3. Post-Installation Checks
This Section will test the Autopilot System for proper operation. Prior to starting this Section,
verify the Flight Display is configured correctly and not displaying any caution/warnings.
This Section should be performed after installation and immediately following any
maintenance on the Autopilot System.

3.1 Ground Testing

Prior to starting this section, verify the aircraft’s flight controls, trim motors, and servos have
been inspected per the manufacturer’s installation/maintenance manuals. Any problems in
the Aircraft’s Flight Control System may reduce the performance of the Avidyne Autopilot
System.

3.1.1 Lighting
Verify the Autopilot is connected to the Aircraft’s Instrument Lighting control. While
adjusting the instrument lighting control, verify the Autopilot’s front bezel changes
intensity along with the other avionics equipment.

3.1.2 Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Check

The EMC check verifies that all of the electronic systems installed on the aircraft are
compatible. Operating the Autopilot should not result in Nav flags, constant location
lightning strikes, noise on COMM channels, or other phenomena.
Check the following systems:
Comm Radios: Scan through radio channels to ensure there is no interference
caused by the Autopilot. Check random frequencies from 118.000 MHZ through
136.975 MHZ as well as your local ground and tower frequencies to ensure there
is no break in squelch due to the installation.
● GPS: Ensure that correct position displays and that there is no change in
satellite signal strength.
● Other Instruments: Verify there is no adverse effect on other instruments or
systems with the Autopilot operating.
● Autopilot: Verify the Autopilot is not affected by other aircraft systems.

3.2 Autopilot Inflight Checkout

After completing the Ground Test, a maintenance flight should be performed to verify the
following functions.

3.2.1 DFC90/100 Flight Check

The following modes should be verified during the Flight Check:
Heading Mode
Nav Mode
GPSS Mode (DFC90 Only)
IAS Mode
Vs Mode
Alt Hold/Capture Mode
APPR Mode (Both GPS and VHF Nav)
VNAV (DFC100 Only)
Control Wheel Steering (if equipped)

NOTE: All autopilot discrepancies must be corrected prior to returning the

aircraft to service, reference Section 6 in the DFC90/100 Instructions
for Continued Airworthiness for troubleshooting information if
needed. (Troubleshooting information is also contained in Section 4
of the DFC90/100 Installation Manual)..

After successful completion of the maintenance flight check, complete and install the
Instructions for Continued Airworthiness, DFC90 or DFC100 Airplane Flight Manual
Supplement, Primary Flight Display Release 8 Pilot Guide Addendum (DFC90 Only), and the
Pilot’s Guide into the aircraft. Also, complete an Electrical Load Analysis and update the
Aircraft’s Weight and Balance, reference Section 4 in the DFC90/100 Installation Manual as
needed.

3.2.2 Cirrus SR20 Flight Check

This section is ONLY applicable to the Cirrus SR20.

3.2.2.1 Pitch Trim Tab Test

This test is only for Cirrus SR20 without a Pitch Servo. This test will verify if the
Aircraft’s Pitch (bendable) Trim Tab is set correctly. The aircraft should be
configured for Maximum Weight with a Forward Center of Gravity. After
reaching a safe altitude perform the following steps:
a. Decrease Power to 40% or less
b. Run the Manual Electric Trim for full Pitch Up
c. Verify the Aircraft Stabilizes at an Airspeed ≤90 KIAS
d. Recover to Normal Flight

If the aircraft does not indicate ≤90 KIAS, reference Section 4 of the DFC90/100
Installation Manual.
