Lab Guide:

Mounting a VMware VM
Document Introduction
Overview

In this lab you will perform a series of activities. First, you will recover a
VM from a backup image. You will be able to use any, and all, of the
following procedures.

● Mounting a snapshot image to an existing host,


● Mounting a dedup image to an existing host, (optional)
● Mounting a snapshot image to a new host,
● Mounting a dedup image to a new host, (optional)

Hardware and Software required to complete this exercise

Laptop/Desktop Computer connected to the Education Virtual Lab


environment.

Preparation
Consult your lab worksheet and determine the names and addresses that
you will be using for this lab.

Note:

If you are not sure which addresses to use, please contact your
instructor.

Document Purpose
Overview

The purpose of the document is to provide the learners with the exact
steps that they will need to perform while mounting a snapshot image to
an existing as well as a new VM Host and mounting a Dedup Image to
an existing as well as a new VM Host.

Presentation Technique
This document contains screen captures of all the screens that the
students will be viewing during the Lab session and the corresponding
steps listed underneath the screen describing the action to be performed.
Additionally, there will be highlighted areas to bring focus to the activity
areas of the screen.

Steps to be performed
Part One: Mounting a Snapshot Image to an Existing VM
Host

Instructions
1. From the Virtual Lab desktop, connect your browser to your
assigned IVGM appliance.

2. Once logged in, Open the Backup & Recover screen, and select
Recover. When the Recover Wizard opens, select Application, and
then Next.

3. Once all the discovered applications are displayed, select the VM


to be recovered (in this example, linux-vm.afedu.local) and select
Next to continue.

4. The next step is to select the point in time image that you want to
recover. From the list of backup images in the Snapshot pool,
select the closest (latest) image. Verify that the display box on the
right-hand side of the screen represents the latest snapshot image.

5. Within the Display Box, select Mount from the recovery options.

6. At the top of the screen, select that you wish to mount to an
Existing Host.

7. Fill-in the details of the mount dialogue box. For the purposes of
this exercise, you will except all of the default parameters. You
may choose to provide a label.

8. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and Submit the job.

9. After seeing the success message, you can view the progress of the
mount operation on the System Monitor screen.

Part Two: Mounting a Dedup Image to an Existing VM Host
(Optional Lab)

Instructions
1. If you have not already done so, connect your browser to your
assigned IVGM appliance.

2. Once logged in, Open the Backup & Recover screen, and select
Recover. When the Recover Wizard opens, select Application, and
then Next.

3. Once all the discovered applications are displayed, select the VM
to be recovered and select Next to continue.

4. The next step is to select the point in time image that you want to
recover. From the list of backup images in the Dedup pool, select
the closest (latest) image. Verify that the display box on the right-
hand side of the screen represents the latest dedup image.

5. Select Mount from the Mount operations dropdown box.

6. At the top of the screen, select that you wish to mount to an


Existing Host. Fill-in the details of the mount dialogue box. For the
purposes of this exercise, you will except all of the default
parameters. You may choose to provide a label

7. Complete filling in the dialogue box; deciding which of the dedup
Options you wish to apply and submit the job.

8. Monitor the progress of the job until it successfully completes using


the System Monitor.

Part Three: Mounting a Snapshot Image to a New VM Host
Instructions
1. If you have not already done so, connect your browser to your
assigned IVGM appliance.

2. Once logged in, Open the Backup & Recover screen, and select

6. At the top of the screen, select that you wish to mount to a New
Host. Specify that the New VM Name is the same as the image
host name (in this example: linux-vm.afedu.local) with the word
NewSnap as the first word (NewSnap-linux-vm.afedu.local).
From the VCENTER dropdown box, select the vCenter that you
previously discovered, and the same for the ESX HOST. From the
DATASTORE dropdown, select the largest datastore listed.

7. After completing all of the dialogue fields, submit the job.
Monitor the progress on the System Monitor screen.

Part Four: Mounting a Dedup Image to a New VM Host

Instructions
1. If you have not already done so, connect your browser to your
assigned IVGM appliance.

2. Once logged in, Open the Backup & Recover screen, and select
Recover. When the Recover Wizard opens, select Application, and
then Next.
