Introduction to Course Book

Week 1
Shareef M. Shareef (PhD)
[email protected]

Dr S. Shareef 2021-2022
Aims:
 This course aims to equip students with the essentials of computer
networking theory and practice and offers an opportunity for students to
achieve practical skills using industry.

Objectives:
 Understand How Computer or Communication Networks Work and How
the Internet is connected
 Be aware of the applications of data communication networks
 Be familiar with the major components and types of networks
 Understand the role of network layers
 Be familiar with the role of network standards

Dr Shareef 2021-2022
 Lectures:
 The lectures are designed to be of an interactive nature.
Students are expected to read in advanced the relevant
sections and chapters from the essential text(s).
 A compilation of lecture slides is provided in the class and
will form the core of the course.
 However, additional materials may offered during the
presentation of the course.
 Practicals:
 Hands-on practical session will play a vital role in the study
of this course. The practical sessions are designed to support
the lecture materials. Most of these will be completed in
healthy practice sessions that provides the students a whole
idea of how to configure and monitor network switches and
routers. These practices will further complement lectures.

Definition
Network:
A network can be defined as two or more computers connected
together in such a way that they can share resources.

The purpose of a network is to share resources.

A resource may be:

 A file
 A folder
 A printer
 A disk drive
 Or just about anything else that exists on a
computer.

Dr Shareef 2021-2022
 Computer networking is very popular. There are many
different types of networks that can be connected
together in a variety of ways.

 These network connections can enable computer users to

communicate over any distance, large or small.

 If you're connected to the Internet, you're already taking

advantage of the benefits of computer networking
