Concept Check #1 Name: ____zhan sun_____________

(Chapter 1 & 2)

Show all work in order to get full credit. That includes: the equation used, numbers plugged in, answer
and unit

1. Convert 1.87 mL to kL (1 point)

1.87 mL = 0.00000187 kL

2. What is the volume in cm3 of a swimming pool that is 10.5 ft by 250 in by 122 cm deep. Put the
answer in proper sig figs. (1 point)

Length = 10.5 ft * 30.48 cm/ft = 320.04 cm

Width = 250 in * 2.54 cm/in = 635 cm
Depth = 122 cm

Volume = 320.04 cm * 635 cm * 122 cm = 24,755,616 cm³

3. Water is sold in pint bottles. What is the mass of 2.5 bottles of water? (1 point)

Mass of 2.5 bottles = 473 g/bottle * 2.5= 1,182.5 g

4. How many significant figures are in the following numbers: (1 point)

a. 4.69 - ____4,6,9______
b. 0.000380 - _____3,8,0___
c. 1650 - ___1,6,5,0_______

5. Do the following calculation putting your answer in proper significant figures: (1 point)

(215.2 + 9.11) / 13.550 = ___16.55_____________

6. Prove by dimensional analysis that the following equation is valid or not. (see if units match up
on both sides) (1 point)

v 2f =v 2i +2 ax
7. Heather walks with an average velocity of 0.98 m/s eastward. It takes her 34 min to walk to the
store, what is her displacement? (2 points)

t = 34 min * 60 s/min = 2040 s

d = 0.98 m/s * 2040 s = 1999.2 m

8. With an average acceleration of -1.2 m/s2, how long will it take a cyclist to bring a bicycle with
an initial speed of 6.5 m/s to a complete stop? (2 points)

Final Velocity = Initial Velocity + (Acceleration * Time)

0 m/s = 6.5 m/s + (-1.2 m/s² * t)
t=5.42s

9. A car accelerates uniformly in a straight line from rest at the rate of 2.3 m/s 2. What is the speed
of the car after it has traveled 55 m? (2 points)

Final Velocity^2 = Initial Velocity^2 + 2 * Acceleration * Distance

v^2 = 0^2 + 2 * 2.3 m/s² * 55 m
v ≈ 15.91 m/s

10. How long does it take for the car in problem #9 to travel 55 m? (2 points)

Distance = Initial Velocity * Time + (1/2) * Acceleration * Time^2

55 m = 0 * t + (1/2) * 2.3 m/s² * t^2
t ≈ 6.92 s

11. An automobile with an initial velocity of 4.30 m/s to the right accelerates uniformly at the rate
of 3.00 m/s2. Find the final velocity and the displacement after 5.00 s. (2 points)

Final Velocity = Initial Velocity + (Acceleration * Time)

Displacement = Initial Velocity * Time + (1/2) * Acceleration * Time^2

1. Final Velocity = 4.30 m/s + (3.00 m/s² * 5.00 s)=19.30 m/s

2. Displacement = 4.30 m/s * 5.00 s + (1/2) * 3.00 m/s² * (5.00 s)^2=59.00 m

12. A tennis ball is thrown vertically upward with an initial velocity of +8.00 m/s. What will the ball’s
height be when it reaches the top? How long will it take the ball to reach its starting point? (2
points)

1. Final Velocity^2 = Initial Velocity^2 + 2 * Acceleration * Displacement

0^2 = (8.00 m/s)^2 + 2 * (-9.8 m/s²) * Displacement ≈ 3.27 m

2. Final Velocity = Initial Velocity + (Acceleration * Time)

0 m/s = 8.00 m/s + (-9.8 m/s²) * Time ≈ 0.82 s

13. Kevin throws a ball up vertically upward with an initial speed of 7.5 m/s from a third story
window. If the window is 15.0 m above the ground, find the time the stone is in flight and the
final velocity before it hits the ground. (2 points)
1.Displacement = Initial Velocity * Time + (1/2) * Acceleration * Time^2

-15.0 m = 7.5 m/s * Time + (1/2) * (-9.8 m/s²) * Time^2

Time ≈ 1.78 s

2.Final Velocity = Initial Velocity + (Acceleration * Time)

Final Velocity ≈ -10.0 m/s
