T
his month a few of our regular
contributors have shared their
favourite builds of 2020. I suspect
that, with one thing and another, many
of us have had more time to build models
this year than in recent ones and, for me
at least, this has been the opportunity to
get some older kits out of the stash. As
you saw last month, that included building Tamiya’s M2A2
ODS Bradley, but I also built their original 1985 release. It’s
quite amazing really that a kit over 35 years old still holds up
in terms of accuracy and, most of all, in sheer ‘buildability’.
Having also built Tamiya’s old Challenger 1 this year, I can
certainly vouch for the joys of building these older kits. I
have plans this year to build the 1990s-vintage Academy
M113, so stay tuned. What I have noticed though is that
whenever you decide to build an older kit that isn’t in your
stash, you too often discover that kit is now longer widely
available and commands absurdly high prices on eBay! The
moral(s) of this story: you can never have enough plastic
in your stash and a purchase made today is a saving made
tomorrow!
Last summer Glen Phelan, a veteran of several United
Nations tours with the Irish Army, wrote an Armour in
Profile article on the UN’s peacekeeping missions in
Africa. Glen returns this issue with the history of another
UN mission of which he has personal experience: UNIFIL
in Lebanon. Our Armour in Profile provides real insight
into this ongoing mission and is illustrated with some
previously unseen images of a range of vehicles. UNIFIL and
the war in Lebanon also provide the inspiration for Imad
Bouantoun, who builds Tiger Models’ AML-90, while Ilya
Yut returns with MiniArt’s unusual South Lebanese Army
APC. Glen’s article has also inspired me to build Tamiya’s
Leclerc main battle tank in UNIFIL markings. This article was
helped by Patrick Winnepenninckx’s superb collection of
reference photos, taken when he too served with UNIFIL,
and by those of Colonel Thomas Seignon, himself a senior
French officer during the UNIFIL deployment. It’s a great
privilege to be able to feature this type of unique reference
and I hope you find it as useful and interesting as I did.
World War II modellers won’t be disappointed this month
by Roman Volchenkov’s build of Dragon’s superb Pz.Bef.
Wg III in Afrika Korps markings, while David Strauss tackles
MiniArt’s GAZ-AAA truck. We also take an in-depth look
at the first of MiniArt’s new Panzer IV series. Last, but by
no means least, David Chou presents AFV Club’s gorgeous
recent M109. Until next month, happy modelling.

The Scud-B ballistic

missile was one of the
iconic weapons systems
of the Cold War, reaching
notoriety, of course,
during the First Gulf
War as Saddam Hussein
attempted to draw
Israel into the conflict by
launching Scuds on Israeli
towns. The R-17 (SS-1C
Scud-B), as it was properly
known, entered service in
1964 and some 7,000 were
manufactured. It served © Richard Andrews

One DFF soldier, 19-year old

The battle was considered a
UN victory, and a watershed
moment for UNIFIL, in which
UN peacekeepers were
attacked but managed to set a
new standard for UN operations
by successfully defending their
position. After the battle, the
UN Security Council adopted
resolution 427(1980), which
sanctioned return fire by UNIFIL
troops in self-defence.
Following the battle of At
Tiri, Major Saad Haddad gave
an ultimatum to UNIFIL to
either compensate the family
of Massoud Bassi or to produce
the bodies of the two KIA UN
soldiers. On 18 April, a UNIFIL
party set out on a resupply
mission to a UN post near
the Israeli border, within the
‘enclave’. The party consisted
of three Irish soldiers (Private
John O’Mahony, Private
Thomas Barrett and Private
Derek Smallhorne) an American
officer (Harry Klein), a French
officer (Patrick Vincent) and two
journalists. The convoy, despite
misgivings, went ahead without
an adequate escort, everyone
being unarmed except for
two of the Irish soldiers. Klein
fatefully ordered it to continue
even after warning signs
became apparent along the
route, passing normally busy
DFF checkpoints, with the Irish
troops expressing concerns.
Ultimately, the party was
intercepted by the militia, and
all involved taken prisoner.
