This document discusses a study on the impact of face-to-face classes on the academic performance of grade 10 students at Doroteo S. Mendoza Sr. Memorial National Highschool. The study found that students' academic performance and understanding of lessons improved with face-to-face classes compared to modular learning. Face-to-face classes allow real-time teacher guidance and interaction between students and teachers. However, health protocols during the pandemic created challenges like difficulty seeing or hearing in class. The purpose of the study is to understand these impacts and challenges to help teachers better support students.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the importance of face to face classes to the student. It
also explained the benefits of face-to-face classes and the effect of the face to face classes to
academic performance of the student. The purpose of this research is to know why face-to-
face classes is needed by our students for their studies. This study utilized a qualitative
research design through Google and validated interview questions. All of the questions that
were given to the Grade 10 student at DSMSMNHS had the permission of their adviser. And
it was found out that during modular they did not understand the module that was given, but
since face-to-face started they clearly understood the lesson because they have a teacher that
can guide them and teach them. In fact, face-to-face is needed by all students because it can
improve their interaction between student and teacher and also their academic performance in
their studies. And it says that face-to-face is better for our students than modular.

I. Introduction

During the pandemic, face-to-face classes are limited. When piloting face-to-face

started, there were a lot of challenges that the student might encounter. Some students said

that they couldn’t understand the lesson very well due to the limited time allotted for face-to-

face learning. Students and teachers are hardly adjusting to the standard health protocol

(HANA BORDEY, 2021). Physical distancing is one of the reasons why they can’t

understand the lesson because they can’t clearly see what is written on the board, and they

also can’t clearly hear what the teacher is saying because of the barriers and face mask. Some

students are not ready to have face-to-face classes because it’s hard for them to adjust

because they used to study with their modules for the past 2 years. They also encountered

difficulty talking because they were wearing masks and had a tendency to remove their masks

during classes. Teachers also encountered challenges in teaching their students. They can’t

monitor their students very well because of the barriers. They can’t also speak clearly, which

tends to mean that the student can’t understand the lesson. Like the student, they also can’t

hear what the student is trying to say. That challenge has a big impact on the academic

performance of the students. Their academic performance might decrease. To improve the

academic performance of the student, face-to-face is one of the solutions. "Healthier" is how

the Department of Health (DOH) described face-to-face classes as its way of pushing

students to return to school after more than two years of online learning. Face-to-face

attendance in school will allow children to develop their cognitive and social skills

experientially (GMA News, 2022). This states that children will only gain their social

experiences at school. They can’t gain any experience if they are still stuck on modular. Face-

to-face classes boost academic performance, improve mental health and well-being, and help

develop social engagement skills (DOH, 2022). The academic performance of students might

improve if the teachers are on their side to guide them when they have a problem

understanding the lesson. There will be less stress for students in face-to-face classes, so their

mental health will improve. The whole point of studying is to learn things that they don’t

know. So, it’s only human that you are going to have questions and will require help with

various elements of your study. Face-to-face learning will ensure that you can receive help at

the exact moment you need it (MyPath Education, 2022). When the students do not

understand the lesson, they can ask their teachers, and the teacher will explain it to them on

the spot. In that way, the student can clearly understand the lesson. Face-to-face interaction

transmits valuable social information about goals and motivations in addition to visual

information about the task (James Dean, 2022). This states that face-to-face has benefits, like

the ability for students to interact with each other. Therefore, this study aims to understand

the impact of face-to-face classes on students' academic performance. Not only students but

also teachers will benefit from this study. The teachers will be able to understand the

challenges of the students so they can adjust and do something to solve the challenges that

they might encounter.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to understand the impact of face-to-face classes on the academic

performance of the students. Some research shows that some student’s performance has

improved since face-to-face classes began. This study also seeks the experiences of the

students for the past 7 months since the face-to-face classes started. Some challenges that

may be encountered if face-to-face time is limited are a lack of instructional time and

collaboration and difficulty understanding the lesson and activities.

Research Questions:

1. What has been the hardest part about completing schoolwork since the face-to-face

classes started?

2. Is there any improvement in academic performance since the face-to-face classes

started?

3. Is it easier to understand the lesson when the face-to-face classes start?

4. Are there any challenges faced in attending face-to-face classes?

5. What will be the possible problems that can be encountered if there are no face-to-

face classes?

II. Methodology

Research Design

In this study, a qualitative investigation was used, allowing the researcher to gain a

deeper understanding of the outcome of face-to-face classes with Grade 10 pupils. Qualitative

research has the advantage of gaining the opinions of the students by answering the research

questions.

Respondents to the study

The respondents to the study are the Grade 10 students of Doroteo S. Mendoza Sr.

Memorial National High School (DSMSMNHS). There were 27 Grade 10 students who

responded in DSMSMNHS who volunteered to answer the questionnaire that was given and

provided time to participate in this study.

Research Instrument

In this study, the primary tool used to gather data was a survey paper. The

respondents should answer the given research questions. This survey was focused on the

opinions of the respondents.

Data Gathering Procedure

Prior to data gathering, researchers prepared the research question on the survey paper

and distributed it to the respondents. The data-gathering procedure was done on a survey

paper. Keep their answers. All the answers were summarized and analyzed. The answers

were formal, and no symbolism was used.

III. Result and Discussion

Result

Respondents Profession

Online Survey 11 Grade-10 Students

Survey Paper 16 Grade-10 Students

The hardest part about completing schoolwork:

In the online survey, 11  respondents’ answers were different from each other, but almost all

said that the hardest part about completing schoolwork is managing time to complete the

schoolwork. As for the survey paper (16), respondents answered that the hardest part about

completing schoolwork is if they don't understand the lesson and activities.

 Improvement in academic performance:

Both online and survey papers (27) have the same answer: their academic performance

improved when the face-to-face started because they said that it was easy to understand the

lesson.

Is it easier to understand the lesson when the face-to-face classes start?

In both online and survey papers (27) they said that it is easier to understand the lesson when

it is face-to-face because the teacher can explain the lesson and also guide them.

Challenges in attending face-to-face:

In the online survey (11) respondents' answers were different; others said that the challenges

they face are if they do not understand the lesson, speaking in front of the class, and waking

up early. As for the survey paper (16), the respondent's answer is also different; they said

that, if they do not understand the lesson, there is an absence of transportation and financial

resources, but they almost said that there is a risk in COVID 19.

Possible problems that they encounter if there is no face-to-face:

Both online and survey papers (27) said that if there is no face-to-face interaction, students

cannot understand the lesson.

Understanding the lessons has been a common problem for students since face-to-face

started. Because during the pandemic they cannot understand the module that was given by

the teacher, and in fact they use Google to answer it, they cannot understand the lesson.

Regarding the benefits of face-to-face classes, they said that face-to-face classes improve

their academic performance because they clearly understand the lesson. This is evident from

both online and survey papers. Face-to-face is better than modular because it is easier to

understand the lesson because it can be explained by the teacher.

The most common reason why face-to-face is better than modular is because it can

boost the students' confidence and knowledge.

Understanding the lesson is the biggest obstacle for students if there are no face-to-

face classes. It can affect the academic performance of the students. They can't clearly

understand the lesson because there is no face-to-face interaction, and no one can guide and

teach them the lesson. The only solution is to have face-to-face classes so they can clearly

understand the lesson, and at the same time, their academic performance will increase.
