Observation Reflection

Through observing Ipek's teaching style, the document summarizes that she used principles of the Comprehension approach to teach present simple tense to her students. Specifically, she used the silent period to maximize comprehensible input, sought to reduce student anxiety, and used only the target language. The document notes that Ipek also employed inductive reasoning by modeling, having students infer, and then elaborating on grammar rules, putting problem-solving responsibility on students.

Ipek Observation

Through my observation for Ms. Ipek teaching style, I suggest she used the Comprehension
approach to introduce the present simple tense to her students. She used a variety of
comprehension approach’s principles such as, “the silent period”, “the effective filter” and “using
only the target language in the classroom”.
According to the Comprehension approach, the teacher used the “silent period” so the students
are exposed to as much comprehensible input as possible. As they are forming connections in
their minds about grammar rules and vocabulary of the target language. The matter that will help
the students begin speaking to communicate in the language.
As well as the silent period, the teacher seeks to lower her students’ effective filter to reduce their
stress and anxiety. The matter that helps to increase their ability to focus on language acquisition.
She also used the target language to expose her students to more comprehensible input and
provide more opportunities for them to practice in the target language.
I’m fond of her usage for “the inductive reasoning” technique to present her lesson plan. She
followed the steps “Model, Infer, Elaborate”. The technique that allows the students to struggle
with language and come up with rules on their own. The matter that gives students a sense of
solving problems together. How much is it fascinating to put the burden of responsibility on
learners’ shoulders and watch them rise with rules they would never forget easily.
