M1 - ProbSet1.1 - Phys102

This document contains instructions and two physics problems for Problem Set 1.1 of PHYS102. Problem 1 asks to find the final temperature of a system containing a copper pot of water and an iron block after they are combined, assuming no heat loss. Problem 2 asks to calculate the thermal conductivity of a metal rod that melts a given amount of ice over a period of time by conducting heat between two fixed temperatures at its ends.

PHYS102

M1 Problem Set 1.1

Instructions: Show your complete solution and box the final answer with an
appropriate unit.

1. A copper pot with a mass 0.500 kg contains 0.170 kg of water, and both are
at 20.0°C. A 0.250 kg block of iron at 85.0°C is dropped into the pot. Find
the final temperature of the system, assuming no heat loss to the
surroundings. (5 pts)

2. One end of an insulated metal rod is maintained at 100°C, and the other end
is maintained at 0.00°C by an ice-water mixture. The rod is 60.0 cm long and
has a cross-sectional area of 1.25 cm! . The heat conducted by the rod melts
8.50 g of ice in 10.0 min. Find the thermal conductivity 𝑘 of the metal. (5
pts)
