English 100
Word Count: 1,100 words or about.

Please use at least one outside source. You can use more sources if you
wish. Please use at least two quotations. You can use more if you wish.
No paraphrases. You must also create a separate Works Cited page.

You must use strict MLA format with a correct works cited page. There
is information on using MLA correctly in the Resources folder in
Laulima. There’s plenty of information about MLA online. More
importantly, I’m happy to help you as well.

Choose any two similar subjects for a comparison/contrast essay. For

example, who do you feel is the better basketball player and why:
LeBron James or Kevin Durant? OR, who’s the better superhero? Better
musician?

You can choose almost any two subjects, as long as they’re similar
enough to be compared and that you state in your thesis and the body of
your paper, which one you prefer and why. I also recommend listing the
points of comparison in your thesis.

At the end of your essay, list whether you chose a point-by-point or

subject-by-subject strategy. As always, list the number of the strategies
you chose for your introduction, conclusion and title from the handout.

Now, I prefer that you come up with a topic on your own. However, if
you can’t generate your own topic, I’ve provided you with some sample
topics below:

1. Write an essay comparing and contrasting two important stages

of your life: Childhood and adolescence, adolescence and
adulthood. Compare/Contrast using details, examples and a brief
anecdote. Remember to say which one you prefer and explain
why.

2. Some people say that the best preparation for life is learning to
work with others and be cooperative. Others take the opposite
view and say that being competitive is the best preparation.
2

Compare/Contrast these positions, using concrete examples of

both. Tell which one you favor and why.

3. Compare/Contrast two teachers (for instance, their teaching

styles, apparent educational philosophy, attitude toward their
subject, attitude toward their students). Use concrete examples.
Which teacher did/do you prefer and why? (Do not use these
teachers’ real names, even if they don’t work at HCC.)

4. You are going to buy a new car. Your friends think these two cars
are the best choice: Ford Explorer and Jeep Cherokee (You can use
any two comparable cars). Compare and contrast these two cars
using specific points of comparison such as price, size,
performance and mileage. Remember to say which one you
prefer and explain why.

5. Compare and contrast two colleges--for example KCC, LCC, WCC,

HonCC. Recommend why one student should attend one over
the other.

Please Remember: even when you use a block quotation, introduce

or integrate the quotation. Do not use a dropped quotation.

DON’T DO THIS:
Here is an example of a dropped quotation:
Did you know that some bread batters should be hand mixed? “This
light mixing technique produces quick breads with a lovely open crumb”
(Greenspan 2).

DO THIS:
Here is the same example with a signal phrase:
Did you know that some bread batters should be hand mixed?
According to Dorrie Greenspan, author of Baking: From My Home to
Yours, “[t]his light mixing technique produces quick breads with a lovely
open crumb” (2).
