Herbs For Mind, Opening Orifices, Moving Liver Qi
Herbs For Mind, Opening Orifices, Moving Liver Qi
Upset shen/mind- anxiety, insomnia, restless leg syndrome, poor concentration, palpitation.
Root: Heat in heart, xu deficiency, blood deficiency
Hun- yang spirit. Protecting us in the daytime. Hun linked to the function of the liver.
Po- yin spirit. Protecting us in the nighttime. Po is linked to the function of the lung.
Yi- need food, warmth, fresh air from Spleen
Zhi- the willpower normally found in the kidney.
Shen- Heart
Emotions- 7 emotions.
ADHD- Problem of the Shen. Shen is residence in the heart. The Shen needs the Hun and the Po
to regulate itself. When there is heat in the heart, or heart deficiency, or heart blood deficiency-
this creates a lot of issues in the Shen.
Also when the pericardium is not working well, the Shen can shut down. When this happens the
person looses consciousness. The pericardium can close with phlegm. Phlegm occupies the
pericardium. The pericardium can not keep it open or closed.
Insomnia- comes with a variety of issues. 1 hour exercise works better than any herbs. Then
come back, have a shower and a drink, no eating. Go to bed.
How does TCM view PTSD? Not found in TCM documents. Relatively New. For China
recommendation for PTSD is still officially a problem because there is no formal diagnosis.
Therefore, no reports from China on how to treat PTSD because it doesn’t get funding. It could
get recognized in China in the military, but they do not publish anything about the military in
China. So therefore there is no research within PTSD. Flashback means the Hun is not settled.
When the Hun experiences a trauma, the Hun takes a long time to digest it. For many people, the
Hun has to carry this memory day and nighttime, so for TCM it is the problem of the Hun
because the Hun can not process it appropriately. In TCM we have two group of practitioners: 1.
Suppress and stop the liver wind. Hopefully this can suppress the memory. Pearl Powder. He
thinks this is a bad strategy. What we need is to strengthen the liver so the people can have a
powerful and workable liver to help the Hun process and wipe out the bad memories. Therefore,
he would rather recommend the formula to harmonize the liver.
In clinical practice, the more herbs given to the patients, the response is less effective. In China,
they tend to put 4 or 5 formulas together to get a big prescription. Example is the treatment of
Covid 19- they had 19 herbs for the treatment. This is why they didn’t see great results.
Eventually the ones that work much better have less herbs.
Suan Zao Ren- Herb and the food. Good source of food supplement. Totally safe. Wild
Chinese Date. Wild forms are much more effective. If you put this product in your mouth and it
tastes very sour, this is a low quality product. The outside flesh of this fruit is very sour…the

the medicine property.

In clinical practice we always use multiple herbs for situations that need
harmonizing. Liver qi stagnation can lead to multiple/complicated syndrome,
co-existing of heat and cold, shao-yang syndrome (half in and half out),
conditions involving more than one organ. Knowing how to use harmonizing
formulas will allow us much better results than putting lots of formulas
together.
HARMONIZING FORMULAS-
address more than one pathology.
CHAI HU + BAI SHAO= never over 6 months. For
people over 50, 3 months maximum.
SI NI SAN
Original: Negotiating the heat to go from the Shaoyin HT/KD. Treating heat
lead to cold limbs.
Modern: Liver and Spleen Qi Stagnation
Ingredient:
Chai Hu- 9 gram a day. Slightly cold nature. MOVES UP. Clearing heat from
Shaoyang. Chai hu can be used for treating wind attack. However here it is using
its power to rise and spread and goes to the liver channel. It takes the liver power
and lets the liver do its job of spreading liver qi. When the liver is mobilized and
put into a high level of activity, the liver is at high risk to be overused and be
exhausted. This is why we combine it with Bai Shao.
Shao Yao (Bai Shao is preferred)- 12 grams a day. Provides protection to the
liver so the liver isn’t exhausted and damaged.
Zhi Shi- Green orange dried up. MOVES DOWN. Opposite to Chai hu. Chai hu is
upward, Zhi Shi is downward moving.
Gan Cao (Zhi Gan Cao preferred)- zhi gan cao is honey processed.
KEY COMBINATION: CHAI HU + BAI SHAO
This formula only has 4 ingredients, but it represents the overall treatment design
of this strategy. It goes upward, downward to move the liver and has protection to
support the liver.
Modern research: abdominal distension, abdominal distending pain,
emotional fluctuation, cold hand and feet.
Jia Wei Xiao Yao San- Jia Wei means adding ingredients.
DAN PI (cooling down the blood) + ZHI ZI= both cold and cools down
the LV and HT. This is if people have heat. Helps the anxiety, insomnia,
anger, and restlessness.

restlessness, nausea, chest tightness, bitter mouth, dizziness, wiry pulse.
Ingredient:
Chai Hu- Spreading Heat. Chief. Spreads the heat.

heat that has been cleared. So no EPFS can enter.

make eczema worse.
