technology. It is also referred to as distance learning and acquisition of learning through audiovisual aids
and computer. Such methods incorporate visual graphics, text, animations, videos and audio. (Wan
Azarias 2015). online learning is defined as a teaching and learning process between instructor and
learners that involves various digital mediums, such as 'Whatsapp', 'Zoom', and 'Google Classroom'.as
well as other institutions learning platforms. In addition, online learning does not refer to direct learning
alone. Any assignments or activities, provided by the teacher online, are considered part of online
learning.
Online learning started as early as 17th century with letter writing and correspondence, and as a means
of learning for those students who could not attend traditional classroom learning.
Online learning has gained significant prominence in recent years, especially with the advent of
technological advancements and the widespread accessibility of the internet. This mode of education
has revolutionized the way individuals acquire knowledge, offering flexible learning options, and
bridging geographical barriers. However, the question remains: can online learning truly replace
traditional teaching methods? This assignment aims to explore the effectiveness of online learning and
evaluate the extent to which it can serve as a substitute for traditional classroom-based education.
According to ( Miller 2014) about 32℅ of students in the united states take at least one online classes in
the fall.
Traditional method of learning on the other hand has been happening since plato and socrates, this
form of learning has been practice for over 500 years. Traditional methods of learning can be described
face to face learning which involves the present of instructor and learners in the same location at the
same time during meeting (Redmond 2011, p.1051) with the classes held either on campuses or at a
remote off campus site. Class time is generally occupied with lesson and instructor who is on the other
hand in control.
Online learning has provided unparalleled convenience and flexibility to learners of all ages. Students
can access course materials, lectures, and assignments at any time and from anywhere, eliminating the
constraints of physical presence in respective of their geographical location . This flexibility caters to a
diverse range of learners, including working professionals, parents, or individuals with physical
disabilities. Furthermore, online learning enables students to pace their studies according to their
individual needs, allowing them to learn at their own speed. The ability to study asynchronously allows
students to balance their educational pursuits with other commitments, leading to improved learning
outcomes.
In addition, students who are shy, introverted or lack confidence can freely and fully participate during
online classes since the 'fear factors' that inhibit them in a traditional classroom falls away in online
learning. Online learning also offers a feeling of anonymity, which is frequently noted as a benefit of
totally online courses. Unless you want to let them, no one in an online class has any idea of how you
appear or sound.
One of the significant advantages of online learning is the access it provides to a vast range of resources.
Learners can access digital libraries, e-books, scholarly articles, and interactive multimedia content,
enabling them to explore a wide variety of perspectives and delve deeper into their areas of interest.
Online platforms also facilitate collaborative learning through discussion forums, video conferencing,
and virtual study groups, fostering peer-to-peer interactions and enhancing the overall learning
experience. Additionally, the integration of educational technologies, such as simulations and virtual
reality, can create immersive learning environments, promoting active engagement and critical thinking.
Harrison (2018) claims that young children may access images and videos, use "Youtube," communicate
with and take part in age-appropriate games, and use digital applications. It is easier because
Generations Y and Z have the most expertise with ICT facilities. for these teams to make use of online
education. Fauziana (2020) claims that pupils can review their lessons by watching the teacher's
recordings again, and gather knowledge from books or using the internet to expand their knowledge.
Online learning platforms often employ adaptive learning technologies that personalize the educational
experience for each learner. Through the use of algorithms and data analytics, these platforms can
assess students' strengths, weaknesses, and learning preferences, thereby tailoring the content and
delivery to meet their individual needs. Adaptive learning promotes self-directed learning, allowing
students to focus on areas where they require more support while advancing through topics they have
already mastered. This individualized approach enhances learning outcomes, as students receive
targeted instruction and continuous feedback, fostering a deeper understanding of the subject matter.
When learning online contrary to common belief, teachers/ learners communication is often enhanced
through tools that are part of the course management. Just as communication can be built in a
traditional learning, it can as well be achieved in online learning through social media platforms as
messages can be exchanged during a lecture utilizing the meeting software's chat column, "Whatsapp,"
"Telegram," video calls, or phone calls, educators and students can also undertake bilateral
conversation.
Students who participate in interactive online learning can learn new things through browsing websites
and digital libraries. Distance learning enables the global distribution of information and knowledge
when new technologies are brought to the field of education (Hasifah, 2020). She claims that Online
education is significant because it promotes more efficient self-learning. Students have the choice of the
amount of time they invest, the material they study, and the course of their learning. Additionally,
students have the chance to go over complex subjects again until they are certain of their
comprehension. Furthermore, Students can study in a "safe" setting without feeling embarrassed using
online learning.
With the development of numerous ICT devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, and
computers, familiar interface displays and internet bundles are now reasonably priced. A
student merely needs to select their chosen package based on their budget to enroll in online
learning today. 2020 (Fauziana). Government agencies and telecom businesses should just take
the initiative to guarantee internet connectivity nationwide, thereby ensuring high-quality
educational opportunities for all time.
While online learning offers numerous benefits, it is essential to acknowledge its limitations and
challenges. For online training, respondents must have the right tools: smartphones, computer device
and internet access. This is the first problem that needs to be solved to make online learning possible.
Another significant concern is the lack of face-to-face interaction between students and instructors.
Traditional teaching methods provide direct social interaction, which fosters collaborative learning,
immediate clarification of doubts, and non-verbal communication cues. Furthermore, technical issues,
such as poor internet connectivity or platform reliability, can impede the learning experience. Online
learning may also require higher levels of self-discipline and motivation, as students must manage their
time effectively and avoid distractions. Finally, certain subjects or skills may be more challenging to
teach effectively online, particularly those that require hands-on practice or physical presence, such as
laboratory experiments or performing arts.
