Read. Match the word to the correct meaning.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I recently enrolled in your cooking course “Gourmet Meals” and I have

now attended five lessons, but I’m not really sure if I’m going to
continue and attend the next lesson.

The course was originally advertised as being for experienced cooks

who wish to expand their repertoire of fine cuisine. I was immediately
attracted because I have been feeling the need to learn some new
techniques. Basically, I was bored of cooking the same old things, so I
enrolled.

Imagine my disappointment when, in the first lesson, we were taught

how to roast a chicken in the oven! The second lesson focused on how
to make a white sauce, the third on grilling salmon. Don’t
misunderstand me—there is nothing wrong with these dishes, but they
can be described as neither “gourmet” nor “advanced.”

You promised the lessons would be given by highly experienced

professional chefs “at the peak of their careers.” While the first tutor is
competent, she is not a professional chef. The other instructor, also
very pleasant and very knowledgeable about fish, works at the fish
counter at my local supermarket. He knows a lot about fish, but I don’t
consider plain grilled salmon to be a very advanced dish. I would have

found it more useful if he had given a demonstration on how to fillet a

fish.

I can get more information from staying at home and watching TV chefs
from the comfort of my own kitchen. I know that I am not the only class
member to be disillusioned. I think it should be renamed: Simple Meals
for Beginners.

I had paid in advance for the whole course of twenty lessons and I’d
like a refund for the remaining fifteen sessions that I will not be
attending. I would also like an explanation as to how this course was
designed and advertised. At best, it makes you look incompetent—
would any of you actually recognize a gourmet meal if you ever had the
chance to sample one?—and at worst, it wastes our precious time and
money.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,
Sam Porter
