel and fit them in place on the PCB.
Here are typical values:

• 4v to10v 1K 1 watt
• 8v to 32v 3K3 1 watt
• 24v to 90v 12K 3 watt
• 70v to 240v 33K 3 watt

INSERTING THE RESISTORS

Use low residue solder. They can be soldered from the top side of the board, but are better done from
below. If you have to remove a resistor cut it out and remove each lead individually, which reduces
the chance of damaging the PCB tracks and pads. The PCB is worth more than a resistor.

SETTING JUMPER J3
• Normal operation J3 = 0.
• For obtaining special purpose output with programs CH32B2 onwards J3 = 1.
• CH32B1 special output allow two 3-wire DC telegraph system as found on MV Serenade to be output.
The make of the telegraph is not known at this time but it has about 20v DC applied to a rotary
transmitter. Three wires labelled “4, 5 and 6” provide an output. The output is similar to that of an M-type
gyro transmission.

INTERFACING 3-WIRE TELEGRAPH TRANSMISSION

Here is the method worked out for MV Serenade, and applied to the KW932C (not B) interface.
• Identify the 3 output wires from the transmitter, known as 4, 5 and 6 in the information to hand.
• Call them S1, S2, S3 and wire up as shown on the layout diagram that follows.
• R36 R37 pairs are BRIDGED with 10K for a 20v nominal system. Use 15K for 24v.
• R3 and R4 positions are fitted with IN4148 or similar diodes, in opposing directions.
• The interface can accept two 3-wire transmissions, for example port & starboard engine telegraphs.
• The final 2 groups (7 & 8) can be used for any purpose.

SW1, 1 0 1
SW1, 2 0 0

Sentence output $PAMI,TEL,01,11,FA,*HH cr lf $PAMI,TLG,-5,6,AB,*HH cr lf

01 & 11 are two data fields giving position -5 and 6 are the data fields giving position on a
of the transmission on a scale of 1 to 12. scale of –5, through zero to (+) 5. “Stop” occurs
The Serenade “stop” position occurs at 6. at zero. Full astern at –4. Full ahead at 5.

FA is the value of groups 7 & 8 in hex. AB is the value of groups 7 & 8 in hex.

TESTING: Swing the telegraph and note the result at all positions in the ship data file. The transmission is
resolved into 12 values. Not all are used in the case of the Serenade’s telegraph. Should power to the repeaters
fail, or if some impossible or transitory values be found an empty day field is output. The data output occurs when
a change is detected.

If the phasing of a system does not correspond to telegraph position S1, S2, S3 can be changed around until the
most logical output is achieved.

TECHNICAL DETAILS
The microprocessor samples the input channels at a one second rate, and outputs data at a 10
second interval if it is unchanged. If it finds a change in status in any one of the inputs it will output
data at once. This method minimises the amount of data.
Channel inputs are only expected to change infrequently because the KW932 is designed for
interfacing doors switches, fire alarms and the like. It will not detect transient states, such as the quick
pulse of a press-switch. The interface arranges to sample AC, rectified unsmoothed DC, or pure DC.

The pass-through facility allows interfaces to be daisy-chained. It is possible to overload the data
channel if there are rapid changes to the channel inputs. The input and output LEDS will indicate the
data channel load. An absolute maximum of 480 characters per second may be passed but this is far
too many for a practical installation. An overload will not stop an interface working, but some of the
data will be lost.

The proprietary sentence is much smaller than using 8 XDR sentences and is highly recommended. It
is important not to get anywhere like an overload situation or you will also be overloading the VDR.
100 characters per second would be a good compromise.
