Ans-1 : A computer network is an interconnected group of independent computers or devices.
Ans-2 : In a network, a communication channel is used to transfer signals and data.

Ans-4 : A modem is a device that connects a computer system to the Internet using telephone or cable lines. Modem stands
for Modulator-Demodulator. Modulation is the process of converting digital signals of computer to analog signals
(like in telephone) and demodulation is the process of converting analog signals to digital signals.
Ans-5 : Network Interface Card (NIC) is a small piece of hardware device that helps the workstation to be connected to the
network and communicate with other computers. Every NIC provides a unique physical address to the computer
which helps it to be identified in the network.

Part-C : Short Answer Type Questions


Ans-1 : A network helps share hardware resources like printers, modems, etc. Everybody can share the same printer in an
office instead of each user having an independent one. This increases cost effectiveness.
Ans-2 : By sharing hardware devices like printers, scanners, webcames, modems, the need for separate peripheral is avoided
to make it more cost effective. Communicating over a network saves time as the e-mail/message reaches almost
immediately as we send it. E-mails are also much cheaper than using traditional methods like telephones or faxes.
Ans-3 : The advantages and disadvantages of optical cables are :
Advantages
(a) The optic fibre has a much greater bandwidth than the metal wire. This means that they can carry more data.
(b) There is no signal attenuation, so it is used in long distance transmission.
(c) Signals are not affected by interference.
(d) Fibre optic cables are much thinner and lighter than metal wires.
(e) Data can be transmitted digitally.
Disadvantages
(a) It is quite expensive compared to other wired media.
(b) They are more fragile than wire and are difficult to splice(joining two pieces of cable by weaving the strands of
each into the other).

Ans-6 : HTTP : The Hypertext Transfer Protocol is an application-level protocol with the lightness and speed necessary for
distributed,hypermedia information system. The HTTP protocol consists of two distinct items:- the set of requests
from browers to servers and the set of responses going back on the other way.
FTP : FTP is the simplest and most secure way to exchange files over the internet. FTP is most commonly used to
download a file from a server using internet or to upload a file to a server.
Sharing of files from one system to another is encountered with some problems such as two systems have different
directory structure, different file naming conventions . All these problems are solved by FTP.
Ans-7 : Advantages of Wi-Fi : Mobility, Flexibility, Reliability and Speed.
Limitations of Wi-Fi : Interference, High power consumption and limited range.
