PROJECT ON SUSTAINABLE USE OF WATER & RIVER WATER SHARING –
GR 10

Aim: To study about interstate rivers in India, disputes associated with sharing of the river
water and also to study the feasibility of interlinking rivers of India.

Introduction: Water is said to be the elixir of life. We get water from rivers, lakes, ponds
and from rain. Ground water is also a source. Water is a precious resource. Though it is a
renewable resource, the present rate of consumption is such that we might deplete this
resource very soon. Though India is land of rivers, we face water shortage in many parts
of India. Every summer, this problem looms large over every state. We also face tension
on account of sharing of river water. Public outrage, unrest, war of words, court
proceedings, high level meetings, agreements and bandh on account of water sharing are all
common. In this project, we study about the interstate rivers and the disputes related to
sharing of water resource and also study the ways of sustainable use of water resources.

Water – A Renewable Resource

(Explain Water Cycle with picture)
Water is a natural resource. The hydrological cycle makes it a renewable resource. Water
from streams, lakes, ponds, rivers and oceans evaporate and become water vapour. This
vapour rises up and forms clouds. The water content in the clouds reach saturation point,
condense and fall as rain, hail, sleet and snow.

Sources of fresh water: Rivers, Lakes, Ponds, Rain, Ground Water

Uses of water:
• Domestic Use – drinking, washing, bathing, cooking
• Industrial use
• Agricultural use – irrigation
• Power generation
• Recreation (Stick relevant pictures)
Important rivers of India : Himalayan and Peninsular rivers (Refer Class IX Geography
text book for details – Mark on Rivers map of India)

Inter state rivers and disputes

• Meaning of interstate river
• Examples of interstate river
• Rights of riparian state in water sharing
• Disputes in water sharing

Kaveri River

• Source of Kaveri River

• Length
• Area drained
• Importance of the river – in mythology, literature (silapathikaram)
• States involved
• Hydrological structures across river kaveri
1. Grand Anaicut built by Karikalan
2. Krishnaraja sagar dam
3. Shivasamudram falls and hydel power project
4. Mettur – Stanley Reservoir
(with pictures)
• Delta Regions
• Mouth of the River

Dispute
• Problem of water sharing
• Reasons for disputes (increase in cultivated area, mismanagement of water, wastage of
rain water etc)
• Kaveri water tribunal
• Award by the tribunal
• Recent happenings (relevant newspaper cuttings)

Interlinking of rivers
Meaning
Feasibility and problems (changing the course of the rivers, cutting across different terrains,
how it would affect aquatic life and the eco system of the region, deforestation,
displacement of people etc)
 Water and Sustainable development
Conservation of water
• Reasons for water scarcity – Qualitative and Quantitative
• Need for conservation – Available fresh water supply, increasing demand, growing
population, change in climatic conditions, monsoon failure etc
• Methods of conservation – dams and reservoirs, control over usage, de-silting of rivers
and lakes, pollution control, rain water harvesting, desalination of sea water

Conclusion: What did you learn from the project?

Make a colourful Poster on Water conservation
