Exercise 2.1 - 2.3

This document contains an extra exercise with questions on functions and their domains, inverses, composition, factoring using long division and synthetic division. It asks the student to: 1) Determine the domain, inverse, and composition of various functions. 2) Use long division to factor polynomials and find quotients and remainders when dividing polynomials. 3) Use synthetic division to show that an expression is or is not a factor, and to factor polynomials completely. The student provides answers for each part, performing the requested operations and showing work where needed.

𝑥−1
i. the domain 𝑓(𝑥) and 𝑔(𝑥).
ii. the inverse of (𝑓 + 𝑔)(𝑥).
iii. 𝑓 −1 (5)

QUESTION 2

a) If (x+1) is one of the factors of the function h(x)=2𝑥 3 + 9𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 4. Then find the remaining
factors of h(x) using long division method.
b) Use long division method to find the quotient and remainder when g(x)=8𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 2
is divided by 𝑥 2 + 𝑥 + 1.

QUESTION 3

a) Show that (x-1) is NOT a factor of f(x)=𝑥 3 − 9𝑥 2 + 26𝑥 − 24. Hence, use synthetic division to
determine the quotient and remainder when f(x) is divided by (x-1).
b) Show that (x+2) is a factor of P(x)=2𝑥 3 + 5𝑥 2 − 𝑥 − 6. Hence, use synthetic division to
factorize the function completely.
