challenges of
Globalization
PRESENTED BY: IVY D. LISING
globalization
» describe the growing interdependence
of the world's economies, cultures, and
populations, brought about by cross-
border trade in goods and services,
technology, and flows of investment,
people, and information.
» promotes and increases interactions
between different regions and
populations around the globe.
Four Types
of Change

Globalization
Brings
A stretching of social, intensification of
political and economic interconnectedness
activities across frontiers, and flows of trade,
regions and continents. investment, finance,
migration, culture, etc.

of Change

Brings
deepening impact such that
a speeding up of global the effects of distant events
interactions and can be highly significant
processes, the diffusion of elsewhere & specific local
ideas, goods, information, developments can come to
capital and people. have considerable global
consequences.
in short... Four Types
of Change
Globalization
Brings
Globalization can be
thought of as the widening,
intensifying, speeding up, and
growing impact of world-
wide interconnectedness.
BENEFITS of
Globalization
Corruption
1. Access to New Cultures
makes it easier than ever to access foreign
culture, including food, movies, music, and art.
This free flow of people, goods, art, and
information is the reason you can have Thai
food delivered to your apartment as you
listen to your favorite UK-based artist or
stream a Bollywood movie.
Corruption
2. The Spread of Technology and
Innovation
Many countries around the world remain
constantly connected, so knowledge and
technological advances travel quickly.
Corruption
3. Lower Costs for Products
allows companies to find lower-cost ways to
produce their products.
increases global competition, which drives
prices down and creates a larger variety of
choices for consumers.
Lowered costs help people in both developing
and already-developed countries live better
on less money.
Negative Effects of
Globalization
Sweatshops
a shop or factory in which
employees work for long
hours at low wages and
under unhealthy conditions.
SWEATSHOPS
PIECE-RATE
- the mode of payment whereby an employee is paid on
the basis of his production, i.e. on the amount or quantity
of work done rather than time employed.
Sweatshops
abuses child labor, sometimes
children as young as five or six.
mandatory overtime
sometimes 24-hour shifts
dangerous, unhealthy workplaces
no protective equipment
verbal intimidation
harassment
SWEATSHOPS
Sweatshops
forced pregnancy tests and firing
of pregnant women.
physical and sexual abuse by
supervisors, managers, and
armed guards
no breaks during the work day,
even to go to the bathroom
lock-ins to prevent workers from
stealing or leaving the factory
violent ends for those who try to
organize unions.
NIKE
Nike is facing issues regarding physical and
verbal abuse towards workers in
Indonesian factories, similar to the ones in
sweatshops in 2005. Workers claimed that
supervisors would “throw shoes at them”
and “slap them in the face.” These issues
are similar to the ones back in 2005, as
workers are also underpaid, making around
“50 cents an hour.” (2013)

Job Displacement
A shift in skills and education
required for higher-paying jobs.
Technology replacing humans.
There are more jobs and industry
growth, rising wealth, etc. BUT there are
major issues of human rights and
environmental protection at stake.
Environmental
ISSUES
AGRICULTURE
- use of rural lands and development of sustainable farming;
- pesticide/herbicide use;
- bioengineering and genetically modified organisms.
ATMOSPHERE
- climate change/global warming,
- acid rain, smog, ozone depletion.
BIODIVERSITY
- “types of biodiversity and the plight of endangered
species.”
ENERGY
- the use of fossil fuels (oil, coal)
- the need to develop alternative energy sources.
FORESTS
- deforestation and regrowth.
FRESH WATERS
- changing patterns, desalination, declining supplies of fresh
water.
MARINE WATERS
- threats to the life of the aquatic organisms in seas.
ECOLOGY
- disturbance to the relationships between living organisms,
and their physical environment.
HABITAT LOSS
- threats to species survival, causes, and solutions.
INDUSTRY
- the environmental impacts of industrial globalization.
POPULATION
- growth, pressure, geographic patterns.
Globalization may
also lead to…
Corruption
any unlawful or improper behavior that seeks
to gain an advantage through illegitimate
means.
Bribery
means giving or receiving an unearned reward to
influence someone's behavior.
One common form of bribery is a "kickback" - an
unearned reward following favorable treatment.
“We must ensure that the
global market is embedded
in broadly shared values and
practices that reflect global
social needs, and that all the
world's people share the
benefits of globalization.”
— Kofi Annan
