Rearrange the equation and write it in slope-intercept form
➢ The slope-intercept form of a linear equation is 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃.
Example: 𝒚 = −𝟐𝒙 + 𝟒 where the slope is −𝟐 and the y-intercept is 𝟒.

➢ The standard form of a linear equation is 𝑨𝒙 + 𝑩𝒚 = 𝑪, where A, B and C are

integers and A, and B are not both equal to zero.
Example: 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟓𝒚 = −𝟑

To find the slope and the y-intercept, we can rearrange an equation in standard form to write
it in slope-intercept by making y the subject of the equation.

Find equation of a line given a point and the slope
How to find the equation of a line that goes through the point (1, 3) and has a slope of 2 .
The equation of a line is given by 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃 where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
So, we need to find m and b.
We are given that the slope is 2 so 𝒎 = 𝟐
𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙 + 𝒃 now this is an equation with 3 unknowns. To find b we should know x and y.
The point (1, 3) belongs to the line so its coordinates verify the equation hence we can
replace x by 1 and y by 3.
3 = 2(1) + 𝑏
3−2=𝑏
𝒃=𝟏
Finally, the equation of the line is 𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙 + 𝟏
Application: Find the equation of the line in each case:

a) Slope is -3 and passing through the point (2, −4).

1
b) Slope is and passing through the point (3, 4).

4
Find equation of a line given 2 points
How to find the equation of a line that goes through the point (1, 3) and the point (-3, 11) .

The equation of a line is given by 𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃 where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
So, we need to find m and b.
𝑦1 −𝑦2 11−3 8
We can find m using the gradient Formula 𝑚 = = = = −2
𝑥1 −𝑥2 −3−1 −4

𝒚 = −𝟐𝒙 + 𝒃 now this is an equation with 3 unknowns. To find b we should know x and y.
The point (1, 3) belongs to the line so its coordinates verify the equation hence we can
replace x by 1 and y by 3. (we could have also used the other point (−3, 11) and get the
same answer.)
3 = −2(1) + 𝑏
3+2=𝑏
𝒃=𝟓
Finally, the equation of the line is 𝒚 = −𝟐𝒙 + 𝟓
Application: Find the equation of the line in each case:

a) Passing through the points (−6, −3) and (3, 3).

b) Passing through the points (2, 0) and (1, 5).

5
Find equation of vertical and horizontal lines

a) Write the equation of the vertical line passing through the point 𝐴(2, −5).

b) Write the equation of the horizontal line passing through the point 𝐵(−4, −8).

c) Write the equation of the line having a slope equal to 0 and passing through the point
𝐶(1, −2).

d) Write the equation of the line having an undefined slope and passing through the point
𝐷(8, 3).

e) Write the equation of the x-axis and the equation of the y-axis.

6
Draw all the vertical lines on one set of axes and all the horizontal lines on another.

I. Solve the following questions showing your work fully:

1) Write the equation of a line whose slope of −3 and y-intercept is 15.

2) Write the equation of a line whose slope is 2 and that passes through the point (−1,1).
