ENGG 410 Problem Set 2-2 - Axial Load
ENGG 410 Problem Set 2-2 - Axial Load
Axial Load
Directions: Answer the following problems and present a logical solution. Write legibly using
engineering lettering (upper case/lower case will do) on a letter sized bond paper with 1
inch invisible margin on all sides. Write your names on all sheets. Rewrite the problem. You
may not redraw the figure if you can present a logical solution without it, After finishing the
problem set, scan the sheets or take photos and send a copy to your class representative.
The file name of each problem set for each student should be as follows: Surname_SR
Code_PSet2-2. No other file names will be accepted. The class representative should then
compile an-d zip/archive the files and send to the class representatives’ group. Deadline of
submission is on 11-October-2020 at 12 noon. Once you have submitted to your class
representative, click the “Mark as Done” button on our google classroom for this activity. Do
not attempt to falsely click the “mark as done” button while not having to submit yet or does
not intend to do the work. I can track your submissions. Do not attempt to submit others work
as your own, rules agreed on course orientation will apply.
1.0 The post weighs 8 kN/m. Determine the internal normal force in the post as a
function of x.
2.0 The rigid beam supports the load of 60 kN. Determine the displacement at B . Take
E = 60 GPa, and ABC = 2 x 10−3 m2
4.0 The A992 steel rod is subjected to the loading shown. If the cross-sectional area of
the rod is 60 mm2, determine the displacement of B and A , Neglect the size of the
couplings at B , C , and D.
5.0 The composite shaft, consisting of aluminum, copper, and steel sections, is
subjected to the loading shown. Determine the displacement of end A with
respect to end and the normal stress in each section. The cross sectional area and
modulus of elasticity for each section are shown in the figure. Neglect the size of
the collars at B and C. Also, determine the displacement of B with respect to C of
the composite shaft.
7.0 The support consists of a solid red brass C83400 copper post surrounded by a 304
stainless steel tube. Before the load is applied the gap between these two parts is 1
mm. Given the dimensions shown, determine the greatest axial load that can be
applied to the rigid cap A without causing yielding of any one of the materials.
9.0 The assembly has the diameters and material make-up indicated. If it fits securely
between its fixed supports when the temperature is T1 = 70OF, determine the
average normal stress in each material when the temperature reaches T2 = 100OF.
10.0 The 50-mm diameter cylinder is made from Am 1004-T61 magnesium and is
placed in the clamp when the temperature is 15OC. If the two 304-stainless-steel
carriage bolts of the clamp each have a diameter of 10 mm, and they hold the
cylinder snug with negligible force against the rigid jaws, determine the
temperature at which the average normal stress in either the magnesium or the
steel first becomes 12 MPa.
