Rabies is a serious viral disease spread to humans through animal bites or scratches. It attacks the central nervous system and is almost always fatal if untreated. In Ontario, animals that commonly spread rabies include bats, skunks, foxes, and cats. To protect against rabies, pets should be vaccinated and people should avoid contact with wild or stray animals. If bitten or scratched by an animal, the area should be washed with soap and water and medical attention sought immediately.
