Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to
understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-
by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in
each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or
if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how
they can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any
part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and
tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering
the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

Lesson

1 Homonyms

Learning new words is a lot of fun. It will help you gain proficiency in the English
language. This lesson will let you enjoy while learning. You will have fun looking
at the pictures and reading each sentence for homonyms.
What are homonyms?
Homonyms come from the prefix ‘homo-” which means the same, and “-nym”,
a suffix which means name. So, homonyms mean words that have the same
sound, but have different spellings and meanings.
Read the following sentences below:
1. Luisa gave mother a single flower as a birthday present.
2. Sister Susie used flour in baking bread.
Notice the two words written in bold letters. How do the words flower and flour
have something similar? How do they differ?
Flower and flour have the same sound while they differ in spelling and of course
in meaning. Flower means the seed-bearing part of a plant. Flour is a powder
obtained by grinding grain, typically wheat and used to make bread, cakes, and
pastry.

Study the pictures below.

Did you take note of the words written in bold letters? Did you do what the
author said? Well done! Give yourself three claps for following the author.
But before we proceed in doing what the writer instructed you to do, answer
first the following questions for you to know if you understand what you have
read.
1. Who is talking in the poem?
2. Why did the author all mix up?
3. Did she ask for your help? What does she need?
4. What are the words written in bold letters?
5. What does it mean?
Okay, now check what you have done.
Here are the answers.
1st stanza – know, blue, know, knew
2nd stanza - four, two, I, Bea, red, sea
3rd stanza – do, sew, wear, right, there
What’s your score? Did you get a perfect score? If you get a score between 10-
15, give yourself a thumbs up, but if your score is below, challenge yourself with
this next exercise.
Now, you try this exercise. Read and understand carefully the selection. Select
the correct word found inside the parenthesis that fits the sentence. Write your
answer on a sheet of paper.

5
What a (fine, find) day it is! I heard from my teacher that my sister won
the grand (price, prize) in the school contest for Best Parol 2020. Her “parol” was

others. It took her (for, four) days finishing it. Surely, Father and Mother will be

What’s More

Let’s learn Mathematics while learning the English language. Are you ready?
Do you know how to add and subtract? I know you do. But let’s make it a twist.
Instead of adding or subtracting numbers, you will have to add or subtract
letters in order to form a new homonym of the first word.

Add/subtract letters to form the homonym of the first word. Write the
homonym that fits each sentence. An example has been done for you.

Example: sea - a = se + e = see

I can see the birds flying above the trees.

1. knight - k =

There are stars during __________time.

2. buy – u =

My friend stays __________ my side all the time.

3. won - w = __________ + e =

Give me __________ of your toys.

4. hear - ar = __________ + re =

Put your bag in ___________.

5. knew - k =

Mother bought me a __________ dress for my birthday.
