mathematics even in my junior and senior high school. I can’t say that I hate numbers
because as I observed, we use it in such many ways like counting the days, checking
the change coins whenever we buy something, measuring the height, weight of
something, counting money that we have, how much we get and how much we have
spent and yes I consciously observe that we use math/numbers in any aspects of our
lives. Honestly, I find it so much difficult when it comes in solving mathematics
equations and I already observed it when I was elementary learner. I think that’s the
reason why I am not interested in math because math sometimes slaps me like I am a
dumb person. Sounds hilarious but that’s the kind of feeling I really felt whenever I do
math in school. But we bring or go to school to learn and teachers are there to teach us
and to clarify our minds so if there is something bothering us or something we don’t get,
we should not be ashamed to ask because it is for our own learnings.
In elementary, basically I learned about four operations, the addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division, fractions, decimals etc. It is not become really easy for me, I
think because I don’t have that interest and I always think that it is so difficult but a time
goes by, I learned it by gradually putting my interest on it because if I don’t, my grade
will probably fail. I get some good grades in math but not that excellent like what my
classmates had before, it was just fine for me and I accepted it for I was the one who is
accountable for my grades. It is just I learned to be contented and keep on learning. As
a child, I know already I am struggling learning it and sometimes there comes a moment
of discouragement but with the help of my teachers they turned that feeling of
discouragements into boosting my stimulation to learn, they have their unique ways to
make learnings more fun and interesting specifically in mathematics. They have these
strategies to energize us help us to build our confidence and always cheering us
whenever we failed and encourage us to never give up and just always try our best in
everything we do. So as a child, we really enjoyed and felt the positive vibes they had
showed us, that become one of the reasons why I learned mathematics, helps me to
really not struggle but to enjoy while learning it.
When I was in my secondary, the level of learnings is higher. The complexity
specifically in mathematics is hard and it’s new to me and I’ve got a lot of adjustments
just to cope up with lessons. I have encountered different equations and different
solutions, the algebraic expression, polynomials, integers, function notation, solving for
x, the Cartesian coordinate plane, synthetic division, geometry, arithmetic sequence,
statistics and probability etc. Even if I don’t recall it one by one and state how it is done
but I do remember that these are been tackled when I was in secondary level. At least I
did try my best to learn also through motivating myself to gain knowledge and to
enhance my capability to answer such kind of problem solving. Until I graduated from
senior high with a flying colors, no regrets but with joy and fulfillment. Holding all my
learnings and skills which been molded by the past years that will serves as my weapon
to face my another journey through college life.
Entering college life also not become easy for me. I have been encountered so
much struggles, first, in taking up the University Admission Test in that moment I felt
nervous, pressuring myself, the doubt to myself that what if I don’t pass the test? What if
I fail? Despite of all what If’s I still manage to keep forward, and turned those negative
thoughts to positive one. We answered different categories that includes mathematics, it
is more on logical and sequences, it is hard yet I tried my best to answer those difficult
questions while hardly hoping and praying that I might pass the exam. Then the results
came out and fortunately I passed it but it is not the end yet. We’ve been through
departmental exams and interview it is not become easy yet I still pursue and believe
that I can make it. I surpassed all the process and I am so grateful and fulfilled for I
realized that all of the efforts I have been put just to passed become worth it. Honestly,
the course that I take is Bachelor of Secondary Education but unfortunately, I didn’t
make it because my average didn’t get the required passing average to BSED and the
slots are only limited so the faculty department decided to put my name on the list of
Bachelor of Elementary Education. I admit that I become disappointed especially to
myself because I failed but still I encourage myself to move forward and accept the fact
that not all the time, the things that we want will not come the way we tend it to
happened. I gradually embraced the course and eventually love it.
As a teacher, it is necessary to teach the purpose of education to their students
for them to know why they are in school? why they need to go to school? how schooling
help them to achieved their goals in life? It is to provides the fullest possible
development of each learner for living morally, creatively, and productivity in a
democratic society. I believe that we are all capable for learning may it be in a different
way but still learning. Sometimes the students hate not the mathematics but how it
taught so it will be take in to the part of teachers to create some possible ways on how
to deliver the lesson more interesting and fun to have an effective and efficient in
acquiring of knowledge. As a teacher I will think some interesting activities regarding in
the certain subject and look for some other ways on how I can effectively handle the
subject and search some strategies that I might be use to attract the learning stimulation
of their pupils/students.
Learning will be easier for us to gain specially in learning mathematics, when if
we find it more fun and interesting. In teaching Mathematics, as a teacher, I want my
students to involve them with the lessons specifically in math, so besides they are
learning, they are also enjoying what they learn. A teacher that thinks about the good
sake of their students and helps their students to bring out the best in them is an idea of
being a good teacher. Helps their students to aspire and aim to their goals to achieved,
teach their students not just only to be intellectually intelligent but also to have good
values. Guide them to hone their capabilities and build their characters to be better
citizens of the society. This desires will be a great big help for a student to be more
inspire to learn, their potentials will be increasingly developed and making them realize
that there is no impossible as long they are willing and have interest in everything they
do this for sure all will be possible. This would be my guiding light through my future
career where will I be able to look back while I am on my journey bound to be a teacher
someday.
1. How did those personal history of yours in learning mathematics affects/changes
your perspective in teaching mathematics?
My personal history in learning mathematics affects or changes my
perspective in teaching the certain subject through realizing that
mathematics is necessary to learn for it is applied not just in school but
also in our daily living. It affects my perspective in teaching for it becomes
my realization, as a teacher, we should teach mathematics wherein the
students/pupils will be enjoyed and will find it interesting to learn. I just
realized that sometimes the students hate not the mathematics but how it
taught. It mostly depends on the teacher on how they teach the subject on
how they handle it and what strategies they were going to use specifically
in teaching mathematics to attract the learning stimulation of their
pupils/students.
2. How are you going to advice those learners who hate mathematics?
The advice that I am going to give to those who hate mathematics
is that give their selves a chance to get some interest to learn the subject
because if they learned it, it is for their own benefits and mathematics is
already part of our living may we unconsciously observed it but it does, if
we just open our eyes. Even a little interest is can already be a way to
gradually liking it and if you do, you will just found out that you’re already
enjoying it.
