ABIO

The document discusses baseband pooling capabilities of the Nokia AirScale capacity unit (ABIO) and ABIN plug-in units. It describes how ABIO contains two baseband pools each with their own layer 1 pool, while ABIN contains two layer 2 pools sharing a single layer 1 pool. The document also outlines new counters and parameters introduced in Single RAN Features release SRAN 21A relating to baseband pooling functionality and monitoring.

Baseband pooling on ABIO/ABIN

Description of baseband (BB) pooling for two TXRX and four TXRX cells, as well as for eight TXRX cells with
eCPRI fronthaul protocol

With the LTE5567: Resource Pooling for ABIO/ABIN feature, BB resources can be dynamically shared
among the two TXRX and four TXRX cells on the 5-MHz, 10-MHz, 15-MHz, and 20-MHz bandwidths in
configuration with ASIB + ABIO/ABIN for FDD-LTE and TDD-LTE.

With the LTE5568: TDD Resource Pooling for ABIO/ABIN feature, BB resources can be dynamically shared
among the eight TXRX cells with eCPRI fronthaul protocol in configuration with ASIB + ABIO/ABIN for
TDD-LTE.

For more information, see the SBTS Dimensioning document in Single RAN Operating Documentation.

ABIO and ABIN plug-in units are cost-efficient BB cards for 5G and LTE technologies. Both ABIO and ABIN
have two BB pools.

For ABIO, each L2 pool has its own L1 pool.

ABIO supports intra-BB card I/Q data rerouting functionality. Due to this function it is possible to
reroute the data of radio units connected to RF ports 1-6 to BB pool 2 for BB processing and vice versa.
Thus a balanced loading of the two BB pools can be achieved no matter to which RF port the radio unit
is connected to.

If cells are cabled in ports 1-6, they are automatically allocated to BB pool 1; cells cabled to ports 1-9
are allocated to BB pool 2.
If all radios are cabled to ports 1-6, you can manually configure load balancing between both BB
pools, which triggers IQ data forwarding.

For ABIN, there are two layer 2 (L2) pools, sharing a single layer 1 (L1) pool.

The following new counters are introduced in SRAN 21A:

Number of discarded packets in UL due to U-Plane Overload per BB pool to
show the number of discarded packets in UL due to U-plane overload per BB pool.
Number of discarded packets in DL due to U-Plane Overload per BB pool to
show the number of discarded packets in DL due to U-plane overload per BB pool.

indication calculated per L1 Pool.

indication calculated per L1 Pool
Average LTE UL capacity indication of L1 pool to show the average LTE UL capacity

The BBPOOLALLOC Hosting physical layer pool (L1) ID ( hostingPhyPoolId )

parameter, introduced in SRAN 21A, indicates the ID of the physical layer pool (L1) the cell is allocated
to. When this ID is 0 , it means that the cell is not allocated to a L1 pool because there are no resources
available.

The LNBTS Activate baseband pooling ( actBbPooling ) parameter value must be always set
to true for the SBTS with ABIN/ABIO and also for mixed configurations with ABIA.
